From the time I started to when I went on maternity leave, my time at Russel Metals was good. Everyone got along, found myself to be busy and learning something new everyday. 
Once my maternity leave ended, and I returned.. my experience took a complete turn to the worst. My position and what I was doing disappeared without me knowing previously. I was then pushed into a monotonous position within administration where I found myself completely bored, sometimes doing no work all day. 

In regards to management - I found myself having a difficult time trying to find an accommodation when I came back in order to pick up my son from daycare and be able to continue working for the company.
I was told by management to “tell someone who cares”  while wanting me to choose work over my own family. 
I was told as well that I had no respect for other people after parking in a spot that was not designated for my manager. And, lastly he called me strong willed, as I said that I proudly take after my uncle and grandfather (who both passed.. and who also both worked with my manager). My manager proceeded to respond with “your uncle and grandfather were two very different people. Your uncle was the salt of the earth who had everyone’s respect while your grandfather had no ones respect nor anyone liked.” This is what broke the camels back and what forced me to look for new work.

I have been an employee with Russel Metals for 20 years currently working in the Puslinch facility.  Over the years I have moved up several job positions in the company but currently I'm an Operations Assistant. Russel Metals Inc. has programs for people who want to better their education to move up to other positions.  There is a lot of room for advancement for anyone who is interested and willing.  The company has a pension plan, great benefits, great vacation structure and bonuses.  Most employees in my branch are long standing employees who have been with Russel for 10 to 30 years of service.  The managers here are always looking at ways improve and maintain the safety at this facility.  I was working from home remotely during this pandemic and I honestly enjoy coming to work instead of being at home for the interaction and involvement with the people here and the hands on part of my job.  One day in the future I will retire from this company and I will look back with no regrets.   

 Unfortunately, my experience with this manager has been extremely disappointing. Rather than focusing on the success of the business and the wellbeing of staff, decisions are too often driven by ego and personal pride. Constructive feedback is dismissed, collaboration is discouraged, and good ideas are overlooked unless they serve to boost the manager’s image.

This approach creates a negative work environment where employees feel undervalued and unheard. Simple problems are made worse because solutions are rejected if they don’t come from the manager directly. Instead of leading with professionalism and humility, the manager’s need to always be “right” undermines both morale and efficiency.

A good leader lifts their team and creates conditions for success. In this case, the manager’s ego consistently gets in the way, resulting in poor communication, high turnover, and lost opportunities for growth.


I started off in an entry level position which was Bar Pulling. I was in charge of making sure that orders were getting done as per priority. I did that for 3 years then worked my way up to a Machine Helper. I worked on a Brake Press and a Shear. I also would fill in for the material handler in that Bay when needed. I was then upgraded once more to a Cut-To-Length Helper. We would run 48''-72'' wide coils of steel through the machine. Then it would be stretched leveled and cut to the customers specifications. Management there was touch and go. Sometimes things would run smoothly and other times the complete opposite. Most of the guys I worked with were decent, but of course like anywhere, you're going to have people who are just miserable. The hardest Past of the job was how busy we would get sometimes. Just keeping up with the orders was difficult the odd time. The most enjoyable part of the job was having a purpose. Getting up everyday and going to work and making money.

Russel Metals is a supportive company with great benefits and lots of opportunity for growth when skills are displayed.  It is a fast paced environment with lots of diverse coworkers who are fun to work with.  I enjoyed providing quotes for processed steel in various sectors and learned to read AutoCAD drawings and customer sketches.  I also enjoyed the contact I had with my customers and working to ensure they had the products they needed as quickly as possible.

Very supportive management was crucial to my professional growth.

I created many business relationships at Russel, many of whom I am still in contact with for many reasons.  The hardest part of the job was keeping up with the pace while still maintaining quality and attention to detail.  When the steel market is busy, customers need it yesterday!

Don't walk, RUN away from here. There is no flexibility or compassion towards empolyees, very much a "shut up and do your job" style managment. If you are treated unfairly, too bad, live with it. There's is absolutely zero room for advancement of any kind. Very flat employment structure. Very much a boys club, almost no diversity or women in senior positions. There are MANY people who are well past retirement age and are still there leaving no room for new or young talent. If you are a person who wants to work where you are being paid substantially lower than market value, staying in the spot as where you started and being reminded that you are just an employee and are replaceable then this place is for you. All of managment needs a complete overhaul and younger people need to be brought in. This company is still stuck the in stone age when it comes to technology, policies, functions because its run by older generation who have no idea how the world has changed. Stay away. 

I was hired at Russel Metals in 2020 during the pandemic, just over a year later I have nothing but good things to say.  Russel Metals is a large network of truly amazing humans.  What a breath of fresh air after 18 years in Electrical wholesale.  My skills were very transferable making for an easy transition…but the biggest differences I see are in the management level.  Here life/work balance is taken seriously, employees are encouraged to think about their impact on the company, their health, finances, and overall how to live a better life and make better decisions.  This is a very positive atmosphere, even during challenging days where the workload can be large, but manageable with the assets of a strong team.

A solid, stable company in all economies.  Can be difficult when the market gets tough, but the same for any business.  Decently diverse work force with more women moving into leadership roles in a traditionally heavy male market.
Compensation is related to the job you do and when the company does well, you can do really well! You do get out what you put in, so your if your effort is good, you will be rewarded. Pension plan with matching contributions, stock program with matching contributions and good health benefits.  The company will re-imburse you for education related to the business and help you prepare for future roles within the company. My family feels well taken care of with my career in Russel Metals.

-Relatively no changes day to day; culture of anti-change entrenched in most employees
-Upper management does not provide honest, two way communication about economic environment to employees
-Strong nepotism and 'Old Boys Club' among senior staff; mid and lower level staff used as scapegoats for poor results. No accountability for executives.
-Good work life balance, however nowhere to move up within organization (extremely flat)
-During compensation meetings; comp for non-senior exec staff often far below market, which is said to be made up for by large bonuses. However bonuses never meet forecasts or expectations.
