Subway

Management is horrible and won't care about you, even if you tell them you spend hours after work without getting paid. They will fight you and tell you that you are not working hard enough because you clock out late. Customers seem to enjoy making our lives miserable by coming all at once, near closing time or demanding everything on their sub (there really should be a limit to how much veggies we should put!) Other customers are quite pleasant to deal with and actually respond with a "I am good, how are you?" after you ask them how they have been instead of going straight to "I want 4 footings!" Breads were sometimes a day old and it pained me that I had to serve that to people, especially if they didn't get it toasted. Be prepared to hear that the store is not busy when, in fact, it was an absolute misery for hours. Owners are extremely cheap and argue with customers, which is so embarrassing to be witnessing and be associated with. They love to complain and victimize themselves about coupons and promotions when they instead should get in their narrow-minded heads that those are the only reasons people walked into their building in the first place. Cheap out lots from customers and shamed us in front of them if we put a bit more than they want us to (which is usually the correct size the company sets). 

Inspectors are somewhat fine; however, since it is owned by a person and not the company, owners loved to break a lot of rules (temperature sheets, water in soup-gross!) Reports are simply a slap on the wrist and nothing major, regardless what the owners said. Owner lecture workers about cleaning procedures when in fact they are the ones responsible for most of the problems listed in the reports and the workers are the only thing keeping them from absolutely failing in the reports. No, and I mean NO, room for improvement here, regardless if you clearly show your dedication to the job. Keep dreaming of the day in which you get promoted at this place. You're better off just working at McDonald's since everyone seems to become managers there. The pay isn't even the discouraging part of the job; it was and will always be management. You'll prolly get a free six inch sub and free drinks from the fountain machine during your shift. Everyone obviously puts more in their subs and steals cookies :P catch me now, mf!

But seriously, for all of Subway's faults (and there is tons), it can not go without saying that I have made some of the greatest friends and formed really, really, really great relationships from this absolute nightmare place. I got along with most of my co-workers with the exception of a few. In fact, I might have gotten a bit too close (not romantically, lol) with a handful and my owner wasn't exactly the happiest about that because he'd rather us be slaves to him only (seriously he told us we should only be co-workers and nothing else outside). 

Overall, the job is fine. Great co-workers and honestly the reason why any of us still worked. Management should sell off the place to someone better and travel far far away from Canada. Decent for students who want to make a few extra bucks without having the burden of a full-time job. But please @God, help me escape soon.

Ok, now that this rant is over, [insert the you know what finger emoji here because Indeed won't let me swear] SUBWAY!

Having worked at three different subways I'd like to say this: A typical day at work honestly starts with prep: the store, the food, yourself, and your team.

Subway tends to get extremely busy rushes. You could get anywhere from 20-50 customers in a slower rush and anywhere from 60-90 in a solid rush. How well this rush goes is honestly wholly dependant on your ability to work on the team and your ability to adapt quickly to the various roles required of you both leading up to and during the rush itself. 

Don't think when the rush is over that it's really over, thats a mistake rookies tend to make and will come back too bite you. The moment you're off the line, top up EVERYTHING IMMEDIATELY. This gives you and your team a firm grasp on what there is and isn't letting you divide the work and prioritizing what needs to get done in what order. 

Bread is typically the #1 priority, no bread no subs. SIMPLE. Often teams will have one person designated to the task of bread making, this also means that they are often the last one to be put on line and the first one switched out during the busiest times. 

A manager my not always be there, however Subway had team leaders/Shift leaders. Over seeing the store isn't necessarily tied to one job title. 

A GOOD TEAM MAKES THIS JOB AWESOME. Cooperation is the name of the game. When you join subway its always a bit of an adjustment, not knowing what to do or even how to do it can be a problem. Often your training will come from your shift leader but don't be afraid to ask your team for help as they want you to succeed. Tips and tricks come with time but being able to talk and work with your co workers is essential. Knowing who works well together and who balances each other's weaknesses is always a good thing, not everyone is the best at everything and watching how others work around you is another great way to build a team mindset.

