Telus-World-of-Science---Edmonton

Having worked there as part of the management team  - I was privy to what went on behind closed doors and in the board room.
 
This is just my experience and what I saw and felt by working in this environment.

The COO to put it politely was not capable of doing their role. It was more about blaming others, using vulgar language to intimidate or create fear not really sure. This person would send pictures of nude women to others through email (and yes this is mostly a children's facility). The picture was of a woman being topless and displaying for a specific person. He would use abbreviations like RFN - which would mean right @*#& now.  Basic business concepts had to be explained to this person. Although, to be fair they were just doing their best. How many times do we see incompetent men in executive positions and it is just their skill of manipulation and maybe there use of bullying tactics and other non-business skills to hold their position? The HR department knew about this behaviour and would just shrug their shoulders. When the executives would yell, scream, berated and embarrass employees in front of others the HR department would say nothing, do nothing and see nothing - just to save their roles. The CEO was part of the problem as well - the COO just emulated the bad behaviours of the CEO. Even if the CEO has changed - you still have the COO who gets away with being an empty shell inside & outside. 

No, am not an angry bitter person. I was glad to leave as I believe people deserve better. Why would I be angry? If you are not valued and in a position where there is some measurable growth and you are having some fun you need to move on as those attributes should be the default. I have met more incompetent & toxic executives (VP's and up) then bad employees.  But these companies and executives who are incompetent in their roles and lack basic business skills, human skills and honesty and some moral integrity to their repertoire are hiding in plain sight and should be called out. Although for some reason they continue on in their roles without any penalty for their incompetence or abusive behaviours. 

This is just what I saw when I was there.

I was happy to work at Telus World of Science, and it allowed me to use my degree to teach the public about astronomy and physics. It was a lot of fun, and I wish I could still be working there. However, there are issues with advancement or becoming full time. When you start, you are on a short term contract, which can be renewable if they wish to rehire you for an exhibit. Unfortunately, I had an issue with a position that was described as ongoing, but they later told me was a very short term position between exhibits. After a talk with the union, they recommended a meeting with HR, which has resulted in them never responding to my application despite my qualifications and previous success in the position. HR and upper management seem to be out of touch with their employees.

I really enjoyed working with my co-workers and all the different things I was able to see when I was there. You get to meet lots of different people from around the world and watch some great IMAX shows. As with any customer based business there are times when it will be really busy and other times it might be slow so be prepared to do odd jobs that might not be in your job description at both peak times.  

If you take transit it might be a little out of your way as most ETS buses do not have a direct route.

As you can see from my enclosed resume, I am currently attending high school, but I had my first and amazing experience working with kids! I did everything in Science World; opening/setting up, face painting, reading stories, arts and crafts, building towers, gardening, feeding/taking care of the animals, cleaning up, locking up at closing etc. The hardest part of this job was leaving after I completed my 80 hours.

If you want to work with great people and for a great cause this is the place to be. However, be prepared for lack of management support and uncertainties with hours and job security for part-time staff. 

Innovation and efficiency is not always recognized.

Favoritism plays key roles for advancements.

Diversity does not exist in management.

Integrity does not seem to matter when it comes to the fast pace of front of house. Management unaware of difficulty with staff. When try to alert them, I was "cut off at the pass". Not able to get attention of upper management.

Super unique and fun place to work. Lots of opportunities to explore the exhibits and see the films so you know what you are selling. Can be high stress when there is a large exhibit and a lot of people, but a good work environment overall.

It was an AMAZING time and I made some amazing friends.
The galleries are so great that you never get bored. 
There's always change so you are always learning something new. 
At the end, the towers show is my favorite!

I loved my time working at TWOSE. Though it is fast-paced and stressful place when busy, the staff and management were kind, compassionate and truly care about you as a person. This was a wonderful experience for me.

Good part time, fun and different than any other student job. Tasks are changed every hour or so so the job doesn't get boring and repetitive. Not a whole lot of room to move up but there are always hours available.
