Telesat

On paper the project is highly interesting for a long list of reasons. Unfortunately, management on both technical and human levels is chaotic and remarkably unhealthy.

Many of engineering upper managers joined the project early, and came with people they worked with before, that they trust as mid managers, product owners, ... They are knowledgeable in satcom industry, and probably the best. 
However, technically, the chaos settled down very early, just got worse with time, and everything looks like things will be sporty with the upcoming deadlines.

Design decisions are taken and changed frequently by privileged trusted people, without clear specifications, and often beyond their own fields of expertise.
Not much coordination between them, despite the tremendous amount of meetings and ceremonies. Which means things can break or change anytime, without a clear process.

A steep waterfall model, disguised in heavy agile.

Of course, broken processes symptoms were reported by many to mid and upper management. But here where comes the human poor management part.

Upper management is not willing to hear any of that. Like if they take it personally. You can talk to a mid or up manager genuinely, who would thank you for bringing that up. The following day s/he would simply ghost you!
Then, you might be questioned for something you're the first to report as broken, or they would simply deny your arguments and your work all together.

They do not have any restraint using an obvious passive-aggressive tone, with their managees in a meeting, a group chat or a one on one... Without being given the opportunity to share your point of view, or whether the blame is legit in the first place.

Upper management is praising the cohesiveness and "alignment", and act like Divas. Not ready to hear any feedback on broken processes, let alone expensive technical consequences of their own poor choices.
Mid management is simply enforcing whatever they are told, regardless whether it is viable or not, fair or not...

Every morning, you should expect something might be broken under the hood, or some manager (not necessarily yours!!) would blame you for something.

The long hiring process is not worth what you get. 
This place is technically disorganized and humanly toxic.

The work environment is stressful and highly competitive however not in the manner one might think. I find colleagues deliberately creating a stressful and unwelcome environment for their co-workers. It appears as something enjoyed, making others feel beneath them or incompetent. 
The overall conduct and environment throughout the organization is contrived to make a new employee feel welcome though shortly thereafter that mask slips and the true corporate persona is shown. This has caused numerous employees to leave whether they be long timers or new hires. All the while the same behavior plods on uninterrupted. 

Any attempt at voicing your opinion or grievance is ignored or challenged until you are made out to be the cause. One can expect to be terminated at some point thereafter or your presence there forces you into leaving. 
I can write this with authority and confidence as I have been dealing with it  a number of years. At some point in time you make a decision, leave or remain and develop coping mechanisms to protect yourself from the demoralizing, belittling, at times downright cruel treatment that will be heaped upon you coupled with the fear of speaking with others on a casual basis as you are aware this is only to glean information from you that will later be used against you. Telesat espouses moving ahead into the future however the internal environment which desperately needs to be looked at will remain in place as it has for decades.

•	Prepared variance reports comparing to budgets and prior periods and analysed the revenue by product and sale group for senior management decision making purpose.
•	Prepared consolidated financial statements for Telesat Group of companies.
•	Performed the month end duties; prepared adjustment entries and general ledger reconciliations.
•	Reconciled the intercompany balances monthly basis and prepared intercompany journal entries in multiple currencies. 
•	Ensured the revenue accounting activities are compliance to SOX guidelines to meet the internal control requirements. 
•	Recognised revenue for new projects using IFRS and prepared deferred revenue schedules to straight line the revenue.
•	Prepared and filled CRTC levy reports and recoded the levy expenses in the financial statements.
•	Prepared embedded derivative schedules for US GAAP reconciliations.
•	Successfully managed the transition in to the role with minimal training.

•	Met the month end deadlines; prepared adjustment entries and general ledger reconciliations.
•	Posted the journal entry batches created by AP and AR Clerks.
•	Responsible for the intercompany consolidations for Telesat group of companies (25 companies).
•	Reconciled the intercompany balances monthly basis and prepared intercompany journal entries in multiple currencies.
•	Analysed and prepared variance reports comparing the budget to actual and prior periods for senior management’s decision making purpose.
•	Ensured the revenue accounting activities are compliance to SOX guidelines to meet the internal control requirements. 
•	Recognised revenue for the new projects using IFRS and prepared revenue adjustment schedules.

When I first started working at Telesat it was great, all kinds of benefits, they were actually paying for my university degree at one time.  They the company was sold to investors, which has really lowered the moral at this company.  There is no longer an promotions or advancement, benefits have been cut back.  However Telesat still does offer a pension and RRSP matching, so there are still a few good things left at this company, however I don't see myself going anywhere within this structure, it makes me sad because the company does have a lot of interesting components.  It's unfortunate that they have no policies in place for training or advancement within the company.

Corporate IT services and support is the worst! The moment they have a project cancelled or management get into fight or competition, they start to lay people off or push them to resign by putting them on PIP or insulting them. Staff are also under paid specially management and highly technical staff. HR is very weak in terms of people management and supporting the staff with their employee rights. Environment is super stressful and offensive. They tend to replace people with cheaper new employees to cut costs. HR turnover is to the roof in all levels.

At TD, you walk in to colleagues smiling all over and fun and memorable work days. I learned how to work as a team with my team members and give legendary customer service with some being memorable. I had and still have the opportunity of meeting great people such as our management team that is there when you need them to be and co workers that will make your time at work worthwhile. The hardest part of the job, I would say is not being able to give a customer what they want, but the best part is knowing that you tried your best. This job in so many ways is a blessing to have. Great people, a good salary and amazing benefits.

I enjoyed working at Telesat mainly because of the people. I had great managers when I worked as a console operator and in records management.

The company also had a gym right in the building so it was a great place to work in the day time and I enjoyed the exercise program in the early part of the day.

Management not cooperative with staff leading to confusions and potential risk. Good skills and knowledge on my part avoided a lot of embarrassment, as outages for the entire network when a baseball game was being covered

Working on the ANIK C satellite system as a satellite payload engineer gave me great software programming experience. Specifically working on Satellite wave tube technology, the central system in the satellite
