TELUS Spark Science Centre

I love working in my department so far at Telus Spark. My management team is very caring, empathetic and accommodating. I found they trained me very well, and they care about my needs and limitations. While sometimes there is ups and downs for security and reliability for dependable hours, i’ve found they do their best to accommodate any needs that the team has. I always learn new things, and they ignite passion for my field. 

Overall, the upper management could be more caring about their hourly workers, and provide base level benefits, similar to what they do for their salaried staff. I cannot speak for any other teams and their training, or work culture, however my experiences have all been great. Spark is a great place that does have its areas of improvement, when considering their hourly and front line workers. 

I'm currently the Marketing & Communications Intern at TELUS Spark; the new science centre. A typical day of work includes crafting social media content on Twitter and Facebook, researching events and festivals where our core audience will be present, and representing SPARK as a Brand Ambassador through the Outreach program. When I'm in the office, I have the privilege to work alongside the Marketing & Communications Team which guides me in the direction I need to go. What I like most about working at TELUS Spark is the warm, friendly and relaxed environment. Upon arriving for my first day I was introduced to the whole team, given a tour, and prompted on my first job. They keep me busy, and there is a never a dull moment. The most enjoyable part of my job is that I'm working with a fun, diverse and unique non-profit organization who is taking what I have learned in the classroom and allowing me to utilize it in the workplace.

Telus Spark is a vibrant, fluid company that is not stuck in silo mentalities.  All departments seek influence and input from all over departments.  Employees all take proliferate in stealing shamelessly from others ideas and building upon them .  
There seems to be inclusiveness and diversity in abundance in hiring philosophies so employees tend to be in that mindset before coming aboard .  Amazing melting pot success.   Cod be some improvement of recognizing that some age discrimination has taken root.  It’s as if looking to the future means only hiring young... without recognizing the experience of that acquired with age.
If Spark paid better I believe employees would never leave.  It is the dream job of a lifetime.  Just saying.... the work is that fun and rewarding!

A typical day involves a mix of technical troubleshooting, hands-on repairs, and creative problem solving. 
I learned how to combine electrical skills with practical exhibit design, and gained valuable experience. 
Management was approachable and open to ideas. The workplace culture is collaborative, curious, and encourages experimentation. The hardest part of the job was juggling unexpected technical breakdowns while also keeping projects on track, but that also kept the work interesting. The most enjoyable part was seeing visitors interact with exhibits I helped design or repair—it made the technical effort feel rewarding and meaningful.

Typically working at spark as a Daily Operations team member consists of being told to stand at an exhibit alone, you are not allowed to engage in the exhibit unless a guest engages you and socializing is strongly discouraged. 

The work culture seems great at first, until you realize every department is out for themselves, the floor team has too much of a staff overflow to the point fulltime employees are only getting 24-30 hours a week. 

The best part of the job is free access to the science centre, especially for the spark after darks. Things are quite overpriced so if you have the employee discount it makes it affordable so that’s a good benefit.

The organization went through a big change in direction in 2011. It  was previously regarded by community with fondness and affection and were hoping for a bright, optimistic place for informal learning. In its new form it  has become an organization that has developed a patronizing, elitist attitude towards its customers. How can you trust a science centre that doesn't even have the word "science" or "learning" in it's mission statement? 

The result has been a disillusioned staff that tries to sell a "museum" to calgarians who react with either indifference or displeasure.

A typical day at work includes following the scheduled activities,  receive the kids, play with them and work at the reception of
the general public, providing general information regarding available services, points of interest and entertainment attractions and also, recording the tickets of the guests. The workplace culture is multicultural, funny and spends a lot of energy as possible. The management was clear and flexible as well. I learned to be careful all the time, play a lot, pay attention and get much responsibility as well.

Spark is a super fun work environment with the kindest people and very engaging work. Recently the CEO left and that's the best thing that has happened to Spark in recent times. While she was a nice person and very inspiring and creative she was also a micromanager, gave nobody control over their own work, and constantly changed her mind on projects and organizational work on a whim which was very chaotic for everyone leaving people stressed and anxious all the time. I think a lot of the staff were really relieved when she moved on. I see great things ahead for Spark now.

TELUS Spark is a fast-paced workplace. If you like interacting with people and learning about science, you might be excited to work here. Very neat and clean. It's a good place to improve your communication skills but you'll get stuck if you are not familiar with science. Managers were more interested in updating displays and selling products than creating a healthy atmosphere at FOH. Low salaries.

It is unfortunate that a few bad apples can ruin an otherwise good job. But my supervisor was disorganized and very much lacking and the manager in Charge was non-extant at the best of times. I was let go without so much as a written warning, I would have liked to known what if anything I was doing wrong so I could improve in future. But sadly they just let me go without a second thought.
