The Mobile Shop

The Mobile Shop location I worked at was overall good, the Manager was younger and very understanding of lifes ups and downs and was great with working out time off and working with you to get things done.

The company as a whole however is run very poorly.
I've worked at other cellular retail stores and while most are greedy and usually poorly managed, this was something else.

First off, there are huge cliques and favoritism amoung the management and higher ups, if you were disliked or store manager was disliked then you were not safe, you could be let go at any time, but if you were liked then you would be safe and could mess up multiple times with no real reprecussions.

They also can't stand behind policy, I've learned if you whine and cry enough, they will cave into you, whether its PC Points or Device related, they wont hold there ground on policy for long, want to return a damaged phone? Hand it to the emplyee working and when they hand it back and say "no its damaged" just say they damaged it, and boom, return approved, doesnt matter if that policy is stated on there receipts and contracts, they'll immediately cave in and let you have what you want.

They also baby, they have forms you need to send for approval to the DM or Head Office for things like Prepaid to Postpaid migrations and Multi-line activations, forcing the customer to wait until someone approves it, or denies it. No other Cellular retailer has this practice and does just fine, these forms are put in place due to people misusing migration offers, well, disicpline those people, fire them, rather than punish everyone with a mundane and idiotic process.

Overall, boring job, way to stressful for what its worth, though decent commission if you're good, but is that worth your mental well being? Up to you.


Also, like most retailers, the head office has an awful understanding of different regions demographics, expecting each and every store to do what the top stores do without considering any other factors.


Also bring back Mobile Experts, Mobilist sounds like I hate Disabled people.

When I first started it was a struggle, as I did not come from a wireless background, but I was able to gain experience and earned decent money.  I enjoyed my work. There has been a shift, though. 

There has been so much turnover with upper management and other stores that it is chaos. Forget 'work/life balance'.  You will be expected to stay as long as a customer is there, working overtime almost everyday if you are a busier store. You will be expected to attend mandatory video meetings that are unpaid, if it lands on your day off.  None of the computer set-ups are ergonomic, so you will get back/feet/arm issues 

Expect intense micro-management and over reporting of daily activities to try to prove you are actually working. Expect that no matter how much you sell, it will never be enough.   Sales is already a pressure filled job, but expect immense pressure.  Plans and discounts are overly complicated and now with adding home services it's so hard to keep up. 

Training is non-existent.  You train yourself with daily questions, articles, and workbooks. You must learn on the go while dealing with a customer. Expect to help new staff at the expense of your own numbers, which means more micro-management as you're expected to outperform while also fixing all the messes new staff create when quoting. 

Schedules will be changed without notice and without communication. If you try to book a day off for an appointment expect to be asked to still come in right after, or try to justify why you would like the full day. 

Incentive programs are only for the tops sellers in the whole country. Usually achieved by not following company policies. 

Although I loved the job itself, I was not to thrilled with the way the management worked. In the nine months that I worked there, I had had a total of five different managers, as well as working for two months without a manager. The system we used did not allow associates to do ordering or solve any problems we might of had. Therefore, nothing got done. I found the only way to get things done was to reach out to the other managers and have them order to their location and then ship it to us. This worked for a while. But it takes twice as long to get the product, and you get more unhappy customers who wont return to you in the future. The schedule for the store would be posted at most one week in advance and at least three times a week I would be stuck doing a ten hour shift, by myself. In the end, the only reason I ended up leaving was because in April I had applied to take a vacation of ten days from June sixth to the sixteenth. (To which I had no problem it being an un-payed vacation) I was told there would be no issue in me taking it, so I got my stuff ready for my vacation. On the third of June I was informed that I would not be able to take my vacation due to no staffing. I called our other stores in the area and the managers were more then willing to send some employees to cover me as all of the stores had an hour budget. I brought this up to my district manager and he still told me I couldn't take it. Having everything already paid for and ready to go I told him that my last day would be the fifth of June. It had very much upset me it turned out that way. I loved the job and I was very good at it.

Strongly recommending to save your time here.
HFC culture (hire and fire). There's almost no employee qualified enough to do the job properly that aligns with the company's standards which are not even that high and upper management does nothing about it. Within a week of online training you will be expected to poach customers who're literally grocery shopping and get them to buy a phone. 

They hire lots of desperate international students and squeeze them off their energy because none of the people who can actually score a decent sales job would ever work here. This combined with an unrealistic sales target and constant employee turnover will make sure of your early exhaustion and the disrespect that comes later on. People that are still working either have no morals/ethics of their own or are tied up as this is the best they can do. 

Most Managers/Associates who have the highest sales are location dependant with minimal skills whatsoever and are able to retain their position by constantly sweet talking to their respective bosses. Lots of fraud happens with poor customers and within the company itself. 

Pay is decent if you are salaried but not enough considering the amount of work you'll have to put in and they they try to lure you in by showing off their beat up commission structure which only looks good in charts. 

Let alone the job I would recommend to not even purchase anything from this company as you will regret it later on and will feel cheated upon. 