The hardest part of the job I'd say would be finding your own niche, as it takes a bit longer to gain the skills to see where one is both weak and strong. Recognizing where personal shortcomings are takes a strong team player, living up to your strengths and recognizing where others may have trouble also makes for a strong team player. HOWEVER accepting where both you and they aren't the strongest and using your strengths to reinforce the team makes for a TRUE TEAM PLAYER & PLAY MAKER.

The best parts of the job for me where seeing everyone happy with their meal and being able to have fun with the team as you work. It makes the days so much easier and BRIGHTER. It made me love coming to work and I still even now am close friends with my team. Maybe I'll go back to visit again soon.

I moved around between 3 stores. Of the 3, 1 store was a fun and professional environment, one had some problems and the remaining one was just awful to work at.

Due to management concerns with the one store, I would advise some caution with working for Subway. One store had a severe problem with nepotism, where one employee would be granted time off for nearly any reason while others would have trouble with calling in sick for legitimate reasons. A member of management at this store placed pickle juice into my own drink, which I drank from during a dinner rush. This store's employees also told customers, including my own neighbor, out right lies about my job performance which is illegal. A member of their staff was also often combative and aggressive with fellow employees, at times launching themselves into yelling matches with other employees about topics not related to the work at hand, including one employee's choice to be vegan. This employee would also often make threats of violence towards other members of staff, mostly in a joking manner. 

At the location where I had a more positive experience, employees and management were professional and fun to work with. Unlike the previous store, this store gave me the actual training I was to receive from the previous store. This store also worked with my special needs and had no problem accommodating my needs as a person with high functioning autism, providing me with a clear list of duties to complete each evening as a closer. Some of my best work experiences come from this store, where as the previous store made me feel unwelcome and disliked.

The remaining store had it's problems but they still treated me with respect and dignity. While they had trouble with teaching me the skills I needed to become a closer, working with them was still an acceptable experience.

The owner of these three stores treated me with respect and helped me feel valued while under their employ. They always took my needs into consideration, including offering to drive me home from late shifts personally when city transit was not available. They were also understanding of my career goals, allowing me to take less shifts so I could attend college.

Depending on the employees and management, Subway can either be a great place to work at or one of the worst. I hope for any potential employee who reads this, take special care to see how employees interact with one another to see if you'll be a good fit or not.

working at subway was great for the first 4 months, i enjoyed the people my manger was great. i would truly say that i had no problems with the people or the place. how ever after working here for about 4 months we had a change owners and management. after that working there became a very unpleasant place to work. all employees that were not related to the owners or friends of the owners were treated poorly.

 i started having to work until crazy hours of the night as their family and friend we decide randomly to just go home, leaving just a single person to work the rush hours of the store.  several times i was scheduled to work a 4-11 closing shift and i was still there at one to two in the morning, as i was left with a whole days worth of things to do and wasn't allowed to leave until it was done. shifts and hours were often given to the favored employees leaving very limited shifts and entirely weird hours for everyone else. there were many times that i was having to ask the owners to check my pay stub as i noticed i had never been paid for all the hours i was putting in, i was told that our personal contract didnt allow for the hours to be paid for after the store was closed. 

when working a normal shift here the owners family and friends would sit in the dinning room watching videos like tiktok or just talking on the phone for hours, just ignoring employees and  customers who needed help. there were many times when help was asked for during rush hours and is was flat out ignored, or when it wasn't the response "wait" would be used until help was no longer needed. things like cleaning and "first in first out" were generally not done. expiry dates on food would be ignored and swapped for different dates. soups and sauces would stay in the same containers continually for weeks even after it had passed the expiration date. myself and other employees would put in complaints about food and their dates to the owners and public health.

for these reasons i would say if your looking for a job here as a teenager or even adult look somewhere entirely different. 

