-typical day/night at work involved; writing thorough and detailed notes throughout the day, filling out shovel sheets at the end of the day, compaction testing on lifts placed, taking samples of materials and taking them to the lab, talking to engineers and planners about the project and concerns, identifying and classifying material types that mining equipment are digging, relaying specs and design controls to operations and team leads, entering testing and sampling results on computer

-co-workers were easy to get along with, all became friends and hangout after work

-hardest part of the job would be to get operations to follow the cleaning and placing specs of a lift during winter

- most enjoyable part of my job would be the overall learning experience and opportunities to work with numerous people and different projects

Been with Terracon for 3 years and it has been a great 3 years

A typical day at work will be in the field conducting compaction testing, concrete testing and construction monitoring. Working with QA/QC, engineers, supervisors, and foremen on site with the ongoing construction. 

I learned a great amount of knowledge and experience in the construction industry, the oil/gas industry and more.

The co-workers at Terracon are great. They push you to become a better you, and strive to lead you into the right direction for your future

The hardest part of my job, i would say is time management.

The most enjoyable part of my job would be getting to meet new workers and being in the field working on something new every day.

Although I was unhappy in the way my time was managed, how certain csa protocols were followed, and ultimately how my contract was ended in a very unprofessional fashion, I would like to say that this is one of the better geotech companies out there, and I have worked for a few. The upper management is very good and the people are pleasant. Unfortunately, I feel that the contract work lends subconsciously some leeway to treat employees as temporary assets rather than human resources, which is just business I guess. I would also like to add that although 99% of the employees are very good and easy to deal, a few of the long term personal can be very difficult and negative.

Company was set up to maximize earnings through hiring junior level staff only.  Lack of qualified oversight leads to numerous errors based off of inexperience. 

Once person becomes experienced the overhead from their office costs lead to minimal pay increases. May mid level personal need to leave in order to get paid for their expertise. This leads to high turnover and continual mistakes associated with inexperience.

A typical day at work revolves around the construction projects within the Oil Sands industry (12 hours / day).
Lots of opportunities get hands on experience at field work / lab work.
Hardest part of the job would be getting accustomed to the harsh. climate and the absence of a major city life.

If you’re a GIT/EIT, expect to be underpaid relative to your diploma tech peers in a company where they already underpay you relative to industry standards. If you can’t find another job, they’ll likely hire you but make sure you keep looking for something better. There is 0 advancement for growth and no raises. 

People are nice here at the office but on the field it gets tough since you r sleep deprived, takes long to get to sites and they don't like when u oppose their way of management

Terracon is a small company that offers you opportunities to learn other specialties. 

When supporting mining operations the schedules and compensation causes alot of workers to look for more opportunities.

great management and coworkers train you very well, just be sure that you book time off way in advance cause they will try and get you to work as much as they legally can.

Company has great employees, and field management, but the managers in Calgary and in Fort McMurray are not approachable and do not understand what the job in the field is like.
