As an honest review, Techmation is a decent company to work for overall.

Having worked for various of the "typical" industrial electrical and instrumentation companies, there are similarities and differences, with some better and some worse in comparison to others.

The work overall is very similar compared to the others. There is opportunity for industrial construction pretty much everywhere, where maintenance work is a little more sparse. If you enjoy working construction then you will always have opportunity to work, if you are willing to travel around for it.

Wage wise is comparable to everyone else on the board. Unfortunately in the last few years, the entire industry has taken a hit, so us as workers yes are the ones paying for it. It is unfortunate the pay has decreased several dollars an hour in comparison to what it was years ago, however, if you are willing to put in time, and prove that you are a good worker, there is always opportunity to achieve more with more responsibility. Whether or not this is something you want to do is completely up to the worker. If you would rather just put your head down and work, then the wage is 'ok'.

Depending on your location, your work shifts and hours will vary. If you are willing to work longer shifts and chase the work, you have an opportunity to make very good money. Yes you will work many hours in order to achieve this, but, the opportunity is still there. If you are looking for more of a well-rounded lifestyle work shift, that opportunity is there, which is sometimes more important for a family orientated worker.

Management will vary from shop to shop. In my own experience, I have dealt with a few southern region & the southern regional. They are all very professional, and will always treat you as a person and try to cater to your wants and needs as an employee. They will do their best to keep you happy and working with whatever task you are most comfortable with, or if you needs change they are always there to help. At no other company have I received a phone call from a regional manager personally to make sure I was not sitting for two weeks and to keep me busy by offering to send me to another shop temporarily to keep the income coming in.

Days vary. Jobs vary. Tasks vary. Attitudes vary. Its all typical in our line of work. Do not be lead astray from not taking an opportunity to work for this company if the option is there. Take everything you can learn, positive and negative to better yourself to make your own personal decision on your experience.

Techmation is a company that has some notoriety among electrical workers, but my experience there was pretty good. The pay and hours are fair, but not always extremely good. It depends on the project. Bid jobs can be rushed, and are typically late due to under-bidding as is common in the industry. However, I have to say that the management and coworkers in the Acheson and Fort Sask shops are quite good. They are approachable and are helpful. There is low competitiveness among them.

The main benefit is that even though the wage is not the highest (it is still competitive enough), it is extremely stable. Even in tough times, there are projects, and if not, there are many shops that can take you on when your's isn't busy. That's not common though as the bidding department is working nonstop. Those who are good in their work (industrial construction) don't get laid off, and are greatly rewarded with unparalleled job stability. The work is usually in oil and gas. It ranges from larger construction projects (time and material or bid jobs), to small skid buildings, and occasionally service calls.

It is good to know that should I ever be out of work, Techmation will probably have a place for me to come back to, and I would go back. The guys I worked with on multiple projects are fantastic pretty much across the board, too.

The main downside is that tightly bid jobs can be stressful, but as a worker who isn't a foreman, that stress is usually kept above your head as it ought to be.

Worked at this compnay for a couple years and found that managment was constantly changing there minds with work. They wouldnt notified you until after 6pm at night. Also for the 1st and 2nd years starting out, the knowledge you will be learning is how to mop floors and how to clean trailers. Out of the lloydminster shop they dont have many mentors to learn from because you are floating around jmen. I personally would not recommend this company and there wages are significantly lower then any other electrical company, hence why they have lots of work. If you want to learn how to constantly cut strut, tray and clean trailers then it would be the job for you. But if you don't want to learn how to terminate or read prints and be valued as an employee wait the couple weeks and applied somewhere else. During your probation period for 3 months with this compnay no matter the year, they will start you out at 18-19 a hour till you are past the 3 months for cheap labour's.
I tired to be as honest and truthful I could, this isn't one person's experience this is many that has worked for the company and shop to shop the experience isn't better.

I had worked for many Electrical & Instrumentation service companies prior to working for Techmation. Majority of them do not follow through what they had promised in the hiring stage. Needless to say, management at these companies see their employees as just tools and can be easily replaced when worn out or broken. Profit and bottom line is their one and only priority!

