THE ELLIOTT COMMUNITY

I have been part of the Elliott Community since 2008 and have to say that it is genuinely a terrific place to work.  Everyday I am motivated to come to work, my co-workers and residents have become true friends and we all take pride in what we achieve together to create the best possible care and home for the residents. 

The management team is approachable and friendly. There is an open door atmosphere and I feel comfortable talking to any of the managers if I have a problem - they are fair and they take the time to listen. I always feel like I matter.

Even though I haven't worked anywhere else in more than eight years, I still recognize what a great place this is and know that I'm fortunate to be part of a 'one of a kind' organization.  

The pension is outstanding and one of the best in Canada (OMERs). The benefit plan is also excellent and fairly affordable, the Elliott shares the cost of the plan. The wages are fair, especially for a not-for-profit charity and they are reviewed each year. 

If there are problems, management will deal with it quickly and they show genuine interest in me and my future.  I feel very lucky to be part of such a great organization.  

The Elliott may have high expectations but that goes hand-in-hand with the high standards of care. I personally love knowing that I am part of such a meaningful, well run operation, where my top notch skills are recognized and valued.

While most of the staff here are friendly and approachable, the management are poorly organized and take zero responsibility. What started out as a workplace showing promise quickly transformed into work overload, high stress and no clear organization. Management would rather fire staff who speak out, point out inefficiencies than actually address the problems that are obvious here.  When staffing levels are low, staff are forced to pick up the work load with no clear dictation of responsibilities, or increased pay for extra work. Instead, staff are told that they are not doing enough and should work harder. Even if you do put in the extra effort, it goes unrecognized and unnoticed by management. It seems that staff who are lazy and are in the management's clique are the ones who benefit the most. 
Absolutely zero opportunity for advancement or to take professional development courses. Even asked if the company would pay to have me recertified in CPR/First Aid (as it is a health care setting) and was denied.
Maintenance management has no clear replacement or building management schedule, so major issues occur frequently. Burst pipes and equipment breakdowns happen with increasing regularity, only serving to backlog the amount of maintenance tasks. When these issues occur after hours or on weekends, staff are basically left to fend for themselves with no SOPs or management direction.
It is a place to avoid!

This was a terrible experience. They expected you to work wherever you were told, regardless if you were trained there. You could have been trained there a day and they would send you up to work on the unit for weeks and when you'd make an error it was all your fault, not understanding that you obviously needed more training. Rude and inappropriate comments from staff members. Management VERY OBVIOUSLY favoured the RN AND watch your backs with this place, they like to report people for random things to your coverning body, so if you're with the CNO or CPO or whoever you're license is with, make sure to watch management, if you make 1 mistake or do 1 thing they arent too happy with- even if you are new, they are the type to write you up to youre college and try to make problems with your license. No respect for peoples lives. When you were off they call non stop. Always screwing up schedules and never knowing when the other team member is supposed to be coming in. NO management team helps you, they just walk around on their phones.  Ridiculous workplace. Oh and the pay.. not worth the amount of work you do.. might as well go to the hospital.. you have 5 patients to work with for 5 bucks more at the hospital instead of 30 patients.

I had the opportunity to complete my placement at Elliot Community as a Personal Support Worker, and it was an outstanding experience. My mentor, a woman with 25 years of experience, along with the entire staff, was incredibly supportive and always willing to teach. They helped me gain valuable skills while ensuring I felt confident in my role. The nurses were particularly supportive, and the team consistently provided client-centered care. I also appreciated the well-organized schedule, which made the experience run smoothly and enjoyable. Their encouragement helped me grow, and I was even hired to work during the summer.

During my time at Elliot Community, I worked in both the retirement home and long-term care. The company truly prioritizes the well-being of its residents, ensuring they are always in good hands. The pay is fair, and the positive working environment made me feel right at home. I highly recommend Elliot Community to anyone seeking a supportive, resident-focused workplace.


Most people at the Elliott genuinely care about each other, and try to help each other succeed/get what they need. They care about the seniors who are in their care, and everyone treats them and their fellow coworkers like family. Their benefit package is awesome, and they are one of the few places that give part timers amazing benefits. Depending on where you are, sometimes there is room for growth, but for the most part-whatever you start as, you will most likely stay in that position for the time period you are there for (otherwise you will be waiting a very long time for any kind of change in status). There is a lot of events that include employees, and a lot of employee appreciation. Also depending on your job, there is not a great work/life balance, however, some of the jobs are able to achieve that.  Overall, highly recommend this place to work for. It is a rare jem left in the work industry.

Companies say they are a great place to work, but are they really? Its been more than 5 years and this is by far the best place I have ever worked. If people don't like it here, it's just because they have never worked anywhere else. The management team is supportive and the culture is very positive in most of the departments. The pay is great, but the pension and benefits are even better. Last week, a new program was emailed out that blew my mind, my husband can't believe it. Most of the staff are professional and bring a positive attitude to work. Seriously, I'm a lifer.

I started here just a few months ago and really like it.  The staff are very friendly and I had a lot of training.  The managers are easy to talk to and they make a point of meeting new people after they are hired.  I like my schedule and hope to get more hours soon so that I can quit my other job. If I get permanent PT I can join the benefit plan which is very important to me.  With my shift premiums I earn more than my other job and eventually I can join the pension. Even though I am new and working my way up, I have a set schedule which I really like.  There are callins but I can plan my life and easily coordinate two schedules.  Many of my co-workers are long term employees and for the most part they seem very happy, there are only a few negative nellies.  Everyone seems genuinely interested in doing a good job and that what is most important to me.  I would definitely recommend it as a good place to work.

I liked working at the Elliott.  The people are great, including the managers.  I read the other posts and some are unkind but honestly I never had a problem, i always found that I was treated fairly and respectfully.  I can only assume that these negative posts are by former employees who the managers had to deal with.  I had a problem one time and my manager was quick to deal with it and I was grateful for her support.  I left because my other job offered more hours and a better schedule but if things were different i would go back in a heartbeat, i am still on their casual call in list hoping to see a full-time position posted.  Regarding the negative posts, don't believe everything you read, this is a good place to work.

The work environment here is very supportive and inclusive. From what I have seen the majority of staff and management get along very well and work together to better the lives of our residents. The pay I wouldn't say is high or low, however the benefits and pension plan are extremely good and even some part time staff are eligible. Seemingly every month, there is some sort of different event/program like free food, t-shirts, gift cards etc. Overall, I enjoy coming to work each day, feel comfortable with everyone here and would recommend working here to others.

The Elliott Community is the best work environment I have ever been a part of. In my experience working at The Elliott I have experienced nothing but fair and supportive management- and I am left feeling as if there is genuine support and concern for employee wellbeing both at work and outside of it. While working here I have been impressed by the many free lunch, employee appreciation perks and opportunities here. To anyone considering applying at The Elliott, I would recommend working here.