A typical day at work includes opening the store which means counting the cash to make sure it's all there, making sure the kiosk and surrounding area is clean, and flipping the cell phone displays so that the customers are able to view them. Then you basically have to figure out how to get customers to come to the stand and figure out if they want/need a new cell phone or a new plan/carrier and sell them on it.
I learned all about how to work and utilize the different cell phones that are out there, which phone company is the best, which is the worst, which has the best prices, which is most expensive. I also learned how to make a sale.
Management isn't all that great, I haven't seen my boss in a month, he continually doesn't tell me what I'm working until the day before I have to work it, schedules me for days I said I was unavailable, etc. Very unorganized.
My coworkers, however, are great! Always help me when I have questions that need to be answered, always corrects me if I'm doing something wrong, they are very easy-going and laid-back, they are very easy to get along with and friendly!
The hardest part of the job is getting customers to come in and purchase a cell phone, there are many nights where you sit there and not talk to anybody for hours on end. And then when you do talk to a customer, it's to instruct them on how to use their phone.
The most enjoyable part of my job was when I did actually make a sale, seeing the commission that I'd earned, the rewards that I received, the coworkers are awesome, and the customers are super friendly.

The Mobile Shop management is making an extremely high-stress environment at workplace for its employees. By stress here I do not mean the workload or how fast paced it is or it could be . It’s all about the dissatisfaction with management you guys will definitely be facing while working there. 
The company's direction, the team you guys will be working with, their compensation role, and their store goals and methods for achieving the sales target would leave you guys a nightmare.

Through my time working at the Mobile shop I learned that the other name this company has given to this role is the best synonym for sales job and that’s called humiliation.

They will humiliate you by asking you to engage superstore shoppers around the superstore handing them their brochures to make few dollars commission only if you could convert the conversation to a sale.

They will humiliate you by asking you to engage superstore shoppers by standing in front of the superstore entrance and checkouts handing customers plan and phone pricing grids to hunt customers and sell them a product or service and keep their business flow.

They will humiliate you to call and text customers asking them to come before their contract ends and do an early upgrades to keep yourself and the store busy.

They don’t care that what it makes mobilists feel every time they get rejected, not knowing that it ruins their whole mood right exactly when they begin their shift, not knowing that his/her social status, either by force or willingly, has just decreased.

But still they ask you to do all these without to pay you fairly for the results the are asking for.


TLDR: Highly underpaid job with terribly questionable management practices.

Company is paying minimum wage for complicated work that is at least worth C$22/hr. 
Management excepts employees to arrive at store 15 minutes earlier than scheduled time to familiarize themselves with plans and pricing without paying them salary.
Ineffective employee training is provided, and the knowledge and skills required in TMS takes a minimal of 3 month for any new hire to get familiarized with. 
Management expects new hires to magically know how to perform a sale on the portals without properly training them.
There is literally no work-life balance in this job, as the shifts are highly irregular and inconsistent, management sometimes make changes to shifts in short notice (< 7 days) or even sometimes without notice.
There is a commission structure in place, but it only makes sense if the employee can meet multiple targets on different sales categories. Otherwise the commission is less than $500 per month in an average season in a moderate store.
Unrealistic targets and immense pressure from management for sales numbers even on slow seasons, management only cares about numbers, even when achieving such numbers would require compromising customer experience.
The inventory is totally messed up and there is always a 50% chance that customer cannot buy the exact model of the phone they wanted due to this.
Management is very ignorant on stores operation issues and never resolve them in a timely manner.

Learned all carrier portals, nice for looking for other jobs.
Management cares little about your availability as you will be constantly called in, you will need to second check their training with the online training, do not just take their word (this was my downfall). If you aren't willing to commit all your time to it, even out of work, then they will tell you this isn't the job for you. Work culture is heavily sales driven. You will also be reviewed every week by your manager on ways to improve or on things you did well on during your shifts. You must be very adamant with conversation leading otherwise your other colleagues will take your sales. The most enjoyable part of the job was some other coworkers were fun to work with and that you can make decent money if you are good at bringing business in and meeting your own personal sales goals. You will be mentally drained here, and I had to take a personal leave of absence for the first time in any of my working life while employed here. 

Working at Glentel was a very negative experience. During break times, you’re expected to sit in the back room, but if a customer comes in, you have to drop everything and assist them, cutting your break short. The sales goals are unrealistic, and there’s constant pressure to hit numbers, even during slow seasons. Management expects you to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled shift to familiarize yourself with pricing and plans, but you aren’t compensated for this extra time. The work environment is unprofessional and unhealthy, with no regard for work-life balance. While there is a commission structure, it only makes sense if you can hit multiple targets in different categories—otherwise, you’re lucky to earn $500/month in a moderate store during an average season. The pressure to meet sales numbers is overwhelming, and management only cares about hitting those numbers, even if it means compromising customer experience. The DMS (District Manager) is solely focused on pressuring you for sales and will hold personal grudges against you, even if you meet targets. I would avoid working here at all costs. This is not a place for anyone who values honesty, respect, or fair treatment in the workplace.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I had some excellent experiences as team lead of the location where I worked. The President's Club program awarded me with some wonderful travel opportunities.
Unfortunately, unreasonable demands and ever-changing policies coming from head office made it hard to remain compliant to certain mandatory procedures. Even though I had brought my location to flagship status in my province, and we were serving customers non stop, my team and I were obligated to perform customer call-backs to remind them their contracts were ending. Because we were so busy, none of us were ever able to complete their lists. Upper management didn't care, and I was written up for non-compliance. After receiving a 3rd written warning for the same issue, I was laid off. 
No one cared that my store was one of the most profitable on the east coast, and had some of the best sales numbers for my province, in spite of being in a small town in a remote area. 

Since my departure from the location I managed, many clients have stopped returning, and their status as flagship has dropped. 
I suppose they must have time to do callbacks now. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Unreasonable demands from upper management. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Company culture was fantastic, until Loblaws took over.