A typical day began by being at the work-place, dressed, and ready to work 10-15 minutes before you shift began. Once I set out to work, there was a list of food preparation that needed to be completed (or at least mostly completed) before the lunch-hour (11 am). Once lunch hour began, we cleaned up food and put it back in the fridge to avoid the food becoming spoiled. During the lunch rush (11 am - 2 pm), myself and 1-2 other co-workers were "on line" (preparing subs for customers). On a busy day, we could make anywhere from 70-120 subs/hour - these numbers reflect summer sales, as I worked in a tourist community with high levels of customers during June-August. Between each "rush", we were required to essentially strip down the area we made subs, and clean top to bottom. If time permitted, we were required to clean, thoroughly, the entire restaurant portion of the storefront. Before the end of a shift, I was required to count inventory (bread, deli plates, cash, etc.) and create a report on these numbers. Numbers were double-checked to make sure they matched the computer's sales. After the numbers were checked, and matched, I was able to end my shift.

I learned a lot about quality of a product. As well, we were required to read information on promotional items, so I learned how to upsell items appropriately without "pushing" customers.

Management was fair. I often found that despite repeatedly explaining certain schedule conflicts (because of school, or extenuating circumstances), I was ignored and scheduled despite the conflicts. However, she was easy to approach, and treated people with the same level of respect (no favouritism).

The hardest part of my job was working on days when we had a heavy volume of customers, and not enough employees scheduled to work. We would often have a rush of customers, and all of the available employees "on-line", and feel stressed and pressured to complete tasks too quickly to ensure a quality product/service.

The most enjoyable part of the job was hearing positive feedback from customers about how efficiently we performed our jobs, and how clean the restaurant was after we had carefully cleaned it to the best of our abilities.

opening: Getting everything setup, baking bread for use throughout the day, counting the til, helping customers, preparation of meat & vegetables

lunch rush: working as a team ie: one person would take & start orders, one person would do vegetables, sauces, complete order with a meal if needed & accept payment. Take care of Any prep & baking needed

Closing: Being able to handle a dinner rush alone. Preparation of anything that would be needed immediately in the morning ie: filling sauces, taking out frozen products. Putting everything away. Counting inventory. Taking out the garbage, cleaning the washroom, Cleaning the store, Doing the dishes, Closing down the computer. counting the till. setting the alarm.

There are a long list of duties to preform. All which i did, just by taking a quick look & deciding off the top of my head which was most important.
I learned a great deal during my time at subway. Like working fast, to keep the customers happy. My customers loved my up beat alive happy to the core attitude, they loved how pretty i made my subs, they loved how unbelievably fast i was, they loved how friendly i was.
My management was great. I appreciated that my manager had set schedules, he gave us great hours. I was available anytime & he discussed the hours he had available & asked which hours would work best for me.
A lot of my co-workers were amazing. We were a team when we needed to be. Depending on the shift, there was no team. Just one person working. Lunch time is usually the only time there is more then one person working. We had to depend on each other. For sufficient prep to be done.
Hardest part: When you run out of things you need. You start your shift & there hasn't been enough prep... for anything. Which sets a person up for chaos. Only a few people are able to preform hours of prep in a very short limited amount of time. Lucky for me i can, no problem.
I loved my time at Subway. I loved the people. I loved making subs. It really is an art. There are some people who cram everything they can into a sub. A person able to close it & have it still look pretty is indeed a sandwich artist. Without a doubt.

Working at a job, of course, does require one to complete the necessary tasks related to one's job, but personally taking responsibility for one's work and have a positive attitude towards the team members not only increases the pleasantness in working environment it also creates a friendly environment guests and customers. One of my memory in working at a fast food restaurant (Subway) is that of my colleague's attitude towards late arrival customers. One evening when we were supposed to close the store at 6:00 P.M, but a customer arrived at 5.45 p.m, I saw the customer (an elderly lady) approaching towards the store and I also noticed that my colleague saw the customer approaching towards us. I was safe-dropping the cash so my colleague had no choice but to serve her. Story short, my colleague did not welcome her properly, in fact my colleague told the customer we were out of bread (which we clearly were not) so the customer ordered a salad instead. As my colleague was making the customer's salad I paid attention that my colleague lacked a positive attitude, instead she was rude to the customer. Finally, the customer reached me (the cashier) but just before that she asked my colleague that she wanted some cookies also to which my colleague said we don't have any cookies (we had cookies. We had everything that a customer wanted). My colleague was not only senior in age to me she was senior in experience also which left me no choice but remaining patient till the customer would have arrived to me to make her payment. When the customer reached me, I looked her in the eye and I told her that I was sorry for the cold welcome she received one of us. I found her the cookies she wanted and I also gave her some discount. I am not sure if I had made the customer happy by telling her that I was sorry and that she deserved a warm welcome, but she had filed a compliant against my colleague the very same evening when she had left the store. The next day my boss asked me about the truth of this event and I objectively described what I had witnessed.

