Tank Traders

The job posting lies. You will be paid nigh minimum wage and you will most likely stay there. They advertise benefits after six months; you will not be here six months as the shop shuts down in September and only certain positions stay on. I can't imagine why you'd want to work here in the -40 winters, anyway.

You'll be breaking your back with 40+ pound bottles of propane — don't forget that you must take one in each hand! — 10 hours a day. Apparently, 10 hours a day is "optional", but they conveniently forgot to tell their staff that until just this month. Still hoping to "enjoy summer" like the ad says with those perfect summer hours? Lol, you're gonna be here six days a week and when you do go home, you'll be too tired, sunburnt, and sore to even think about anything other than sleep.

Your "cell leaders" are either mouthy teens or adults who act like teens, and they just finished a Jimi Hendrix experience or popping pills in their car on break. Stand still for a second and they're all over you like Amy Schumer on a glazed ham, but they'll spend the next 20 - 30 minutes standing around talking about video games with the forklift operator. Oh, and the longest any cell leader I met had been working for the company was just two months. Just about all their staff had quit in June, so the then-new guys were basically just given the new title.

Also, it's not really clear what the chain of command is. People with the yellow vests (cell leaders) constantly give conflicting orders, but as far as I can tell, none of them actually outrank each other. Cell-leaders get to park in the main parking lot, serfs get to park out back; back-in parking only in case the place goes up like the Hindenburg. 

The break room is dustier than Dracula's castle, the coffee in the pot has been there for weeks, and they have a recurring problem of people peeing on the toilet seat. I'd feel less grossed-out eating in a McDonald's bathroom.

Also, don't be a sissy! Get up on the pallet of out-dated tanks that we stack 5-high (well over six feet) for some stupid reason! If you don't want to risk having that whole thing come down on you from climbing it, just do your best to lift that bottle over your head. Now, we get silly hats that have plastic armor in them, so that if a bottle does come crashing down on your dome, you'll just be a quadriplegic instead of dying! Because this company is all about seeing you suffer. Well, that and the company making it rain off spit-shined propane bottles.

In fact, it literally rains propane at Tank Traders! As they opt to puncture holes in Coleman propane canisters as well as butane and spraypaint cans, often full ones that then spray out everywhere into the air. Last I checked, this is illegal and the canisters should be flared-off before puncturing. It's dangerous, and a complete waste of propane. 

Speaking of inefficiency, they make the sort crew go through pallet rows ONE PERSON PER ROW. This is is painfully slow, even for people who are good at it. Having one person identify current or outdated bottles on the pallet, cutting the sleeves off, and then passing them back to the others instead of making 10,000 trips back and forth between pallets yourself has proven to go way, way faster, but for some reason, the company refuses to adopt this mind-numbingly obvious strategy. 

Constant turnover of staff, juvenile delinquents huffin' happy grass run the show, the work environment is bad, the pay is worse, the work is punishing and dangerous, the shifts are a vampire upon the summer itself (EVERYONE works long weekends), and if you put your ear to your muscles and tendons, you can hear them groan in pain.

This place ruined BBQs for me. 0/10

Facility management is great and understanding. Corporate management has no clue how to do either their job nor the job of their employees yet still attempt to micromanage at every turn. The production crew is given unrealistic kpi's (quota) to hit causing unnecessary stress that travels downhill. Time off gets promised months in advance and then revoked days before the promised day off is given and people that had made plans for those days and weren't able to make it were written up by corporate. The director of production specifically asked 5 times in 2 consecutive days, to the same person, why a tank that just came out of a pressure washing machine was wet. During the summer you are expected to work a minimum of every second weekend but may be required to work more depending on how they set up the pool A/B shifts (last summer pool B was working 3 weekends on 1 weekend off and employees that brought this to management got reprimanded for it). They will happily have you work in a wet environment and then send you out into -40C and below weather to work for an hour plus. When the temperature drops there is serious risk of propane asphyxiation due to their system and when asked if work would be done to alleviate the risk their answer was "we will try to not fill tanks in the winter." and then proceeds to buy out their competition driving up the amount they need to fill in the winter. 

There is a reason this company is always hiring. From underpaying every position to literally treating their staff as disposable. Do not accept a job here unless as last resort.

Before the last manager quit the job was alright. It was sort of
enjoyable. The work was boring but at least shop manager stood up for
the staff.
My coworkers all seemed nice and I got along well with them. They made
the day by far the most enjoyable.
When the previous manager quit, the job culture tanked fast.
Micromanaging every single action everyone did. Despite everyone
pulling their weight and getting what needed to be done, got
completed, When we had a Good day. Instead of being recognized. They
implemented more micro managing systems.
They would often tell us they understand how equipment is old and
doesn’t work and that we shouldn’t stress out about it. But if you get
low numbers because of malfunction it’s never oh we understand it’s
always “why aren’t you getting your numbers” and then subtle passive
aggressive remarks. 

All they care about at this place is numbers. Safety isn't even a
second thought to them or third thought. If you get their numbers they
are happy. If you get hurt getting them they will take. Report. But
then make you do the same task anyways. 


The pay is decent. Not great but on or a bit better then other jobs in
the area so that’s a bonus i guess.

Overall. It’s not worth the stress to work here.

