THE SCOTT MISSION

I worked at this camp over the summer and had a very difficult experience. Many staff were overwhelmed to the point of panic attacks because of the high-pressure and often dismissive management approach. Safety concerns were frequently raised, but leadership rarely listened unless every staff member collectively pushed back.

There were times when programs went ahead despite clear warnings that they were unsafe, and unfortunately campers were sometimes hurt because of it. Trust in leadership was low, especially when staff received mixed messages—being praised one moment and undermined the next.

Most of the real work with campers fell on a handful of dedicated but underpaid staff, while certain senior staff were rarely involved in managing situations despite being paid far more. The camp could be significantly better if leadership prioritized safety, listened to front-line staff, and modeled the servant-leadership expected in a camp environment.

Assisted kids from grade 4-5 teaching grammar and vocabulary. Engaged with both middle schoolers and high schoolers by teaching lessons, doing activities and providing food/snacks. Management was highly exceptional, made communication clear and valued each worker. Workplace culture was relaxing, not too fast-paced, and everyone treated one another with respect and kindness. The hardest part of the job was sometimes not having enough work to do throughout the week. The most enjoyable part was getting to know the co-workers and seeing youth.

10 years post university and I have no regrets. I was able to use all of my talents and eventually provide leadership and training to other staff. Working in the iner-city of Toronto and spending summer at the camp Caledon gave me a  wide range of experiences that allowed me to pursue further goals in my second career as a public school teacher. During my time there I was given opportunity to plan develop new programs in response to specific community needs many times.

Dealing with the the large numbers of community who come for food and they don't like wiing

Very well cultured and respect clients

Decision making within the company without management staff

It is a highly religious company to work with. As a Christian, I loved working in The Scott Mission. Job culture and responsibilities go together very well. Also, the management team was amazingly supportive and encouraging! They will support you spiritually, physically and mentally to prepare you to serve the vulnerable youth. The minus are pays, hours and benefits - it's the NGO. Also, it is fairly hard to be a fulltime employee as limited pool is open.

The Scott Mission is a place with very old and backwards thinking that's needs to change with the way the times are going. I believe that it can be a great place with the right people in charge.

usually you start off checking in going straight to work, everything is simple and straightforward. I learned that to do everything ace paced and have yourself organized. Most hardest part was to keep up with the pace but I managed my time wisely and I was able to maintain. Everything was calm and enjoyable with a friendly environment.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Doing intake to the client,serving preparing meals for the clients etc.

Dealing with mentally challenging circumstances 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy schedule sometimes on weekends

The Scott Mission is a fun environment where a lot of learning is being done. My co-workers & campers are loving, caring and very helpful. Everyday we do learn and do new activities, we try new food & meet new people. I recommend The Scott Mission to anyone who loves the out doors.

I volunteered there and was pleased to find it was fun environment while still working like a well oiled machine. Helping the less fortunate definitely made you feel like even something little like volunteering for the day can really make a change in someone’s life.
