TC Energy

TransCanada used to be a great employer, however it is now facing several issues. Everyone understands the nature of the industry; the turbulent energy environment, however TC's issue is beyond that. 

Here is the issue:

1) Constant Layoffs even when the market appears to be stabilizing in 2019, disrupts the whole experience of work and teams

2) Promoting young employees who have been at TC for a fairly long time to management positions is a good idea, "BUT" only if they possess the necessary management skills. Who said someone that has been with TC for 7 or 8 years, can automatically be a good manager? Isn't management a science by itself?

3) There is a side to many O&G companies that many people don't see; The Contractors !!!!! Nowadays many Contractors are brought in, with rates much lower than what a Contractor used to charge, and these people unfortunately will never become Core Full-Time Staff (companies try to control Fixed Costs), and they eventually have to leave the company. 

4) TC has a top-down management/culture. This approach can negatively impact employees' originality, destroy their engagement, and eliminate the ability of a company to a just/fair succession plan for each vacant position that comes up (AKA: what others on indeed called "the Old Boys Club Culture")

5) Constant criticism, or in other words "leaders knowingly OR unknowingly undervaluing their employees" is a classic textbook mistake that many leaders make at TC

If you are an educated, motivated, and dedicated jobseeker reading my comment, then you want to think this through, and very thoroughly. There are many great people at TC, many smart software and applications, the Core Employee bonus/pay is good, BUT the "Culture" of a company is the most important element !!!!!

Pros:
- market pay and good bonuses (benefits below average and being reduced)
- Personal days off
- Work-life balance
- Depending on the group; decent people 

Areas of improvement
- Lack of focus and direction
- Hard to make a difference when leadership doesn’t know what they want
- Very hierarchical/manage up
- Constant organizational change at all levels/little stability 
- Rampant toxic, gossipy, nepotism, managing up, fear of retaliation culture especially in corporate services 

TC Energy does not hire or promote the best. They pass up good performers to hire their friends from the outside or internal suck ups who agree with the boss says. The existing people are made to think that they suck and we’re doing everything wrong while new hires are superstars. There is a lack of direction One day they are a dinosaur and the next a startup. 

I would suggest a management overhaul but based on their recent track record, the new leaders are worse than the old ones. Treat everyone with respect. Just because you’re a leader doesn’t make you smarter than everyone else. Allow us to do our job. Appreciate the contribution people are making not only those of your favourites.

Stay away from here unless you are in the friends and family category. If it was not for revenue from tolls, this company would not survive.

Overall I found the company okay to work for. Not a place I could see myself spending 25 years at. 

You can put in tonnes of overtime, just don't expect to be compensated for it and if you do bring up the subject be prepared to get "coached". On average a field salaried employee puts in well over the 40 hour week. If you get the option, go with hourly as they pay double OT while the rest of the salaried people volunteer their time to a multi billion dollar company.

If you are a person who seeks a challenging and dynamic environment, this is not the place for you. They constantly come up with new initiatives but never follow through. Well I shouldn't say that, they are having a rash of vehicle incidents so rather than making significant improvements such as back up cameras and such, their BRAIN BUSTER of an idea is to put a cone behind your truck and back up to it and what do you know, incidents still are happening. 

They are finally doing the BYOD/ Apple phone craze, but where the last to follow suite. You will find that innovation and new ideas are stymied at all levels because everyone has given up trying to improve the work environment there.

It was a great company to work for.  I totally loved my IT job for 16 of the 21 years I was there.  There was always much work to do, the work was interesting, the pay was good, the people were diverse (in a good way), management was mostly good, and most colleagues were either very competent or eager to learn.  In fact, most people in IT were overqualified for the jobs that they actually did, giving TC Energy a hidden reserve of talent that some of the the savvier managers tapped into.

But in the last 3 years, unwise senior management decisions meant that the IT department's strategy became misaligned with the company's core business strategy.  This exposed the IT department to aggressive budget cuts even as the rest of the company was doing OK overall.  Amazon may be able to run a delivery business and an IT product development business with the same management under the same banner, but TC Energy can't.  The focused, engaged, and efficient IT department that I once knew is gone.

TC Energy most certainly still has interesting and challenging IT work to do, and great people to work with, but senior management is unstable: accept contract work only and be prepared to leave at any time.


I was an in-house contractor who was converted to permanent role after 2 years which is how many persons become permanent staff at TC. However, the time spent as a contractor can vary wildly (you're at the mercy of your manager). The pay is great but TC does not do much engineering work so if that’s a concern for you, it would be better if you worked at a different company. You don’t learn much technical skills while there. Your experience at the company is largely dependent on your team or department (some are much more dysfunctional than others). 
Like other large companies, TC is rife with office politics, bureaucracy and in the last few years subject to frequent reorganizations which severely hamper productivity. Many of the reorgs resulted in confusion at the lower end of the pole showing a great disconnect between the upper management and the regular workers. Often, you won’t get a say in where you end up until you are working in a role you did not originally apply for. The benefits used to be great prior to 2020 but they have cut back on many aspects.

Large, Canadian-owned, and corporately responsible company.  Cross-border footprint, diverse business entities, and numerous opportunities.  Large operating footprint with numerous new-build opportunities in both non-renewables transportation and renewables facility development.


Not unlike many of the companies in Calgary, there have been and continue to be job cuts.  Even employees with superior performance ratings, like myself and several others, will likely eventually find themselves on the wrong project or in the wrong area of the company that gets cut.  This also affects performance of current employees who are often on edge, concerned about the longevity of their current positions.

TransCanada hires the best overall people and generally treats them pretty well.  Most of the company is committed to work-life balance and diversity initiatives. The pay is probably towards the higher end for most employers.  the company has good benefits, pension plan, ergonomic assessments, etc.

As most managers hire for fit, there are little to no employee relationship problems or organizational "terrorists". The culture is very team-based and collaborative, and strong performance is often recognized.

Toxic environment!!!!! Pay is not great compared to other companies. All they do is come up with new plans/projects and then go through constant re-org (every 6-12 months) to lay more people off. They expect a lot from less staff that are already overworked and stressed from the constant changes. They preach mental health but in the end it’s about the dollar. This company used to value their people with the previous President, but have proven over and over this does not exist any longer. It’s sad to see what used to be a great place turn so negative. They need to do more for their people. Show it instead of just lip service. They pick favourites and if you’re not brown nosing then good luck to you!!

A very nice place to work- typical day starts at 8.00am but they are flexible with your timing, taking into consideration each employees individual, personal and family needs; Learned to work as a team in getting assignments completed and on schedule and also in making decisions and prioritizing on my tasks; management is okay as they encourage and push you to succeed while my co-workers were generally nice in terms of helping one to reach our work goals; Hardest part of the day was getting started especially on days when you have long meetings while the most enjoyable part of the job was getting to express myself and make myself heard. Also, when I keep to my work schedule and delivered on my assignments as and when due.
