Job itself was good. Productive, and learned a lot. Immediate management (mid tier management) was very supportive, even more so if you're a productive worker. The pay was minimal; after all, they're wages are "competitive", which by default means it's going to be as low as they can afford to go. Despite that, I do think that the overall pleasant atmosphere amongst workers make up for it, as long as you're able to survive off of the wage. 
However, the rivalries between departments was very real. Sure, when it came to regular workers, most people were pretty cool with each other; I've even formed lasting friendships with people from other departments. But if you're a high performer and you help drive your department's performance up, the management of other departments will start noticing and nitpicking you for anything they can capitalize on to get you removed so that their performance isn't outshined. The better your performance, the better *your* management treats you, the worse *everyone else* sees you. One complaint, one error, one incident, whatever it may be, and they'll pounce on it. And since these people will generally be veteran employees, many from before Tina's (current CEO) time, their words hold more weight than yours, and you'll be gone without so much a warning, regardless of your stellar performance, shining work history, or prolonged time in service. If anything, especially when. And if your own management trails behind on seniority, then they can't protect you. Even HR, who's supposed to represent the company and the company only, will pull the seniority card and play favorites. If the complainer can't get their way with HR, they'll just look for someone within HR with more seniority to apply pressure, and if they reach the top of the ladder, then they just go to the executives. If that doesn't work, they'll go to the CEO's mother (former retired CEO). Eventually, they'll get their way, and you're left with no job, no reference, and your former department is left worse for wear. This can happen to anyone, as long as you have someone with more seniority or favoritism than you, no matter who you are, no matter how integral you are. There's a reason who there's a high turnover rate amongst high performing employees and even management.
*If* you do plan on joining T&T, like I said, your immediate people are good, and no matter how bad the situation is, everyone will try their best to make the most out of the situation and help each other. But, do keep this in mind; the pay is minimal, and for the love of god, keep your head down and don't give anyone anything to hold against you, no matter how small. Anything.
Work hard, but not well, and you'll survive.

A typical work day is pretty repetitive. There are two positions in grocery; aisle and promotion. They do exactly what their respective titles suggest. I worked in Promotion (night shift) and personally find it easier (also training in dairy/frozen so I can also sub in if necessary). I was responsible in receiving product pallets from shipment trucks, and moving the pallet from the backroom to the sales floor, and then distributing the boxes from the pallet to the locations they belonged to. Boxes that belonged in the aisle were then handled by of course, the aisle workers and they were responsible for 2 aisles (usually). I worked closely with the assistant department head and department head as they are the ones that decide on promotional display location and made it to the stage where they just gave me instructions to create a display of x and x product, make price signs, and I would be able to do so on my own. Some days, I see the bosses a few times throughout the day and I can carry out the daily tasks. Something to note: promo has like 1-2 people in that position so usually it is just me and another person, or, I'm just by myself. Moreover on that topic, management has it tough, my time working there was somewhat challenging, I worked through 3 major events which seen the most volume of customers, their location grand opening, Christmas, and New years. At the time I was working, the department suffered from a lack of employees. many people come and go, people call in sick and don't show up, and so the active employees end up having to do their share. It sounds pretty easy... until you have to do it. Funny enough, department head wants everyone to work, but also need to accommodate their wants in needs for schedule changes. Overall, I think this is a typical work and grind workplace, it has it's moments and most of them are meh, make some friends to prevent turning into a zombie-workhorse-slave, also Chinese is a plus, most people will come up to you if you look Asian and just proceed to ask for something assuming that you know how to speak Chinese, got a customer get mad at me b/c I didn't know that he was asking where the newspaper was.

Basically, atmosphere depends on colleagues, supervisors and the manager. The manager, some supervisors and some colleagues are both quite friendly and supportive. They would help with any difficulties confronted. The manager of the department of cashier is warm and nice. Work schedules could be flexible and discussable beforehand. Payment is higher than average of service jobs.
Most of the colleagues are easy to get along with. They are easygoing and willing to chat a lot .

However, some supervisors look not so friendly, and even one I met is very emotional. Besides, work schedule could be changed at any time just right before scheduled work hours. Though supervisors would show us work schedule a week earlier but they change it based on their own convenience. I was somewhat forced to gain my working hours by one of the supervisors even though I’ve arranged my personal schedules. The supervisor showed me an aversive expression and confronted me if I really didn’t have time to work. Finally the manager handled this and I didn’t have to work then.

