A typical day involved answering phones, dealing with customers, carriers and managers and entering relevant information on the computer system. It involved customer issues such as billing, vacation requests and service changes, as well as delivery issues, carrier route changes and district manager requests. I learned how to set up routes for carriers. Managers were easy to approach. Hardest part of the job was trying to calm down irate customers which I always succeed at. Most enjoyable part of the job was knowing customers were satisfied by the end of the call.

A typical day includes moving from different areas in the GTA to go door to door in neighborhoods to advertise the monthly subscriptions of the Toronto Newspaper. This job has refined my communication skills with people. It has also brought me out of my comfort zone to meet new people, as you are always working with different people everyday. I have also learned how to properly conduct transactions through credit card, cash, and cheque. 

Love the job, because every day was different, depending upon production , I enjoyed the fast pace and resolving issues, most people were great, lots of pressure, and accountability. But enjoyed my career at the star, miss it

This job isn't suited for everyone because you get paid per sale and if you don't make any sales then you basically work for free. It isn't guaranteed that you will make money at this job.

When advertising revenue was flowing in, the atmosphere and culture were great. When declines started to happen, all of that changed. Staff didn't love their work like they used to and was very difficult to compete with the media that migrated to online much sooner.

Declining business. Rounds of layoffs became more and more frequent while I was there.

People, benefits were good, but we’re being changed before I left.

Work three weekends on every 4 weeks. Straight time pay on weekends and overtime work. Involuntary overtime required. Involuntary shift extension. $1.35/hr night shift premiums. No afternoon shift premiums.

Good job. Union job. There was a fitness centre and growth opportunities. Unfortunately cutbacks and layoffs abound. wished I could have stayed there, but just beat a round of layoffs in my department when I left.

... and very dedicated. The sense of mission seems to have been lost in recent years. The newspaper industry is in decline so frequent layoffs have seriously hurt morale.

In the mailing room we were the department who inserted the paper and got the paper out after if was printed.
It was a great company to work for, there were a lot of great people