However, at Techmation they value their employees differently. Employees are always treated as an asset; an asset that Techmation believes in investing to promote growth and succession planning.  I have been with Techmation for over 10 years. I first started as an Instrumentation Tech servicing field equipment and controls. Through Techmation's encouragement, training and investment in me, I now hold a second trade ticket and am part of their Project's Team. Little did I know that when I made this move more than 10 years ago, I would be applying to be part of a big caring family.

Worst company to work for, when I first started at techmation I liked them and learned a lot... then I started to realize that I was just a number and no matter how hard I worked, they did not care, they did not pay for travel and they only paid time and a half and after working a 14 hour day out -30 when we would go back to the shop, batteries would freeze up and vehicles would not start, we couldn’t even plug them in as management would make a huge deal about it. They have no respect for people who work hard for that company. I will not recommend anyone to work for this company. They also blacklist you If you leave to go work for another company with a better wage. Drive everyone elses wages down so they can get all the work meanwhile everyone’s busting their behinds to make a couple dollars. It’s because of people like them who drive our wages way down. You have to watch out for snitches. Everyone’s always trying to climb up the ladder to prove something to someone and they’ll take anyone down to climb up it. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Lots of trucks, generally don’t need to commute with personal vehicle. Easy to stand out as they have a young, inexperienced workforce.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Working with inexperienced, immature, unprofessional workers and management. Too many young guys trying to make a name for themselves without experienced workers to balance it out. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Quantity over quality mindset. Management will say things like “okay and fast is better than great and slow”. If you are looking to build good habits and learn how to do high quality installations, this is not the right company for you. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Long drives out to remote sites are possible. Wondering who’s in charge is common. Yelling and chaos during team work is commonplace.

Overall, for what this field of work entails, it is a decent company to work for. I did enjoy some of my time with this company (and hated some of it as well). If you are looking to advance/rank up for this company, it is all about who you know and upper mgmnts personal opinion of you. All the upper level people know each other from way back, it is almost like you have to break into their little social circle to be noticed in any way. If you are a good worker there is usually no shortage of work which is good, sometimes almost too much. They will sometimes request you to work on your scheduled days off, and if you decline you will be at the bottom of the list next time regarding manning up for jobs.

Terrible big company mentality where the bottom line takes presidence over the employees who make profit for them. During slower times due to lower resource prices they chose to slash rates in an attempt to rapidly expand. Except you get what you pay for, and the quality workers that had the positions that they hostiley procured didn’t stay long, or didn’t move over at all. That’s why there’s the constant barrage of employee wanted ads. The have lots of work that requires highly skilled technicians, but they don’t offer even close to an acceptable wage to attract them. At least in other trades management stands up for the worth of their workers and would never slash rates. As it’s a complete insult that ultimately dumbs down the two trades that should and once required and attracted highly intelligent people.

Show up early at work have a morning meeting, to talk about the work contracts for the day, and what I would be doing. 

I learned about the different kinds of oilfield sites, equipment, and situations you would be in. How to meter prove, read different weekly reports of flow and equipment, and other oilfield tasks that you would have to do in the workforce.

The management was nice and understanding, tried to include me in the everyday work that went on, still being in school at the time.

Co-workers were oilfield workers so some days were more crude than others

The long days of work were tiring, some of the time having to work twelve hour days.

Learning a lot about the oilfield and I was able to put some of the concepts I learnt about to use.

I really value working at a company where we’ve got each other’s backs and work well as a team. My coworkers are hardworking, and we help each other get the job done. Senior management is there when we need support, and they make it easy to reach out when we’re facing a tough situation. Our president and vice president show real loyalty to the team, which gives us confidence in the direction we’re heading. I also appreciate the freedom I have to handle my responsibilities without being micromanaged. Being trusted to get my work done my way keeps me motivated and lets me focus on what’s important. Altogether, it’s a place where I feel respected and valued, and that makes a big difference in the way I show up each day.