Most of the customers speak Mandarin and Cantonese. Being able to speak Chinese would be an asset here. The most difficult part of this job is that cashiers need to memorize most of the codes of fruits and vegetables. Cashiers have to key in codes immediately for checkout, and meanwhile respond to customers’ needs like checking prices of an item, or packing the items for customers and so on. There’s nothing new other than those tasks though. Cashiers are required to finish each checkout ASAP or T&T would ask them to reflect on and compose an article of why they are not quick enough. Welfare and benefits would be given until 3 months of the work, so before that new staffs would not get any benefits and welfare. Still, the workload seems not low.

To sum up, the atmosphere depends on the manager, some colleagues and supervisors there. Work schedule may be changed suddenly even though it has been scheduled. Most of colleagues are friendly. Tasks would be hard at first but the clerk may be used to it soon.

Have worked here for awhile and know most of the colleagues at my store. I love this company since my colleagues treat me well but also dislike my company cos management see all of our customers r always right. Staffs are super friendly as your coworkers and teach you staff all the time. We share ups and downs. You could even make friends with different ages people there. Managerial level like department head and adh or supervisor are not mean either. They are willing to teach you and gain more at the workplace. 

Being a cashier has to face so many customers and do lots of transaction, although most of the customers are nice, there's some really rude and stupid. You will realize that is not a good postion for you if you do not know how to deal with people. Just to remember to take a deep breathe and then carry on.  They love complain all the time. 

Know Chinese is a bonus but you don't have to know, be prepared your customers will force you to speak Chinese to them cos they think they are superior than you. They love to throw their recycle bags, money and card to you. If you forgot to ask them for point card, they act like they wanna kill you and report you to your manager. Even if you ask them in English, sometime they just pretend they do not understand or actually do not understand. 

Just to be careful when you do change and also type all the PLU codes, make sure is accurate and not letting them have change to complain about you. You will know what I mean. 

I would recommend this workplace to people if you need many hours and want to learn how to speak Chinese. 

If you are a really hard working and productive person, you will be fine at the team. If you are careless one.. Be careful, you will be in trouble easily. But they do not fire people easily so I do consider job security is not bad. However, at the same time, it may not be a good workplace for high salary, is not a place for u if you want higher paid. 

Overall, I do love my colleagues and will miss them if I leave. I just do not like how customers treat the others like nobody.

A Typical Day at Work

What I Believe I Learned
Through this role, I learned strong organizational and multitasking skills. I gained experience in retail administration, internal communication, and time management. I also developed a better understanding of how large retail operations function behind the scenes, including compliance, coordination between departments, and problem-solving in a busy environment.

Management
Management is generally structured and task-oriented. Expectations are clearly communicated, and there is a strong focus on efficiency and accuracy. While the work standards are high, management provides guidance when needed and values reliability and responsibility from administrative staff.

Workplace Culture
The workplace culture is diverse and team-focused. Employees from different backgrounds work together, which creates an inclusive environment. The pace can be demanding, but teamwork and cooperation are essential to keeping daily operations running smoothly.

The Hardest Part of the Job
The hardest part of the job is handling multiple tasks under time pressure, especially during busy periods or when unexpected issues arise. Balancing urgent requests from different departments while maintaining accuracy can be challenging.

The Most Enjoyable Part of the Job
The most enjoyable part of the job is contributing to the smooth operation of the store and supporting both staff and management. Seeing tasks completed efficiently and knowing that your work helps the store run successfully is very rewarding.


