First of all, I would give this company no star at all if I had the option to do so.  One of the biggest problem here is nepotism and this problem is extremely pertinent in the Production, Operation, Engineering and Human resources department.  Normally, even if friends of high management are hired as subordinates, this does not warrant any detrimental effects to the business EXCEPT when these management and their friends are incompetent, with very few (if any) applicable or even transferable skill sets from their previous work experience.  Adding to this, these people ensure their friends and themselves are well compensated in term of salaries and stock options; and when they could not perform most of their duties or give any meaningful guidance, advice, technical support and knowhow etc, they would created lower positions and hire others to do the work for them.  Even though employees in these lower positions perform their jobs well and work diligently, they are kept with poor pay , no recognition and zero chance of promotion, while their "superiors" possess title like manager, senior manager or director and the friends that hired them are VPs.  This created tremendous discontent among most (if not all) workers/employees as they could see their work and the contribution are not rewarded and the only rewards are given to certain managers, senior managers, directors and VPs (and their friends) in the form of high salary, guaranteed continued employment in times of cutback and restructuring and most damagingly to the entire company: complete immunity to any form of discipline regardless of how little values they brought to the table other than smooth talking with big words in management meetings or talk with CEO/COO.   All these high management from different departments have no oversight as the former CEO is clueless how to govern.

As a result, the effects of incompetent high management showed up over the past years in the form of:  bad business deals, inappropriate or outright wrong production equipment being purchased and returned multiple times, long delay of production machine installation, wrong business plans, constructions of unused facilities,  poor qualities product, high customer complaints, inventory of key raw material not monitored before production runs or launch, hiring of underqualified personnel, promotion of such personnel within months, legitimate complaints to HR not handled properly and down right dirty office politics.

If you're looking for a challenge, then challenges are what you'll find.

Management shows more interest in hitting milestones and making big splashes ($$$) than actually running a smooth manufacturing operation. Little attention is paid to product quality, organizational planning is weak, communication is poor in all directions, and inter-department drama is frequent. The result is an overall culture rooted in recklessness, disdain for procedure, and a lack of consideration for workers.

A general lack of respect for work-life balance can also be expected. Last-minute scheduling changes are frequent, and being pressured into staying late without warning is a common occurrence. There have been numerous instances of workers being shamed and bullied for booking time off, and little respect is given to home life (an example of this being the pervasive expectation for workers to take work-related calls outside of office hours).

Little care is given to career advancement, with some of the longest tenured, hardest working employees getting nothing in return for their service. Showing initiative and working longer hours does not get rewarded, and is instead viewed as an invitation for further exploitation.

As for upsides, health and dental coverage is quite comprehensive, and there is a general sense of camaraderie among the lower-tier workers over the shared hardship. Beyond that, I would struggle to find any other positives to note about the company.

Unless management is willing to take a hard look in the mirror and make some serious structural changes, they'll find themselves struggling to retain talent.

This company does not care for their employees. The HR does not take any actions for workplace bullying. There is bullying and miscommunication/no communication all over the company and especially in the Quality department. The Quality director is the worst ever person to work with. The quality director works like a ruler. Nobody can say a word against the employees that the Quality Director likes. Only people who are liked by the Quality Director get appreciated for their work; no matter if another employee is more hardworking or deserving. This is not a place to suggest new ideas or to expect to get appreciated for your work. This is a place where you will be yelled at, bullied and disrespected. You will be sent into meetings for which you have no background or information. The Quality Department will never be strong with the current Quality Director. Everything is going to be back dated and pending in the current situation. All the very best if you are planning to even go near this company.

Although only a short time into my employment TerrAscend, I can honestly it has been truly thrilling so far. This industry, the product and the future of it all fascinates me!

The people are great, and everyone is supportive.

A typical day at work is never typical. You may have a plan for your day, but it changes with the snap of your fingers! However, that is what I expected for a young company in a young industry.

In addition to being young and trying to implement processes and even a culture, the company must also adapt and grow with the always changing industry. It can be overwhelming for some.

As for me, I thrive in this fast paced and building/ growth type of environment because I am very resourceful, highly organized and I like to make my own impact and footprint. People who require constant hand-holding have not, and will not survive.

Overall company intentions are good, however management has no respect for personal life balances. Absolutely no sense of organization and management expect employees to be available at all times. A lot of pushiness towards running overtime. A lot of management and people in the offices don't know much about Cannabis and its original culture, not much career growth for someone who starts at the bottom even if they know from seed to sale. A lot of favouritism in the workplace and not much understanding between management and employees. Scheduling for employees is unreliable. Although if someone applied for a certain shift their schedule would be changing into other shifts and management has 0 respect for the change in lives they do with the timing of employees shifts without asking them. If you're looking for growth and stability with time and money, this isn't a place to put your efforts in, they tend to play with money & time with employees.

A typical day at work would include having your daily plan changed based on a multitude of poorly managed issues and events. The lunch room would be divided based on which group you belonged to. Witness executives arguing with managers.

I learned that a companies culture is defined from the top down

Management used high school politics and was unable to provide anyone with proper direction

Workplace culture was the worst I can imagine a work place being, without trying to sound unprofessional, it was as close to Game of Thrones as real life can get. Scheming and backstabbing seemed to be encouraged.

The hardest part of the job was feeling the culture of the building suck the passion from within me

The most enjoyable part was being in contact with the plants every day, however it got to the point where not even that was enough to keep me sane

It's an okay place to learn as you are exposed to more than usual, given that the company is rather young however, upper management is the worse. They don't know how to manage their employees, they don't know how to appreciate their employees, the lack of respect is absurd. If you want to feel unappreciative and undervalued then this is the place to be. Otherwise, best to avoid. 

They don't have a company culture set in place either. You have to deal with everything on your own; don't expect upper management or management in general, to help you when you're in a situation. You will most likely just get yelled at instead. It's a very unorganized company; no proper processes set in place. I don't think they plan on changing that anytime soon.

My experience at Terrascend was great. The pay and benefits are decent, and most of my coworkers were great. The only thing that really irked a lot of my coworkers and I were upper management; our individual department managers were great, but when it came to office and upper management, they seemed very biased and displayed favoritism. Upper management doesn't take constructive criticism well, and when some of my coworkers complained to HR about how poorly they are treated, nothing is done. Some were even "laid off" (fired) for it, and department managers were also targeted. Also, it seems some of the upper management do not know much about cannabis products and/or the cannabis industry.

Sexism, racism, HR doesn't do anything for you. Temporary foreign workers are taken advantage of because they won't hire Canadians. The pay is terrible for the work they ask of you. Stock options are dangled in front of you but you will be fired for looking at someone wrong. Managers are unqualified and don't even understand the culture. If you don't drink the Kool Aid you will be shunned. If you bring up issues you will be fired. There is a divide between the office and greenhouse. The office staff are snobby towards the greenhouse staff, the people making sure the plants are healthy so they get paid... It's honestly a joke of a company. They can't even keep materials on site to do the work needed.

A company full of dirty politics, wasteful, generous to their favorites and extremely incompetent management from HR, Engineering, Production, Operations, Inventory, Finance, Business Development and the list goes on. Favoritism is rampant (promotion with title of manager or senior manager at minimum after a few months), yet poor pay and no reward to good employees, but excellent compensation to incompetent Managers, VPs, BOD and CEO; all have no oversight but talk big in meetings but no solid record of accomplishments. Long useless meeting and relying on knowledgeable, hardworking employees to do the work for them.
