The Hamlets at Westsyde

The management at the Hamlets was not supportive of the staff. They used bullying, intimidation, and dishonesty to control thier staff. None of the administration had either a medical or nursing background and therefore were unable to understand many of the issues that needed to be dealt with. Making money seemed to be thier primary goal. Staff moral is impossible to maintain when the staff is facing increased work loads, reduced staffing and reduced wages. Gossip was rampant, in fact some management encouraged staff to gossip about, and report on each other.Some members of the management staff were incompetent at their jobs. They did not follow proper proceedures and at times both staff and residents were unsafe. The rest of the administration made themselves unavailable to requests for assistance or support. This was an example of a toxic work environment,unhealthy for staff, residents and their families. In spite of poor management, the staff remained devoted to best care for their residents. Caring for the elderly requires a special heart and mindset.The care staff ; nurses, care aides, kitchen and housekeeping all rose above the politics on a daily basis . A supportive, appreciative, proffessional administration would have made it so much better and healthier for all concerned.

During my time with this organization, I observed a significant gap between the company’s person-centred care messaging and the realities faced by frontline staff.

Care teams are often responsible for high workloads that include meal service, laundry, and multiple operational tasks in addition to direct care. These competing demands limit the time staff can spend meaningfully present with residents, despite their best intentions.

At the same time, increased expectations placed on leadership has resulted in less clinical and operational support for frontline teams. Concerns raised by staff frequently lacked timely follow-through.

The result is a system that makes it difficult to consistently provide the level of relationship-centred care residents deserve. Stronger structural support for leadership roles, along with appropriate staffing models and clearer role alignment, would improve both staff morale and resident outcomes by allowing managers to be present, accessible, and clinically engaged.

Over-all moral of staff is low. High turn over in every department including management. Its a union run facility but management doesn't follow the contract and isn't held accountable. They will lie about wages and raises just so you will work there. For 10 years of work your wage will increase by only .90 cents. The medical and dental plan is a joke. I had my eye examined and had to get glasses. My bill was $480.00. The plan covered $18.00.
Getting short changed on your pay check happens often so beware. Short staff is a normal thing, so over work and un-safe conditions are common.
Staff try to make it a fun place to work but most are under paid and burnt out from trying to set about positive change which just can't happen there because the owners are in it JUST FOR THE MONEY...THEY DON"T CARE ONE BIT ABOUT STAFF OR THE RESIDENTS.

This is a horrible place to work.  Colleagues don’t have a trouble telling anyone you are not very well liked including transit drivers and they will make the comment so you can hear it. Casuals get treated poorly they are supposed to say when they are available to work and management is supposed to work around it. When they are short staffed management will schedule you and give you no choice. They will even try to schedule you on days they know you are not available. They have qualified people to help them with staffing problems in other departments but won’t ask them to fill in until the person has handed in their resignation and then keep bugging you to come in. After you leave the facility they try to schedule you for a shift and you still get emails until you contact them and ask them to remove you. Management does not care even though they say they do. 

Management takes advantage of hard working staff members expecting them to train new employees and hold others accountable who are at the same level as you. They are constantly short staffed and expect workers to do twice the work or more and do 2 person care alone putting staff and residents at risk. Management avoids meeting with staff members to resolve issues and employees who speak up for their right are often punished. Management all protect each other when they fail to do their job and there is no accountability. Alot of drama and bitterness from staff members. Only work here as a last resort.

This place has really heavy workload. The expectation vs support we got is really unmatched. HCA Staffs there are amazing they really truly care about their residents and actually loved spending time with them, but the burnt out is so real. Management does not support you at all, you get physically assaulted? They dont care, they will ask you what can you do better instead talk to family and find solutions, no extra training for staffs who are new to  the dementia patients, no extra workload support. They just ask you to do more and more each time and NEVER appreciate what you did for the floor. I stayed for awhile because of the coworkers. But this job is really not worth any of your time. You will cry all day all night 

Starting out good then after my 3 months were up, went downhill after that. Jealously, manipulative, rude employees. Management won’t care if you get injured at work, even after getting a doctors note, they still want you to work. For night shifts, 160+ residents for 5 care aides and if your lucky, 2 nurses. The majority of the time you get one nurse for the whole building. And that’s only for the residential side. Students or new care aides, they will treat you like trash, and won’t show anything properly. 

It's a revolving door for a reason. The new owners are not hands on at all. They'll make you feel like you're part of a team that wants success and then they'll screw you over. Lots of gossip and people talking behind your back. Don't do anything that isn't in your job description because you will be taken advantage of 100%. The new GM is a lovely  man though and trying his best to fix the mess that is the Hamlets. Maybe one day it'll be a nice place to work because of him.

The owners make promises and say they want to develop staff already employed, but the truth is they keep loading on work to the staff until they burn out. The owners certainly like boasting about big vacations but can only afford a ten cent raise for the employees. The owners are not accountable for their own actions and can't even follow the professional work ethic and policies they lay out for the employees. The owners are sneaky!

They have a hard time keeping staff. Management acts like they care and make the job sound amazing but it is not. They will work you till you burn out if you let them. They will take advantage of you. They have housekeepers as spies and also students will spy and rat people out. Work loads are very heavy. They don’t break up the residents to make the floors even. You have to do dishes and laundry on top of serving, feeding and getting everyone up or to bed.
