The Metcalfe Hotel

The Metcalfe Hotel is a new locally and independently owned and operated downtown Ottawa hotel welcoming guests from the public sector, private sector, civil society, local residents, and tourists from around the world. Our guests enjoy friendly personalized service and the unique experience of staying in a newly-renovated, modern yet historic building with important local and international significance. 

From a staff perspective, it is a happy and fun place to work. Autonomy is promoted, management is empowering/accessible and the workplace encourages initiative, creativity and communication. 

The hotel is constantly changing, growing and full of opportunity to gain experience and contribute creatively.

Beautiful restaurant/hotel with a high expectation for performance and professionalism. Staff are fun and competent but issues with every level of management. Not inherently bad place to work but the heavy workload coupled with chronic short staffing leaves much to be desired. The pressure from higher levels of management/ownership leaves many involved stressed without adequate support to operate. It’s an environment that can be off putting to work in simply because the expectation of staff often exceeds the practical ability to perform which absolutely leads to conflicts between staff and management. All that said the restaurant is busy and in general guests are personable and provide a fairly reliable stream of income. It’s not a company without its flaws but there does seem to be desire to improve and grow with time and experience. All things considered a decent place to work as long as you’re willing to accept that the environment is transitional and frankly very stressful. You will either thrive under the pressure, or burn out very quickly as many previous  staff have. 

This is a fantastic place to work. It is by far the best hotel job I've ever had.  

Management is very supportive and always willing to listening to you whether it's about something that could be done better, or a new step that could be added to make a task more efficient.  My colleagues are great, and are always willing to help you out no matter what the task may be.  

Working in a hotel can guarantee that some days will feel long and stressful, so it is nice to know that there are a great group of people to back you up if support and assistance are needed.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Nothing, they discourage ordering food from their restaurant, employ turnover is constant . Employ retention is zero. HR are deceiving and not honest. Employees to them are worthless.No respect or consideration towards employees . GM and GSM continuously changing ( FIRED ). Unstable environment to say the least ! They don’t appreciate good employees. Respect from HR is non existent . 2 GM’s and 4 GSM’s in the last year !

Constant change in management.

Extremely stressful. Expectations are unattainable and support is limited 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very stressful and degrading. Parent company micro manages from a different province and city and has created an extremely unpleasant environment

Poor management all he does is sit in his office and play games never helps when needed can't even place an order right always running out of stuff then you have to run somewhere to get it he definitely needs to go it would be better if the hotel didn't bring in Sodexo to run the restaurant the GM of the hotel has no respect for the restaurant staff it's very low pay for the amount of work you have to do and the benefits are not good i do not recommend anyone accept a job for the restaurant part of the hotel

If you are looking for a temporary job, then apply here. If not, don't. The turnover is very high, even management is regularly replaced.  You are not valued for your work, and will be given tasks that are no where related to the job you were hired for

to my knowledge, they let a few people go just before the 3 month probation finishes. no real reasoning behind it

The Metcalfe Hotel is a dream to work for. The location is easy to get to at any time. Management is very responsive and quick to handle any issues, that being said. If you dont show up on time or steal from the bar this position is not for you. Currently working with some of the best co workers ottawa has to offer.

The workplace culture is one that I have not experienced too often in my  career. Very team oriented where all members of the team are genuinely appreciated of one another and the role they play within the organization.

Beautiful environment. Competitive compensation. Independently owned. The hotel is located in the heart of downtown and the guests are mostly business travellers or tourists so the check ins are generally easy. Great job for friendly, detail oriented people.