Every day was pretty much the same thing. When an employee comes in, he or she has to make sure everything is filled up and clean and check what needs to be done in terms of food preparation and cleaning. After the employee has made sure that they had enough food, they would start cleaning the store in between serving the customers.
With these types of jobs, one learns to deal with the public effectively and with a pleasant attitude. For example, you cannot serve the customer with a bad attitude, even if something is troubling you. The customer has nothing to do with your personal life, and he deserves to be treated as a customer, and not an emotional punching bag, so to speak. 
The family spirit is usually quite present with these types of environments. Constantly working as a team makes one value the help of his peers. Since Subway is a sandwich shop, the customers, like with any other store that is in the food industry, can be easily irritated and/or difficult at times. Of course, it doesn't happen often but sometimes it can get irritating to get treated poorly just because that customer has a lot on his mind. It's nothing an employee can't deal with, but it is always nice to serve people that have big smiles and appreciate your work. With that being said, I would say helping people that have a good attitude and are grateful for your work is the best part of this job. I enjoy helping people and have no problem dealing with picky customers. When those customers warn you before that they are going to be difficult and express their appreciation after you've helped them, that gives me a sens a gratification. I enjoy helping people and I had the opportunity to do so everyday with this job.

a typical day of work was getting prepared for busy lunch rushes, and working well together as a team and making sure the job gets done. 

The management was amazing, I had an amazing Manager, General Manager, and great owners. They were always there to help make your shift a lot better and always providing things you can work on and what you do amazing on. They were the best managers I could ever have.

I learned so much customer service experience with Subway, it's taught me how to respond to customers in a calm or a moment where you want to get mad but hold it together. It taught me the basic needs of interaction and how to interact with people

My co workers are AMAZING. There was never a time I never wanted to work with any of my co workers. Of course we had fun with our job, but we also got the job done and had fun getting the work done and making our managers even more happy with us.

The hardest part about my job sometimes was how busy it got, running out of certain products or dealing with upset customers. Which I will admit was frustrating a lot but there was always a positive to a negative, or a back up plan. We always found a way to make our customers happy and making sure they left with a smile on their face. 

The best part of my job was meeting new people daily and getting to know them. They would become regulars and I would automatically know what they wanted on their subs or what kind they were getting in general. It was sooooo much fun being able to enjoy my job and get to know customers as well. Your there to do your job, and get the job done BUT it also is nice to make it a comfortable place for customers who have a reason to come because it welcomes them there and thats what we truly want to make them feel like. That we can have new regular customers come and enjoy it as much as we do

I would say everyday at work was hard work at the same time its fun because you have a chance to learn, improve your self and a chance to enter act with other people. Everyone are busy doing different task and helping each other and everyone are focus on giving the costumer what they've wanted and best experience possible. I learned how to do all the task that they ask me to do from the very basic task in the restaurant like maintaining the cleanliness following the restaurant standard, preparing all the product so that it will be ready for serving, doing the cashier, inventory, handling delivery, managing big orders, and handling decision making if needed. and other task required in a restaurant function. About the management I can say that I wish there is additional benefits for a worker with position that does more job than the other part time only or don't have much responsibility on the restaurant function except of free food and break time payed. Workplace culture i wish there is recognition board for the hard workers and not just for the mistakes that needs an improvement so that the good workers will work harder even more cause they know they are being recognized. The positive side of the company's culture that I like the most is the team work that made the difference. The hardest Job for me was my first time doing the inventory alone its so much complicated because of lack of information on my training. The last but not the least my enjoyable experience on my job was when the costumers, co-workers and even the employer recognized your hard work. That is a wonderful feeling as a worker that makes you want to prove more to others and specially to your self. And working with friends sometimes is a bonus...
