The Reading Foundation

This is a great job to work at if you love teaching outside of a classroom setting and value one on one connections with your students. It is structured so that you switch students hourly, which helps your day move along and also allows you to see up to 8 students in a day. The schedule can be variable as it depends on how many students are there in any given day and what kind of last minute changes they have asked for, but the schedulers and receptionists are also pretty good about flexibility and try their best to be fair with shifts. It does tend to change last minute due to student's changing their schedules, but usually they are pretty good about managing these changes as best they can.

The culture is great, super fun and lots of friendships are made especially during training. A majority of the staff are in their 20s and 30s. It would be great if there were more group events, since working one on one with students all day sometimes limits how much people get to interact after training is over. 

There are biweekly meetings at lunch where the staff can discuss how things are going, which is great to feel connected to what is happening with the students' progress. There are also lots of different roles for those that are interested in staying long term and let management know that they are interested. The programs are also constantly being updated or modified for the students, so it is great to feel like you can always innovate and not just do the same thing over and over. Definitely lots of brain power goes into this job! 

The hardest part of the job is having patience for managing trickier behaviour, but because you switch students hourly, it is pretty manageable. There was recently behaviour management training as well, which helped me feel a lot more prepared for dealing with my students. Initial training is also pretty intense, but it is definitely needed since there is so much to know when you start working with the students. You get a lot of support with observations and feedback in the first couple months, and it is a really open environment to ask for help or any questions you have.

I wanted to love the job but it was a terrible experience for me. Working with the kids was either really fun or super stressful. You’re expected to get through a lot of content during each session and depending on the child’s mood, that may or may not happen. My issue wasn’t with the children though. The work environment wasn’t ideal. You’re required to go through training to learn about their methods and strategies which was really fun and informative. I don’t think it really prepares you for the actual lessons you’ll be conduction though. I feel like you’re thrown into the deep end and expected to figure it out. Of course you can go to team leaders but they’re usually teaching their own lessons too. You only get 30 mins for lunch, and sometimes you may have a child in your care during that time so you can’t completely disconnect from work. Meetings are also held during lunch which gives you no time to relax during your shift. The work-life balance was awful. The scheduling varies each week so it’s difficult to make plans and get into a routine. Your schedule can also change at the last minute depending on cancellations so you could be asked to go home earlier than expected. There’s a lot of prep that needs to be done at the end of the day and you’re only allowed 15 extra mins, anything more than that has to be approved. The job came with a lot of responsibilities with little to no compensation. It’s rewarding working with children and witnessing their growth first hand but knowing how much these parents pay for these lessons, The Reading Foundation can definitely afford to pay their employees more. Everyone was pretty nice and willing to help whenever it was needed. I think a lot more can be done to support workers. 

I worked at The Reading Foundation for two years and learned SO much about myself and the career I was hoping to go into. My former colleagues and co-workers were incredibly helpful, kind, and supportive, creating a collaborative and encouraging work environment. It truly felt like a team, where everyone worked together to ensure we stayed on the same page and supported one another. There were days when I struggled at the beginning, but the encouragement and reassurance from those around me made all the difference. Knowing that we were all in it together helped me push through challenges and grow both personally and professionally.

Beyond the incredible team, the most rewarding part of my experience was working with the kids. Each child I worked with was bright, curious, and eager to learn, and it was amazing to see their confidence grow over time. Some days were tough, but witnessing their progress—whether it was mastering a new skill or simply gaining more confidence—made every challenging moment worth it.

One challenge I faced was balancing work with my studies. Being a student at the time, there were moments when the workload felt overwhelming, and schedule changes could sometimes be difficult to manage. However, the supportive team environment helped make these challenges more manageable.

My time at The Reading Foundation not only gave me valuable professional experience but also led to lifelong friendships. The bonds I formed with my colleagues extend far beyond the workplace, and I’m grateful to have built relationships that will last a lifetime.

