I worked here for a short period of time, and unfortunately it was not a positive experience. What stood out most was the lack of team culture within the recreation department. It often felt isolating, with limited collaboration or support between staff.

One of the biggest challenges was the lack of training and guidance within the recreation department. Many recreation aides come into the role without formal recreation certifications, and while that’s  okay, there is very little structure in place to support learning. New staff are quickly expected to run programs and generate ideas without clear direction on how to create meaningful, resident-centered activities.

There is also a strong expectation to contribute ideas in meetings (from rec manager) without much mentorship and negative feedback. While feedback from staff is often encouraged, it does not always appear to translate into meaningful changes, which can feel discouraging over time.

Support from recreation management can feel limited at times, with communication that may come across as passive-aggressive rather than constructive. This can make it difficult for staff to feel confident and valued in their role. At times, it creates an environment where speaking up doesn’t always feel comfortable.

There appears to be a high turnover rate, particularly within the recreation team, which is unfortunate. Consistency is so important in building relationships with residents, and frequent staff changes can impact their experience and sense of connection.

Overall, this role has a lot of potential, especially given the importance of recreation in resident's quality of life. With stronger leadership, better training, and more supportive team dynamics within recreation, it could be a much more positive environment for both staff and residents. 

As a final note to ownership and upper management, there appears to be a consistent pattern of high turnover within the recreation team, which may be worth examining more closely to identify underlying causes. Investing in experienced recreational therapist as the leader or certified professionals who are well-supported in their role could help create a more stable and positive environment for both staff and residents.

I have been at the Gardens for almost 2 years.  Long Term Care is always evolving, to ensure that best practices and optimal care is provided to residents.  This means that we continue to experience change and that can be sometimes difficult and stressful.  Despite this, I have seen a positive shift in our safety culture and our care delivery culture.  We have been challenged with staffing, as many health care sites have been over the pandemic.  Recruitment has been and remains a top priority for this organization.  There are always areas that can be improved in any organization, and as we work towards Accreditation, these areas will be highlighted, reviewed, and addressed.  I enjoy working at the Gardens, because the staff make a difference in the lives of the residents.  The staff works hard and they work together.  Our residents require and deserve the fullest attention to care that we can provide.  The ownership at the Gardens recognizes staff contribution and supports staff through opportunities of Professional Growth.  No, things are not what they used to be.  But should they be?  The health care field is ever evolving and we must always look for better ways to improve or adjust our care delivery to meet the individual needs of each resident.   If you want to be a part of making a true difference, this is where you will want to be.  I am proud to say I work here.  

I worked at PGH as a recreation aide for a total of 2 months and within that period nearly the entire recreation department (5, including myself) quit due to the recreation manager. The manager of this department is unsupportive, controlling, and condescending. I have never been so stressed out at a job in my life. 

As a rec aide, we were never given the tools to succeed - minimal supplies (even after multiple requests for replenishment), no help with any programs, often rejection to any proposed program ideas, and no preparation time to create quality programs. She was mostly concerned with the amount of residents that attended the programs and how it looked on point click care rather than the quality of program created for the enjoyment of the residents. 

However, I will say that I loved the rest of my team, and though we were unsupported by our manager, we worked together to support each other and I learned a lot from them. I also cared a lot for the residents and appreciated the care staff as they were always kind and helpful. 



From the beginning it is easy to see that this company is only caring for the elderly for profit gains. They do not truly care for overall health and wellbeing of the residents. They hide the poor work culture by putting themselves on a pedestal acting as if they are better than health authorities. Hiding behind these renovated mansions to make it seem to the public they are putting the utmost care and attention to residents. The owner mother and son do not have a clue and should resign and let the health authorities run the Long-term care homes the proper and correct manner. Highly disorganized, poor work ethics, communication, and for profit from the company owners are their mission, values, and beliefs. I was blind-sided by the beautiful renovated mansion but as they say "Do not judge a book by its cover." And this is certainly the case for this company!  Never apply for a private for profit company such as TCG you will only deeply regret it! 

Point Grey Private Hospital is the worst place I have ever worked at in my life. The rec manager at PGH is incredibly condescending, disrespectful and rude. She has no respect for the rec aides and doesn’t foster a welcoming or supportive work environment. It is extremely clear that she does not know how to be a good manager or how to work with others, and it is very apparent that the company will not do anything about it. 
A good manager has strong communication, empathy, organizational skills and accountability.  She demonstrates none of these abilities. She does not empower or motivate her team to grow, provide consistent support, nor does she create a safe space for communication or trust. 
She constantly places blame on others for mistakes she made to make herself favourable with residents and families. There is high turnover in recreation due to the manager’s inability to be a kind person. 
I highly recommend not applying here as a recreation aide. They will not respect you, they will not support you, and they will not care about you. 


Facility is modern and spotless, they do hire nice staff that work very hard in all departments. However there’s No work culture, or HR/communication structure exist for residents, families and staff to give feedback on living or working there. When I asked or agree to work over time was not rewarded overtime pay, and other departments report same experience - management defends “because not unionized”. Regard for resident satisfaction varies. It is well seen and known here if you know the owner you benefit. Turnover is high because respect not given to positions thought lower than upper management, again communication network a huge deficit and many staff share they feel ideas are disregarded or rejected even when client centred.  Really just a top down managed business rather than client centred care home. 

The absolute worse place on Earth to be employed. 
  You also best have a "clear understanding that:" your loved ones AND the seniors in your community are the money making product to the company owners achieved by the General manager and the DOC must comply with management's abusive and bullying & harassment demands to their staff or they too are fired. 
 It is a sad toxic environment to work in and you will NOT get paid enough in this lifetime for the incomplete unattainable chaotic expectations of you.
 Managment will be the first to critic you and point out everything you don't do properly or achieve without offering a solution and never commend for all the over and above that you unconditionally do*without being asked*. 
  If you are an independent, intoverted, gossiper with no interpersonal skills or genuine compassion for others; then you should apply here today because this IS the job and place for you and you WILL excel.

I thoroughly enjoyed caring for the residents in this facility, and that was the primary reason for my tenure there. However, the company seemingly has gained a notorious reputation for providing zero support to care aides, who essentially shoulder all the responsibilities and operations of the facility. Fortunately, I had a great group of hardworking colleagues -- the care aides and some nurses on my unit specifically. The company is fortunate to have such hardworking employees, however many of them are only motivated by the promise of immigration support (which is not guaranteed) rather than genuine passion for the job. Residents frequently express dissatisfaction with the food quality and management. This facility prioritizes its outward appearance over core principles of senior care. I'm relieved to have moved on.

This used to be a happy place. Employees enjoyed their jobs, residents were entertained and listened to. The new owners have, just like their other assisted /long term care facilities on the mainland, run this place into the ground. Everyone, employees and residents are miserable. The owners don't consult anyone when they make changes. New institutional white paint no one asked for, new carpet no one asked for or needed. Key members of the company have been fired or more often than not, forced to leave. And in many cases, not replaced. Currently working with local news agencies to expose this place for what it is. This is exactly what profit over people has become in our day and age. The Gardens, thanks to the new owners, has become nothing more than an institution, where nobody has a say other than the owners. 

Management in the support service department needs improvement. There is favoritism, and decisions are often unfair. Relatives of the manager were hired and given positions right away, which caused frustration among staff. Some employees felt forced to resign, especially when they wanted to take vacation.

The manager is not professional when dealing with employees. Personal issues are sometimes shared with other staff, which causes stress and embarrassment. The work culture feels toxic.

The manager depends on a small group of people she trusts and does not check on other employees. She stays in the office most of the time and does not communicate well with the team.