A Typical Day at Work:

Management:
Supportive and open to feedback, providing clear direction while allowing independence to manage accounts effectively.

Workplace Culture:
Collaborative and fast-paced. Teams work hard to meet goals and support each other, especially during peak periods.

Hardest Part of the Job:  Working from a desk all day. 

Most Enjoyable Part of the Job:
Building strong relationships with partners and seeing the results of teamwork translate into growth and success.

Do you like being home? Do you like knowing what days you work and what days you will have off? Are you human? 

If you answered 'Yes' to any of these...RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN!

This is seriously one of the WORST companies to work for, ESPECIALLY as a DRIVER. 

You'll never have a reliable schedule or know what days you will work or have off, much less know how long you will work, or where you will be driving to. Everything is a surprise - and they expect you to be available 24/7, with zero notice. 

The job itself will physically destroy you. Each truck holds between 5-13 tons (yes, TONS) of BBQ tanks, and they expect you to MANUALLY unload each one, using nothing but your own hands, in all weather conditions. Expect to have major back, joint, and muscle problems. 

Whatever logistics tells you, if they tell you anything, is either wrong or will change. Always expect the opposite of what you are told. Did they say you can take a day off? Be prepared for them to change their minds at the last minute. Did they tell you that you won't have to work weekends? Be prepared to work weekends. 

There are no 'Yes' and 'No' answers at this company. Everything is a 'Maybe'. 

There is nothing good about working here.

All around a great place to work. The routes range anywhere from 100km-550km of driving in a day and there is usually up to 16 stops. Most of the fleet are newer trucks which is very nice. Manager and Supervisor are easy to contact and help deal with any issues/concerns promptly and thoroughly. The hours are long, but it’s easy to book a day off if you need to. Great communication, and good compensation. I love this job because the delivery portion keeps me physically active and I’m not just sitting for the whole day. The hardest part of the job was probably getting used to the paperwork as there is both electronic and handwritten paperwork that needs to be handled accurately. It’s not complicated but takes some time to get used to. The training is great though and you won’t be expected to go on your own until you’re comfortable. It does slow down in the winter so there’s always the potential of being laid off. Overall I’d recommend tank traders to any driver looking for a solid company.

The wages are low, the work is heavy, and the equipment needed serious repairs and updating. The trailers are all used, and the company-owned tractors seriously need replacement (the leased units were OK).

The worst part of the job is that the wages are LOW - very low. There's no way a Class 1 driver hauling dangerous goods should be getting paid $22/hr. You also pay for ALL meals while on the road, and there's no allowance for it. You DO get a small allowance for your cell phone, but $10/month doesn't even come close to covering your use on the company's behalf.

Dispatch is extremely optimistic when it comes to scheduling your route, there's no time allotted for things such as meals, accidents, detours, not being able to park close to the cages, etc, etc.

You're also required to go to landfills and sort through propane tanks to pick out ones the company can repaint, put a new valve in, and sell as their own - this is part of their business model.

All in all, unless you desperately need the work to keep a roof over your head, stay away, stay FAR away. I worked there for the summer of '15 and would never go back.

Constant repetitive hard work which will break you down over the course of a week with unrealistic quotas and horrific pay. The training which was supposed to take 10 days never ended up being finished in the time I worked there as they would put you at a station show you how to do it once and expect you to know what to do if anything went wrong. The hardest part of the job was meeting quota while the machines would mess up causing you to constantly need to take pauses to fix them. The management was not good as they would often make you work in the same position for 2 halves of the day and complain when you don’t hit quota. The only enjoyable part of the job was when you were given work that isn’t part of the routine schedule which would happen maybe once every 2 weeks. The absolute worse of the worst was that instead of working later each day to hit your quota they would instead force you to take a day out of your weekend to make up for it. 
Overall I would not recommend this job to anybody unless you are very desperate.

Overall I loved working here (Bowmanville yard). I met some amazing new friends and for the most part always had fun with my coworkers.

Summer months are long, up to 14 hours. Winter is slow, maybe 2-3 shifts a week, so bank hours or EI. Our supervisor was awesome, he knew our job and supported his drivers.

Pay was not great, it is a hard job and not everyone can do it. 

One of my biggest concerns was after a long day, you get saddled with addons which can add a few hours to your run. I felt like upper management didn't see people with families and obligations, we were just delivery drivers. 

Most staff is in Manitoba, so they don't have a relationship with the drivers.  Manitoba had a lot of input in to how routes were done, despite not being familiar with the areas we delivered to. This led to a lot of frustration on the drivers part because the routes didn't make sense but we got in trouble if we moved them around to be more efficient. 


Long hours made it impossible to find childcare, so I unfortunately had to leave. 



Tank Traders is a great company overall, especially if you enjoy staying active and working outdoors. The work culture is genuinely positive, co-workers are supportive and approachable, and were always willing to show me the ropes. There’s a good sense of teamwork day-to-day and management treats us with respect.

The job itself is definitely physical, so it’s a good fit if you don’t mind lifting, moving tanks and being on your feet. Working outside was a perk because I like fresh air and don’t want to be stuck behind a desk, though weather can sometimes make days challenging.

Overall, Tank Traders is a solid employer with a good atmosphere and clear expectations. I was looking for hands-on work in a supportive environment and it was a really good fit for me.
