The Berkeley Retirement Residences

After working here for over a year now I have found that the priorities of management changed. I was first hired not because of my professional experience, but with my experience with the elderly, dementia and special needs. This made sense as the job is relatively straight forward and does not require any real job experience to succeed. However early this year, hr hired four more people in my department, making it very hard to get shifts and my regular hours. These coworkers are nice, however I've noticed the hiring tactics must've changed as all of them didn't have any experience with the elderly, so their conduct while working is not always correct. For instance, these staff will speak to many residents in a patronizing tone, purely because they do not have the background to realize that is not necessary, or wanted. Because of the lack of hours I have been getting I've been searching for another part time job. Although I've just been informed that I cannot use any of my coworkers or supervisors as references, as it is against 'company policy', which I find ridiculous and incredibly manipulative, especially because I won't even be leaving this position if I get another job.

I had an awful experience working here. Constantly understaffed and forced to stay long hours after not being adequately trained. Management was condescending and rude or totally absent. Intimidation until you agreed to work more shifts. Part time employees working over 60 hours a week. Residents not properly cared for due to staff constantly quitting and not showing up for shifts. Vacations always denied or they “lost” requests. Work load expectation absurd when there’s a 13 resident to care worker ratio. Also, nothing comes free from the company and you have to purchase meals which comes off already very low pay. No staff are happy and the environment is very negative. Terrible place to work.

I started working at the Berkeley Bedford 2 years ago and I absolutely LOVE my job!!! 
The Berkeley is like no job I've ever had before, it honestly don't even feel like a "job" between the residents and staff you are always laughing and having a good time!!! 
The management care for their staff and are always showing ways for their appreciation towards their staff and all their hard work. 

After working through all the crazy lockdowns this year... the Berkeley always took all measurements to insure the residents and staff were always safe. I had complete trust in them and all their hard decisions. 

I highly recommend working for the Berkeley, if you're lucky enough to have the opportunity to join the team.... Take it!!!!

Staff was friendly and very helpfull.  No consistency. The time the shift starts and ends a different time on almost a weekly basis, and no one informs you. I was good enough to work there when they were stuck and felt pushed put the door afterwards for no reason. I completed all courses and was told by a letter in the mail that I did not meet the standards of the probationary period and move along pretty much. So much for a good working environment. Little or no communication. That's pretty upsetting. Residents and staff liked me I felt I was doing my job so there is no job security here and not enough pay or hours which lead me to look for more hours.

Working In the food industry can take its toll on a person. The relaxed yet fast paced environment encourages you to make delicious homemade food for the residents who love seeing you and chatting with you. At the end of the day it's all about them. 
The team work is amazing, everyone helps each other when someone needs it and with a positive attitude, you may cook alone at times but your never actually alone. Paid stat holidays, vacation time, sick time and paid breaks are great too.
Perfect job for someone who still loves cooking but needs a break from restaurants or hotels.
Reliable hours, working hours are 7-7, will never "close" due to unforeseen events.

The staff team here is absolutely amazing. They're all extremely supportive, understanding, and just generally very friendly. They make you feel very comfortable and welcome, and you'll find yourself sharing lots of laughs with them.

Hardest part of the job is when a resident may get upset with you, however I believe it is important to understand their point of view, and it's honestly not so bad if you're good with people. The residents are super sweet and in general you'll find they're very relaxed and caring people.

Working here was a nightmare. This company will refuse care to their residents if they cannot afford to pay for one simple hour of care. They will pick and choose the ones they like to give free care to. They have horrible communication and set up their employees for failure. The management will talk nicely to your face and then horribly behind your back with other employees. Oh, and they will fire you if you miss one shift due to personal reasons. Horrible, horrible place to work.. wouldn't recommend to my WORST enemy.

A day at work is busy but enjoyable. The best part of the job is interaction with the residents. The management does not support their employees and are constantly observing looking for mistakes but very rarely do they give you a pat on the back. It seems like employees are at each others backs and no team work is involved. I was junior management in another job and this business is very poorly managed. They also discourage interaction with the residents.

Typical day at work would be to visit with clients, and help them with activities of daily living, serving meal trays, and assisting with the individual needs of the clients. Most enjoyable part of the job was going to work with friendly and helpful co-workers, and helping the clients. Hardest part of the job was the fluctuation of hours, and the short shifts. 

The Berkeley is an excellent place to work. 
Everyone, no matter what department they are in, comes together to help one another.
They offer ongoing training, and are very flexible when time off is needed.
The only negative there is to working with The Berkeley is the rate of pay, it is not up to industry standard.
