Do not work here if you want to prevent yourself from emotional/mental damage. Avoid at all costs, it is not worth it. I have never dealt with such ignorant, pretentiousness and insufferable core group of people in my entire life. This is not your typical retail toxic situation, its worst. Management lacks in communication, organization and maturity. Very toxic and shady. Its very evident the team lacks in basic education. You will suffer if you’re a youth and a part of a marginalized group. The core part of the team takes things way too personally. Lack of professionalism. Do NOT believe when they say they accept diversity. Casual microaggressions and ignorant/unnecessary comments are easily made. You’ll be mistreated and exploited. They will play with your minds and try to play victim/savior to keep their images clean. It is so bad that you cannot report to management of the issues and fears you have because of the extreme biased minds and inconsideration. This is what happens when there are employees who have no life outside work, and like to screw other employees up to be a part of their own entertainment. 

This is a good job only if you fit into the cliques’ standards, want to gain more experience and as a side job but please do not expect to be satisfied with this job (even as a part time) in the long run. Hiring process from the start already raises some red flags. I would want to recommend this to high schoolers who just need some experience and a little cash made on the side. 

This is supposed to be a chill job. Gaining experience, earning extra income and a good working bond with the crew, but as I said its very cliquey. 

I’m sure the team there would not be able to take these words into consideration because they lack comprehension and will create their own fantasy version of it. 

Don’t claim you’re into music and movies if you have poor views of music/movies. Unaccepting and unethical lovers of the arts. Poor music "lovers" who have nothing else to carry them as individuals. 

Just like another reviewer - everyone makes minimum wage. Nothing is recognized. They tell you to respond to their e-mails ASAP, but when you have a legit question, they ignore you. When you follow up, you get "YOU ALREADY ASKED THAT". Yeah, guess I didn't get a reply the first five times I asked.

Higher ups can't handle any form of feedback. It's okay for them to yell and scream at you, though.

Super unorganized. No one has any idea what they are doing. Ask one person, get directed to another. That person then yells at you and asks you if you're an idiot, and directs you back to the other person.

Given skeleton shifts so you can't even take a break because no one is there to cover.

They expect you to do everything that isn't in your job description, and yell at you if you don't.

No benefits package, no incentives to push the store outside of not getting screamed at. They tell you to promote (which they expect you to do on your own time, on your own dollar, and for no pay), on top of never offering positive feedback.

I refuse to be screamed at by adults who act like teenagers, for not doing things that are against the law (unpaid work/not taking my break) for the low amount they offered me. These guys need to pull their socks up. I would never recommend working here. I won't, ever again.

I was with them for almost 4 years. First two years were amazing, great team and management! Customers were actually happy to walk in to the store and we even had regulars and made a boom in our sales. Shortly after management had changed, things went very south. The manager they hired rarely works, leaving the sales reps to fend for the stores themselves even if the store is busy and there are tasks where a manager is supposed to be present but instead the assistant manager works more hours than the regular manager. Head office does not listen to concerns and disregards them. Instead they place the blame on the staff and make you feel bad. The new manager that came in also did not have any product knowledge whatsoever and that made customers have a negative response to the store and again, the management does not care they will still take it out on the staff. Few perks include a great discount! Play your own music when you’re on shift and obviously great customers! If you’re a music lover and looking for a short term retail job this is for you! Be aware of the management and head office!

I am grateful for the time I spent with this company and at times it was a very fun place to work. However, overall my experience was negative. I stuck with the company because I was excited for career advancement selling product that I loved. Unfortunately there is not as much of a market for product like this in this day and age and due to the lack of sales there seemed to be a lot of tension and finger pointing towards the end of my time there. A lot of the long term head office team members seemed to be leaving as well. I did initially have a great mentor and learned a lot from him before his departure. Overall as well I felt there was not a great work/life balance. It was necessary for managers to work 44 hours a week minimum and I found I ended up working more in the 50+ hours a week range for no overtime pay. On top of this, my salary was extremely low. The sales team did not receive raises except when minimum wage increased. Overall, despite having a close knit relationship with my team everyone was more or less dissatisfied with the company and only stayed due to love of the product.

Overall an enjoyable place to work, I was only employed for a short amount of time but really enjoyed when I did work there. Being in a such a small store is pretty good as you get to know the people you work with very well and start to recognize familiar faces. The best part of working here is the fact that you will always be learning, maybe not so much about technical things, as you learn most of that from the start, but more so about pop culture and movies and music, there is always a constant and ever changing flow of new products and it keeps it interesting. Although it is enjoyable to work there, I could no longer be employed for the lack of hours, throughout my time there I heard rumours of Sunrise inevitably going under for many reasons. The biggest issue overall is that there is not enough business to make any profit and therefore there is not enough hours so most Sunrise locations are not hiring and will not be hiring for a long time. I would love to see Sunrise thrive, but as of right now, the future looks grim.

Very toxic culture. I was part of the “upper management” team. I say that in quotes, because there is upper management and then there is the clique. Lots of very private conversations used as ploys to steal ideas as their own or back talk someone else they were literally all smiles with minutes before. Even suggesting they need to find a way to get rid of them. Very awkward and uncomfortable to be in that situation. Don’t get me wrong, the company is filled with great people that are truly passionate and dedicated to the success of sunrise. Unfortunately, these people are not the VP or his cronies. I watched the true visionaries and creatives of sunrise get used and exploited over the past year and ultimately let go while others took credit for their work.  How these people sleep. I don’t know. I would not go back until some housekeeping is taken care of.

Firstly, the wage is terrible. Everyone makes minimum wage (including assistant managers) except for the manager. 
Secondly, it's very unorganized. There's no specific way of running the store and where I worked, I wasn't even given a 4 days notice for the next weeks schedule. 
Thirdly, everyone above the store manager don't really care about you, and any efforts you put towards the store are not recognized. 
Fourthly, the person who was my manager didn't even know anything about the music/movie culture. As someone who has been in the music/movie industry, I'm confident I could have ran the place better. Any suggestion I made towards improving the store layout was constantly ignored and all my efforts were never appreciated.

This is a company that does not care about retaining loyal hardworking people, what they want are people who don't know any better who can be mistreated and paid less.

In my experience, they have offered incentives in the form of more hours for meeting weekly sales goals.  Unfortunately, these goals just happen to spike to unreasonable numbers when these incentives are on the table.  What a strange coincidence.

Having personally known three managers (two at one location, and one at another), I also know their rates and benefits offered are very inconsistent.  They will certainly try to lowball you if they can.

Having also worked for a very similar company, I know things can be much better than they are here.

I've worked at Sunrise previous to its closure, so I have experience with both old and current locations under different ownership and management. But this review is for my most current work experience as a christmas temp. 

PRO: The job itself was great and the work was enjoyable. Cool place to be if you love music. 

CON: The manager made it such a horrible place to be, that now I refuse to take one step in that store. They made you feel so unwelcome and uncomfortable, almost as if it was a daily goal alongside the sales goals. It was the absolute worst work experience I've ever had. I would definitely NOT recommend this place as employment.

I've worked at sunrise on and off for multiple years. I have worked with the company both before and after their acquisition of the old HMV stores. While your experience will be different from store to store, I have worked at two seperate stores and have had a positive experience in both instances. There was room for development and growth, as long as you show initiative and interest in developing. Started as a sales associated and finished with the offer of being an assistant manager, unfortunately I couldn't take the position as I had to move away for school.
