Swish-Maintenance

During my tenure at Swish, I encountered significant challenges that ultimately led to my departure. In my first week, I was told there would be changes to the structure of the IT department which never happened. This set the stage for persistent operational difficulties.

Over six months, I observed that critical IT issues were consistently neglected. Management constantly resisted implementing necessary measures, leaving the organization vulnerable.  Despite my efforts to escalate these concerns and secure approval for remediation, I faced resistance at every turn. Decisions frequently contradicted industry best practices and common sense. There was also an external MSP, exhibiting highly questionable practices, selling unneeded hardware with vague contracts omitting critical details. These purchases, layered onto existing unresolved issues, significantly worsened things.

There was an expectation to perform after-hours and weekend work, yet no lieu time or compensation was provided for the hundreds of hours I invested at the company’s request. When I raised this concern with HR, I was met with an unprofessional response that focused on my communication style (reading aloud a prepared statement) rather than addressing the issue. 

Two other individuals in my role had left within the prior year, making me the third to depart. This pattern suggests a need for senior executives to critically evaluate the IT department. My experience was marked by systemic inefficiencies, poor decision making, exploitative vendor practices, and a lack of support for addressing critical issues. I strongly recommend that prospective employees carefully consider these factors before joining Swish.

If you're considering a management role at Swish Maintenance, proceed with extreme caution. During my time there, I witnessed firsthand how little the company invests in its managers. Training is virtually non-existent, development plans are unclear or missing, and SMART goals are more of a checkbox exercise than a tool for growth.

Swish's reputation for firing managers without cause. I was one of several terminated despite high performance and deep commitment. Their performance review process doesn't align with the company’s stated core values on how senior leadership treats its people. It creates a culture of instability for those in leadership roles.

Swish speaks to values like support, growth, and teamwork, but the reality for many is very different,  particularly for those hired to make change.

I was required to move to a new city as a condition of my employment, within 18 months. They did not offer any financial assistance with that process, and I was 8 months of my uprooting my entire family. 

If you’re looking for a company that nurtures leadership, provides mentorship, or believes in long-term investment in its managers, this is not the place..

Swish has minimal onboarding training. 
My manager didnt even know how to do anything in the department so my training came from an employee in a completely different department. It was mostly outdated word documents that I read through and hoped I understood. I couldnt ask my manager questions as they didnt have any answers and would just brush me off or tell me to ask to someone else. 
If the manager wasnt a child of one of the executives there is no way they would even have a job here - theyre completely incompetent and have no managerial skills 

The pay is barely above minimum wage and there is no negotiating it. They will say there are yearly increases but there is always some excuse to why you arent eligible for it. On the odd chance you do get a raise, its less than $1 - pathetic for a muti million dollar company. All the executives drive expensive cars and everyone else can barely afford groceries

Instead of making real changes they will offer you a "role change" and give you a new title but your tasks and pay will stay the same 

If they want to fire you, theyll either say its organization restructuring and give no warning. Or theyll move you to a different department without consulting you first. You can either take the new department role and stay in HRs "good books". Or if you say no theyll label it as job abandonment so they dont have to pay severance and it looks like you quit

There is such a disconnect between the high ups and the rest of the company. 

Goals can be set one day then completely changed the next day. 

Looking to advance in your career? Good luck. I know employees that have worked at this company 20 years and have the exact same title with minimal increase in pay.

Workplace culture is a joke too, no value is placed on the social interaction between departments and the environment feels tense at all times. 

The most frustrating part of this company is the lack of direction. There is no direction and there are too many leaders pushing employees and the business in different directions. 

P.S

This company is over 60 years old. It runs the exact same way as day one. The software is dated and sales techniques are ancient. 

 
My advice to the company
- Directors and managers need to be on the same page when moving forward. 
- Managers need to have a working knowledge of the platforms employees are working on.
- Get with the times. Stop using software that needs to mirror an ancient operating system in order to work (Point force). Embrace the future and take advantage of new platforms.

• Workplace culture is horrible. Toxic management. Attempts to isolate employees and dismantles trust within teams as a way to control employees.
• Workload is inconsistent. Sometimes it is busy and you can’t keep up. Other times it’s slow but that is less frequent. 
• HR is only there for the employer, not employees. Once you go to them for something, you’ll be targeted. 
• Job expectations are ambiguous and changing constantly. More responsibilities keep piling on.
• There is a promise of flexibility in regard to working from home and accommodating appointments, however it can be used against you.
• Pay is insufficient for the amount of work and time that is required to complete the 
• Management does not know what they are doing. There is a lack of communication regarding processes, changes and expectations. They have no idea what the job entails.
• Many unhappy employees. Some that have been there for a long time.
• Some amazing people to work with which is the only saving grace

Family owned but has changed a lot since the brothers have stepped away. 

Work life balance is good. Pretty much 8-5  M-F job with occasional overtime. Stress is low to medium.

Lots of turnover. Losing too many quality people and long term employees. People don't quit jobs. People quit managers.

Benefits good. Salary not as good. Uneven salaries based on friends rather than technical ability or years of employment. Their highest paid technicians should be their best technicians. Not by long shot. 

Their is a toxic work environment created by senior management failing to address obvious double standards.
If you are not in their little clique club then you will face great difficulty. Expect to get blindsided, blamed, and publicly humiliated for things that are not your doing or responsibility. HR will not stand up and repair this issue so do not expect any support. 

This is causing low morale, poor work environment and high turnover.

It wasn't a bad place to get some experience, and the hours were standard. But the place lacked passion and a desire for better. I feel like upper management were comfortable and didn't care what was happening beneath them too much as long as things ran smoothly. The marketing department had some nice people, but like many departments, couldn't keep a long-lasting team. I think there's huge room for workplace culture improvement and more realistic goal-setting. The company has been around for over 50 years, and they're nowhere near closing, so if you can survive, it could be a pretty stable place to work.

There are some good things about working at Swish however it is hard to remain positive about your career due to the favoritism and unfair treatment of employees. Promotions are based on your last name or who you know, rather than your performance and merit. The same goes for bonuses and pay raises.It is very discouraging.
Some good people who could have made a difference have left due to this. 
You can gain great industry knowledge here but do not expect to advance your career.

A lot of promotions are about being in that inner circle. They try to find ways of making you too structured to their way of thinking. It was the worst work experience I ever had. Not the place to work if you want to be your own person.                                                                   I have seen a lot of good people there terminated after years of service so don’t ever think your job is secure. I have worked at 5 other companies before and was treated with a lot more respect and appreciation.

If I could give 0 stars I would have. Management is completely clueless as what the average sales cycle is. Expectations are so out of reach that they only set you up for failure. Once hired, the on boarding process is painful and out dated. I would rather take a bath with a toaster then recommend anyone to apply for a role with Swish.
