As a cashier you're the front line. Tasks include ensuring customers are greeted and offer the best service you are capable of offering, as well as keeping the front end of the store presentable (tidying the clothing department, sweeping, cleaning, etc). As well as good loss prevention practices (This goes especially for the Sarnia location). Occasionally management will delegate tasks such as processing new product (tagging, pricing, etc). As with any cashier position, it is a lot of standing, and during the busy period, ie Christmas, it gets a little chaotic, but don't let that frighten you, the customers are more often than not very understanding and patient. Communication is key however, and in some respects that needs to be worked on. The hardest part of the job (for me personally) is handling unruly customers. But, management will have your back in most situations. The most enjoyable part of the job is the atmosphere, it's very laid back, and everyone is honest with each other, we treat everyone as family. As far as work/life balance goes, part time employees have a lot of wiggle room. Depending on the season, hour cut backs tend to hurt. But it certainly gives you free time for other jobs/activities. Full timers, the hours are long, and many times you need to be willing to stay late or even bring your work home with you to meet deadlines. Time management is everything, but it becomes difficult when during shifts when the store is very busy.

Overall though, it's quite enjoyable. Certainly there will be bad days, but there will be good days. I've personally gained a lot of experience working for this company, and honestly I feel if everyone did at least one year of retail work, the world would be a better place. TSC is an excellent place to start if you're new to the job world, and there is a lot of room for advancement if you put in the effort.

The highest employee turnover I have ever seen or heard of!

I truly loved waking up in the morning to go work for this company for the first 6 years I was employed for them. 

I put my heart & soul into everything I did. There has been some major changes in the culture and the upper management at the corporate office in the past 5 years. The Vice president of Operations who works at the corporate office in London is a very very DIFFERENT kinda person> ( I have to be nice or this won't get posted)

Many former employees and I'm positive most current ones would be able to tell you; every day your watching your back and feel like no matter how well your performance is you can be eliminated at any point in time!! It would appear to some that TSC has a very good track record of that.

Certainly not an employer with whom you would ever consider entertaining a lengthy career. You would certainly quit or have your employment terminated before that could be established.

If you have no self worth and feel like committing employment suicide. If you enjoy working 70 hours a week and only getting paid for 43, If you have no family or friends or social life what so ever, If you like having your boss humiliate you in front of co-workers, if you enjoy a sexist work environment, If you like worrying every waking moment that regardless of how well you perform your job you can be terminated at any second then just maybe, this is the company for you.

I worked for Tsc for almost 4 years.  It was one of my first real jobs.  Starting when I was 17 and being forced out when I was 20. So yes I met a lot of awesome people and had great experiences with Coworkers.  But there was always one manager who was very rude and unprofessional and I would come home crying daily with how mean she was.  It was like torture working with her.  And no support came from upper management or Hr when contacted. Luckily I always had support from the actual store manager and in my last year he gave me the opportunity to advance as service manager.  Unfortunately other childish older employees who couldn't stand to be "taking orders from a child" turned sour out of nowhere after being your best friend for years and went behind my back and sabotaged my position by writing an "anonymous" email to head office with links to my social media which had nothing to do with my position as current manager.  Within a day head office was at my store telling me they could no longer have me working for them but that they value my dedication and loyalty.  GIVE ME A BREAK.  I did nothing but treat everyone with respect and kindness and got tossed away like Tuesdays trash because of some old with who thought she ran the place because she was "head cashier" meanwhile nobody liked her.  I tried to fight my case as wrongful dismissal but they played me and put my record as resigned from position unexpectedly.  

Basically Tsc blows huge chunks. But like any job you meet good and bad people.  But if you want to go back to high school then it's the place to be! Just don't associate yourselves with grumpy old women who think they run the cash.

The job started with excitement and ended with me feeling blindsided. I started there after someone had quit with the expectations that I would learn the job as I went along as the only form of training was an excel file explaining how to run some programs. 

There was parts of my job that I loved, primarly the parts where I was actually practicing the skills I learned in university. However the corporate culture there was toxic. If I needed help with work many of the other employees were unwilling to help. I wouldn't say its the other employees fault as I would with management. There are extensive tight deadlines and no one has time to work ahead. Management would expect things done as they were given out as top priority but would forget about the daily work that needs to be done.

