When I think back on my time at Tailz, I have a lot of anger and resentment for the way every employee is treated. 

The owner is emotionally abusive and does not care even an ounce about her employees. There is a side of her that will demean and insult you to your face, but will also insult you in front of other staff while you're there, while you're not there, even to customers. Nothing you ever do will be good enough. There were times she would teach me how she wanted things to be, then yell at me a few weeks later because I was doing it wrong. She gave one employee a self help book as a Christmas present, which I cannot understand how someone wouldn't see that as extremely insulting to said employee. 

The employees I worked with were absolutely amazing. The ONLY reason I stayed was because we had become such a family, bonding over the unsafe work conditions, terrible pay and emotional / mental / physical pain that was endured there. The staff would put in their own time and money to try and make sure things worked there. 

The owner has put staff members in dangerous and unsafe situations and then demeaned them when they spoke up about how they were not comfortable. For the amount of things you have to endure there the pay should be so much higher. Corners are cut whenever they can be cut and safety is definitely not her first priority. 

The disrespect has also gone to many service workers that have come in. I had personally see her yell at two workers that came to help with the internet and speak down to the man who came in to build the front desk. 

The clients and dogs that come to Tailz are amazing. The bond that you get to create with the dogs is truly such a beautiful thing. Quite a few of the clients expressed that the reason they still bring their dogs there is only because they love the staff. Multiple of the clients have had issues with the owner.

I could list off pages and pages of reasons why this in not the place to work. I hope all of our words of warning will keep you from being fooled by the fake personality ad smile you will get that fooled so many of us.

To the owner, I know you will read this and immediately dismiss it as another "spiteful" employee, but I hope one day when all of your AMAZING staff leave you, you take it as a sign to change your ways and attempt to become a compassionate and caring person.

Sadly, for me the negative outweighed the good during my time at Tailz. My coworkers were incredible and the dogs/clients were amazing too. But the owner of the business is manipulative, selfish and does not care about her staff. I considered my coworkers and I to be a little family and it broke my heart to see how she treated them and myself. We all put so much work and energy into that place and all we got back was little pay, zero encouragement and a whole bunch of emotional abuse. The owner will go on and on about loyalty and teamwork while she keeps secrets (that could cause health/safety issues) from her staff and treats staff like they're disposable. We are human beings, we deserve to be treated with mutual respect and care. There were multiple occasions where the owner of the business talked badly about their staff to other employees and even clients, which is completely inappropriate. Not to mention the times I've witnessed the owner putting me and my coworkers in unsafe situations. 

On top of everything, this business is simply not run properly. The list of health and safety hazards is never ending. You'll be asked and expected to do extra tasks during your busy day and not get paid for the extra work and effort you put in. If you are considering applying at Tailz, please reconsider as you do not deserve to be subjected to this type of an unhealthy workplace environment.

Working with dogs can be challenging and rewarding. Tailz provides a ton of hands on training as well as a course to learn dog behaviour and body language. It takes a number of shifts to be confident in properly handling dogs. All staff are expected to take the online course in dog handling. They also paid for my Pet First Aid. If you're not learning, it's probably you. 

I love my coworkers. Management/ownership are fair. They hold you accountable and coach you should you make a mistake. It is a small business and they need staff who contribute not coast. Expect hard work, but it's rewarding work. 

Pay is on par with other pet businesses. On top of regular pay, they paid out tips monthly to based upon contributions. 

That girl who cried did so because she routinely failed to ask for clarification, did whatever she wanted to, blamed others and would get herself overwhelmed doing things others didn't have issues accomplishing. Hard to say that she would ever reflect upon herself. Ridiculous.

Working at Tailz was by far the worst job experience I have ever been through. The owner will make you feel like you will be working for a “fun” and “weird” little family, when in reality it’s an extremely toxic work environment and even the loyalist of employees have left Tailz due to poor management. As well as mental health, your physical health is at stake as well. When working there in the middle of the pandemic, we were told to share a single mask with the entire front end, when we were done with the mask we were told to spray it with some chemicals and then stick it back in the drawer. There are also some dogs there that are way too aggressive to be in daycare, the solution at Tailz is to rotate dogs in kennels, so more than likely your dog will be sitting in a kennel alone for half their stay, but that’s not as bad as the small dogs who have to be alone all day (except for the occasional bathroom check) 

Realistically, it is not all playing with dogs. There is a lot of clean up that comes with 20+ dogs and training that must be done to properly care for them. However, the online training tools are great and the hands-on training shifts with the Canine Care Lead are super helpful. 

The owner is more remote, but can be reached at all times when there are issues that arise. I have not once come across a situation where immediate attention was needed and they were not there to provide insight and guidance. More effort goes into working for a small business, but it's nice knowing that you are supporting local businesses and people.

The most enjoyable part about the job are the Pups and their Parents. Getting to see these dogs and their people everyday and forming connections with them is very humbling. They trust you with their furry family members who go home happy and tired.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Nothing.  The owner wants you to care more about her store than she does. She won’t schedule people for Sunday then when there is a boarding dog expect you to come in on your day off to take care of the dog.  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The owner of the store.  And handling bad dogs.  That should be removed from daycare. But the owner insists on rotating dogs that don’t get along with each other so well behaved dogs could spend half their day in a crate.  

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Terrible. Most of the staff is great.  But the owner makes it a toxic work environment. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Doing the job of 3 people being paid for 1. Expected to do things WAY over your pay grade like pricing merchandise that comes in.

Working at Tailz, I enjoyed going to work. Everyone at Tailz was super awesome to get along with and very helpful to work with. I have never worked for a place that was so understanding. Management was always fair to me, respected me, and easy to talk to. The owner has taught me to always check over my work and to always do better, and I value that so much. Tailz helped me believe in myself more than I ever thought possible. Honesty and communication is key to success. Anyone who doesn't like the way that this business is ran literally has never been in a toxic work environment before, because I believe the owner and the people at Tailz are absolutely AMAZING and I was sad to leave.

It was great being with dogs but it would be nice if some of them were better behaved. I have been doing research of other dog daycare business and they have strict protocol on dogs and if they exhibit aggressive behaviour. I have seen repeated dogs come through and if they misbehave they get put in a crate. Thanks for your money here is your tired dog that barked all day! Management can be more hands on and scheduling has its issues. I don't recommend working here. Staff don't stay long from being overworked, long hours and low pay.

I’ve really enjoyed working here so far! The owner and the manager are fantastic, and my coworkers are awesome. Training is thorough and effective and great care is always taken to ensure the dogs are safe, happy, and engaged. I love working with the dogs every day, and the job itself is pretty chill and straightforward once you get used to it. I enjoy coming to work every day and appreciate having a job that’s super fun.

Would never recommend that anyone work here. The owner made me cry on several occasions and expects employees to produce top-quality work with minimal training. 

There were dog fights and unsafe animal handling practices going on on a daily basis.
