The Family Centre

Initially, the supervisors and fellow staff seemed understanding and empathetic. Over time, it became the opposite. Supervisors and staff turn over was frequent. This led to a massive amount of miscommunication and mistakes throughout my time there. Training was inadequate. Supervisors told me to do certain tasks without outlining a correct method. And when tasks were done incorrectly, supervisors would reprimand me. This happened with other front line staff as well. 

The amount of driving and mileage involved is unreasonable. When my personal vehicle began to break down and I couldn't do visits or attend meetings. I was essentially unable to work with virtually no support or alternatives were given from supervisors. 

A toxic work environment was strong here. When concerns and problems between myself and another coworker occurred. I tried to be as reasonable and understanding as I could be. But my fellow coworker was incredibly demeaning and belittled me more than anyone has in any other industry I've worked in. And when I reported their behaviour, I was met with shallow acknowledgement and this coworker's behaviour was never addressed.

Eventually, I was let go without and explanation and I feel like I'm better for it. I've never known such a hypocritical and difficult organization.

Working at The Family Centre as a Social Worker and Family Connector has been one of the most meaningful chapters of my professional life. Supporting children, youth, and families particularly those navigating intergenerational trauma and systemic challenges was not just a job, it was something else. I brought my full self to the role, driven by purpose, compassion, and a deep respect for the diverse communities we served.

My time at TFC wasn’t just about casework. It was about advocacy, connection, and healing. I took pride in being someone families could trust, and someone colleagues could rely on. I was often told I had a calming presence, and I always strived to be a steady source of hope and empowerment for the families walking through some of life’s toughest moments.

The leadership and team environment encouraged growth, and I continuously looked for ways to bring creative, culturally aware, and trauma-informed approaches to our practice. I gave it my all, and looking back, I know I made a lasting impact not only with the clients but within the heart of the organization itself.

This place shaped me. I started my Masters due to them. Thank You Guys.

This used to be a great place to work because I had the belieft I was making a difference and had room for advancement. There was a change in Management and has gone down hill. too much paperwork and numbers focused. minimal room for advancement. If you have any criticism of the way things are, they will find a way to get rid of you. Lack of support for minimal if any job descriptions. They say Trauma informed but do things like have renovations during counselling sessions, and dont take any feedback. Some great people but poor organization in terms of forms and processes. Everything is about process and administration and it takes away from work with clients. Interns are distraught at the amount of paperwork. Its become more about numbers here, and less about clients. Staff are given expectations, but not oriented properly. Many have asked for support and they are quickly fired and cut off from all communication. Trauma informed teaching yet in practice with staff if could be increased. Some lovely people here though, just really need to work on how they treat staff and some organizational hickups.

Working at the family center is a dynamic and rewarding experience that involves diverse tasks, including providing in-home family support, teaching parenting skills, and collaborating with schools and communities. We emphasize the importance of empathy and adaptability, gaining valuable insights into the complexities of family dynamics. The management is supportive, fostering a collaborative environment, and the workplace culture is both inclusive and mission-driven. The most challenging aspect involves addressing deep-seated family issues, while the most enjoyable part is witnessing positive transformations within families and the community. Moments of caregivers building strong support networks, children thriving in their developmental strengths, and communities becoming safer make the job incredibly fulfilling despite its inherent challenges.

I worked as a parent support worker with this agency. 

First of all, you struggle with advancement. They always claim there is opportunity for growth. But they would rather hire someone from outside the agency than people working from within.

There is too much driving involved. I got a flat tire while driving out of town and was told to call ama in the middle of no where.

I was sick and unable to do my duties. Even with a doctors note, I was not given modified duties. I was forced to go on short term disability which was denied.  With no income coming in i was very stressed. Luckily i applied for sick leave through e.i and got some money in.

On the other hand they had lots of opportunities for learning. 

Overall i had a bad experience with the family centre as a parental support worker and felt undervalued.

There are a lot of bullies in this job. The way I was treated was unprofessional and unethical. I have trauma from working there and it is not for a lack of education or experience. I was treated so poorly,  called a liar and told no one likes me by management. Ganged up on in meetings etc. They will centre you out and not respect your honest and good hearted input into the job you are working hard at. It’s a fast paced and challenging role. Management do not fully understand your role because they do not do your job, have different agenda, and with constant changes and turn over, this misunderstanding and disconnect becomes detrimental to building supportive and trusting collaboration. I will never forget how this organization made me feel. They should be ashamed. 

As a success coach, my supervisor and manager were wonderful. They were always very supportive of me and my well-being and were always just a phone call away if I needed them. I absolutely loved my job as a success coach and working with children in a school setting. I will say, for what you are dealing with though, I think it should be higher pay. You deal with a lot of crisis and the pay isn’t great, however the benefits are pretty good. I didn’t feel a whole lot of room for advancement due to not wanting to be a supervisor, but the role itself was a good one to be in. Overall, I really loved this role and the company.

How hard you work doesn't matter, how well you network does. While the hardworking frontline does amazing work, management is another story. There are supervisors supervising one person. Managers managing two people. The organization is so top heavy, I can't believe the board allows it. Three frontline salaries could be paid from one management salary. If you are able to turn a blind eye to the corruption, you will do well. If you see behind the curtain, and management knows you saw, you'll be summarily dismissed without warning. If you want to do well, be blind, deaf and mute. You don't even have to work that hard. Unless you're frontline. Then you'll carry The Family Centre on your back. 

They are an agency that helps families become strong and they have an employee wellness program however I was a long term employee and that was not encouraged or supported during a difficult period. They did not offer help or assistance as I would expect an employer to, instead they terminated without cause resulting in the loss of my benefits and financial hardships and many more hardships followed. Other employees in my program were unhappy and this negativity showed through in their work especially during shift exchange.

If you get a position here you'll find that your Department has more than likely undergone a recent change (happens often) that they will deem as "positive." The changeovers are rampant and you will get sucked in to on call for departments other than your own. The recent changes for on call pay went from $800/mo. To less than a 1/4 of that. The change this created was more work for front line and less work from those above you. You have to pay for your own training. The in house training is really an overview of all programs and half the stuff you would've learned in your own studies. The parking sucks and the Supervisors are not interested in your mental well being. Good luck if you apply here.