During my orientation I was told I would get performance reviews and 3 and 6 months. I did not get either after almost 7 months I was called into HR and was told they were restructuring and my position was no longer needed. On the surface I felt that perhape they were being honest, but the more I talk to other past TSC employees it seemed to be a common trend where they would get rid of anyone who wasn't good friends with management.

to give you an idea of how overworked the staff is there, I had over 30 hours of overtime in 7 months, while my manager would leave work on time everyday!

- extremely toxic environment
- great co-workers
- terrible management
- very long hours w/ lots of overtime and no compensation
-upper management would continually hand out additional                  responsibilities and expect them to be done immediately with no regard of other daily tasks or responsibilities.
- I would work 75 plus hours per week sometimes while my boss is at home by 5 pm everyday. 
-no training or performance evaluations
- no positive enforcement or motivation
- unrealistic expectations
- immoral values of upper management with illegal activities used on a daily basis.
- the CEO is a great guy but he doesn't work at the corporate office. he works in Toronto most of the time and doesn't see everything that's going on everyday at the corporate office. 
- sexist management. Vice President feels women shouldn't be performing management roles and men can do it better.
- illegal terminations are a daily occurrence.

This is 1 company where the MOL needs to do some in depth investigations.

Don't waste your time on this place people, you'll regret it in the end!

I had worked for TSC for almost 11years and was looking forward to 4 weeks holidays next year. I consider myself a good employee,started early  and stayed late. Always had a good reveiw,never a problem. Recently I arrived  to work on Monday morning and was met at the punch clock by a manager. He greeted me and ask me to bring my lunch bag and follow him to a inner office. In the office sat the H.R representive. I was handed a letter and was told it would explain everything. The letter stated that due to restructuring my position was terminated. I was escorted like some common criminal out the door. There was no Thank you for my services all the years employed. There was a foul up on my paper work and I had to go back to straighten things out. While I was there I noticed alot of part-time workers still there that made less money and had no benefits. I was later told that others were let go . There was one employee let go that had worked for TSC for over 25 years. I don't feel that I was treated fairly . I am in my mid 50's and I am finding it very difficult to find suitable employment.

I've been a cashier for TSC Stores for a few years and the job is fairly easy. You put customers through at the register, answer phones, make online orders and process refunds or exchanges. When we get a truck in, we as cashiers, are responsible of pricing and tagging any clothing item and placing them in the proper aisles. Also, with every season change, there are plannograms that need to be worked (removing all clothing product from one aisle and replacing it with new product while following the plannogram sent by head office). The hardest part about the position is having to explain to customers why a certain product that is on sale, is not in store. It does get very frustrating to have to explain every week, that we just don't have said product in store however, you can always suggest to give them a rain check, order it online (at home or in store) or request a store to store transfer.

a typical day at TSC is faced with a lot of challenges, usually to the start of the day they barely have enough machines for every working person. Everything is now based on a quota system that doesn't match with the work that has to be done. Picks vs Pieces is the most common fight that occurs with workers not being able to hit a quota.
There has been a lack of loyalty that surrounds TSC whether it has to do with hours being cut for people who work hard and have been around longer than others or its the part time employees that get laid off within a days notice about 2 times a year. Part-timers/seasonal will be offered 40 hours a week when busy and it looks promising that you will stay doing full-time hours until it's not as busy and they start cutting hours.
There is little chance of moving up as everyone usually just does one job until they retire or quit.

Not a company you would want to work for and definitely not a store you want to work in! The managers at this location are not honest. They do not care about their employees in the store. Nothing but problems! When Head Office was approached about this store and things that had gone on they did absolutely nothing! So much so that they were made aware of the managers going against a company policy and did not do a thing! 
The store is unorganized and when management is told about things they do nothing about it. The management is unorganized but you cannot organize a store by sitting in your office all day.
There is absolutely no incentive and no appreciation for anything that you do
Word of advice, look elsewhere if you are thinking of working at this store!

I've been working at TSC for almost nine months now and I have to say, it is somehow the most easy-going and relaxed but still productive and hard working workplace I've ever been to. The staff is like one big family, the management is understanding and easy to talk to. Management frequently checks in to make sure you don't have any concerns you'd like to discuss, they also give you the option to talk to the district manager if you don't feel comfortable discussing with them. Going into work is always enjoyable, everyone is constantly smiling and joking around. Being a cashier there isn't the best thing in the world due to price adjustments that need to be done however, being cross-trained as a clerk is handy.
