Tech Data is a distributor of I.T. hardware, software and service products.  Tech Data sold product through our reseller partners.

As a National Account Manager, I was the outside sales representative responsible for the National resellers such as CDW, Insight, Dell, Softchoice, and TigerDirect - and responsible for managing these accounts.

My responsibility included developing relationships with purchasing, product management, and their sales teams.  I enjoyed the relationship management, working with their teams uncovering larger sales opportunities.  I was responsible for larger RFP's, uncovering longer term business opportunities (in regards to vendors or services offered), as well as ensuring the daily run rate business ran smoothly.

I led our inside team through formal meetings as well as informal discussions, offering encouragement and strategic help when required.

My bonus was based on Revenue and $CGP monthly targets.  Management was always encouraging - gave specific goals and gave us the flexibility on how to achieve them.

It was a demanding job and alot of follow up was done at the end of the day - I had the ability to work in the evenings, enjoyed this flexibility.

Techdata provided a comfortable space for employees to flourish. A typical day in the warehouse would consist of arriving early to chat with other employees in a lounge area for about 10 minutes before starting work. As soon as you stepped into the warehouse the culture shifted to a more competitive and fast paced atmosphere. With not much time to relax, the work demanded your full attention and dedication the job at hand. Only postive things can be taken away from this experience as I learned how to stay on task and get a job done while limiting myself to any distractions. The hardest part of the job was coping with the hot and humid work envirionment in the mezzanine and not letting that effect how well you perform the task. The company provided many facilities to help employees cope with the heat. The most enjoyable part was how the job required you to think and react quickly. Speed and accuracy was essential to being successful and I enjoyed always having to be on my toes.

Lots of work but once you learn their systems it becomes 2nd nature. Great staff, great culture, great management! Really enjoyed working there. Great experience gained as people who do leave tend to find amazing jobs afterwards. The company generally does care about you but pay is weak because it is low margin business. It is technically fair for that industry, but is not enough to survive on if single in the GTA. Recommend having dual income if you wish to live comfortably. Very difficult to work your way up to a leadership position, even if you are one of their best. They preach a lot about diversity & have many programs for minority voices to be heard; unfortunately that visible diversity disappears at middle management. Your co-workers may be diverse, but chances are your management & above will look like a 1980's office. I don't think that was intentional though.

Tech Data is a place where you can do a lot of work or get by doing not so much work. 
The culture is very slow paced and relaxed.
Whether you're in Product Marketing or Sales or if you're a buyer, you can really work at your own pace with little to no urgency.
It is a great place to work if you don't have any aspirations whatsoever to advance your career.

Management: Great for most parts but most of management has been around for 10+ years which inevitably reduces your chances of becoming a manager.

Workplace Culture: Depends on which department you're in. Stay away from sales as I've had fellow colleagues say the sales department is very "high-school" like (Immature, gossip, etc)

The most enjoyable part: When it's time to clock out and food trucks in the summertime.

Account Manager       Aug 2011 to Mar 2016 • Proactively developed strategic customer attainment plans (CAP) with Field Sales and Inside Managers.  • Grew initial client account base from 5 clients to 140 within 2 years. • Accountable for customer Year over Year revenue growth, profit to profit ratios, and overall achievement plans for each client.   • Analyze historical clientele data vs current company metric targets. • 145 Resellers accounts tallying $3M /per monthly quota. • Comprehensive understanding of each Resellers purchasing behaviors and business trends. • Effectively negotiate company gross margins.

At Tech Data no two days are the same. Due to the nature of the I.T. industry and everchanging customer needs the need to adapt to different situations on a day to day basis is instrumental. You have to be able to balance administrative work with proactive sales activites such as calling out to your client base. Through Tech Data I learned a lot in terms of active ways to sell, different approaches on how to penetrate client accounts and grow business effectively. The hardest part of the job is balancing the low pay and the amount of work that needs to be done. Most enjoyable part of the job is the environment and if you're a salesperson the everchanging market.

You'll be placed in a team of people that have been there forever so they can 'guide' you however, all the horrible calls inbound and outbound, guess who's making them? Every time there's problem with a team order, whether it is to track the product, contact the customer to apologize etc.. guess who's making that call? You are! While all the others sit back and keep getting sales call and keeping their numbers high up. Before you know it, you'll be called into the managers office for a talk because your numbers are low.

Tech Data is a great company to work for. It is a fun and semi-fast paced environment. However, there is little place to grow and management is lacking management skills, oddly enough. The culture in the company is great and everyone is very friendly. The hardest part of the job is not knowing what is to come. The most enjoyable part of the job is being involved in various events while working closely with vendors.

Management always takes care of its workers in a very simple manner.

Very simple and easy to explain to others and show the right path.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It is always a busy day, there is no problem of work, you will always be busy.

Anybody who doesn't have ambition and values security over all other needs should work there.

Channel Sales, is really order-fulfillment   If you find that exciting, then Tech Data, Ingram or any of those other distributors are the spot for you  Because really all you do is contribute to the supply chain process