I am now working in Grocery Department Metro town in Burnaby, BC. This place is really the worst place I have never worked in. "Head" of each department is so rude, like asking us not to talk at any work hours, and pretends he/she cares about their subordinates. For example, he/she would tell you not to work so fast because he/she doesn't want you to get hurt and be unable to come back to work on another day. When you slows down your pace a bit, he/she blames you not working in an appropriate speed even though you can finish your duties every time. The heads just regard subordinates as "robots". Moreover, he/she likes giving pressures to the ones he/she wants to kick out and promotes people on his/her side. Furthermore, he/she does not help you if you have too much things to do although he/she has plenty of free time to chew gums and chat with people happily around and in the office (totally no team work & no "lets have it done spirit") . Also, in order to meet the sales target each week, he/she likes order too much items and then makes the storage places too full. When there is no place to store the remaining items that cannot be put on the selves, he usually asks you to find a way to store them. There are many mouses in the storage places and the items are usually  damaged by the mouse. The so-called "management" is a disaster and unbelievably even the store manager likes protecting the "heads" on his side. The head office has not never cared about this mess.  Last but not least, besides the duties in grocery department, they ask us to clean the staff room and other places because they can't "order" the janitors that are assigned by other companies.  

Everyday at work is super fun, I usually work with another four colleagues. We clean fishes and sell them. And we also do the cleaning jobs after work.
During the work period, I developed the ability to mange time well since I have to work and study at the same time. Besides, I learned to notice the hazard immediately and solve it as soon as possible. Patience and listening skills are what I also learned from working inT&T, when serving the customers, patience is the most important thing since only with patience and listening skills, I can provide the customers with the best service.
Actually, there are nothing is really hard for me in this job, but if say, the most challenge part is how to get along with others well. And I think as long as I treat others with sincere, it is not hard to get along with others well. And I tried to be nice to everybody, and the result is really good, even the acknowledged disagreeable person treat me really nice.
The most enjoyable part of my job is I was highly praised by the owner of the Supermarket and the general manager because of my dedication and the nice attitude to the customers. Also, when I serving the customers and see their happy smiles, it makes me feel really nice too. Besides, it is really happy to get along with my colleagues and my manager. Basically speaking, everything and everyone at work makes me feel thankful and happy.

    My job responsibility mainly focus on placing cargoes when they were delivered; it's the first thing I need to do when start working. Then I need to ask around and check the storage to see if there were enough raw materials like potatoes or pork and ducks' meat, and preparing more for tomorrow. Most of my co-workers are nice people, because I was the youngest, they granted their helps to me oftentimes during the first few weeks and I feel the most grateful for that. I sometimes got asked to help the front to deal with customer because all the pork they sold was cooked by me, and I usually know better when customers had questions about it. 
    Works in a kitchen is hard because of its small working space and temperature, and the working paces: the amount of works seems endless in a busy day; however, I learned much from it. Not just cooking skills and customer service skills, I had also acquired the ability to act and think instantaneously at the same time while keeping the error rate low. My experience of working as kitchen assistance is valuable and can be transcend to other types of the work I might encounter in the future. It taught me greatly about the importance of team work and keeping performance when under stresses, and I believe they makes me a more adaptable person. 
   
    

A typical day in the seafood department is fast-paced, customer-focused, and highly team-oriented, involving fish handling, product preparation, and quality checks during peak hours. In this role, I have strengthened my communication skills, food safety awareness, and time management while learning to stay calm and professional under pressure. Management has been supportive and mentorship-driven, especially my direct supervisor, who has encouraged me to take on greater responsibility and grow professionally. The HR team has also been approachable and helpful, making onboarding and workplace communication clear and smooth. The workplace culture values collaboration and mutual respect, with team members supporting one another during busy periods. The most challenging part of the job is the physically demanding long standing hours and heavy weekend workload, while the most rewarding part is working closely with my team, helping customers, and contributing to efficient operations and positive customer experiences.

 As a cashier, you are expected to fulfil any customer demands, as long as it is within your range of duty. However, the most difficult part is when the scanners or transactions don't work as they are supposed to, as the customers are not going to be considerate with you wasting their time. If you are a Chinese descendant with fine English skills, then expect to face some racism from some customers but the best way to deal with them is to ignore their rude comments and continue to proceed their transactions. The job is tough, especially in rush hours where you are trying to finish each transaction quickly, some customers are afraid you may make a mistake on their bill, some customers lack patience, some are considerate but the person behind them may get mad at you for working so slow. It can be a nightmare and expect customers to lie with ridiculous excuses. These liars will expect you to believe them, but they really should double-check the logic in their argument. In the end, just be polite to everyone and keep yourself positive or else it will be difficult to work here. Rush hours are frequent. Most cashiers quit before three months. 
 The manager and supervisors are friendly and considerate, but some co-workers are not good at advising people.