I've worked at The Reading Foundation for the past year, deciding to step away to pursue school full-time. However, I'm incredibly grateful for the time I've spent with TRF, as this job made me a more confident educator and helped me in my personal life.

I was initially overwhelmed when I started working here, as the training was pretty fast-paced and I had to memorize a lot of information. However, there was plenty of support and I always felt like I could ask for help or further training when necessary. After just a few weeks, I felt confident teaching independently and it was cool to see that growth within myself.

In addition, TRF is committed to supporting their staff and every few months, we would have meetings in order to touch base on how everyone was feeling and how we could grow as a team to help support students and each other better. 

The kids were sweet and one of my favorite aspects of this job was getting to bond with them. It was really cool to see them grow as learners and I loved getting to play games/color together. Of course, there are some that like to test boundaries, which was something I struggled with initially. However, setting and maintaining boundaries is something I've always had trouble with, so working here forced me to overcome that weakness, which has helped me grow personally and professionally.

One of the cons was the unpredictable hours which made it difficult to plan things. I did have to be flexible but everyone is very supportive and wants to work with you to make sure your needs are being met. Overall, TRF is a friendly, inclusive environment and I really enjoyed my time there.

Working at The Reading Foundation is rewarding, engaging, dynamic, and challenging. It is so wonderful to get to work one-to-one with students who struggle, only to see over time that they can overcome their obstacles and difficulties and succeed academically!
A typical day includes working with preschool, primary, intermediate, high school, and adult students in a variety of programs: reading/spelling, comprehension, math, and writing. You get a different student each hour, which makes the days fly by and allows you to connect with so many wonderful people during the day. Many employees also grow into other roles over time. This is a great place to be for the long term, as there is always something new and exciting to learn! 
Our overall culture is focused on learning and improvement for staff as well as students. The staff and management all support each other and work well as a team. Everyone gets along well, and we spend a lot of time laughing.
People who do best at this job are flexible with their time, quick and creative thinkers, empathetic and sensitive, and hard-working, because long days of teaching can be tiring - but so worthwhile.

The Reading Foundation offers one-to-one remediation and enrichment for a wide scope of individuals ranging in age from as young as 3 year-olds to adults. Clinician's train to teach individualized, research-based programs that cater to a student’s specific learning needs. 

Training is thorough, with opportunities to observe as you learn new concepts. As you transition from training to teaching, senior staff sit in with you to ‘team teach’ to build your skills and answer any questions that you may have. A collaborative work environment between Team Leaders and Clinicians rounds out the fast-paced setting, allowing for students to receive a balanced approach to their progress.

This job teaches a great deal about educating young children, motivating them, and working with a variety of learning challenges. Academic and personal transformations witnessed in the students make the job inarguably fulfilling, while diverse staff and students make the work fun and encouraging.

The rotating schedule means your day has variety built in and unlike other jobs in education, there is no marking to take home or extra-curriculars to run, which makes for great work-life balance. 

The culture is excellent; management is honest and direct, but also incredibly supportive. Staff are friendly and genuine - their commitment and care for students is palpable and key to the clinic's success. 

It is a small company with a pretty steep learning curve, but management recognizes talent, drive, and most importantly, self-reflection. Yes, it takes time to build up seniority and the preferable hours/wages/benefits that come with that - but that's just how work works.

I have worked at the Reading Foundation for a few years and tremendously value all the hard work all the staff put in into changing the lives of students. The most enjoyable part of the job for me is seeing the student's develop many fundamental skills such as reading, comprehension, math, and writing. Witnessing kids develop more self-confidence and esteem and make academic gains is very rewarding and keeps me very passionate about the work we do. The staff is incredibly dedicated and are a great group of people to be around and work with every day. There are many opportunities for advancement and professional development  which is very valuable. I think the culture of the Reading Foundation is one that radiates high quality work, caring, and commitment to changing the lives of students. What is the best part of working at the company?
Getting to see the kids' progress throughout their time at the clinic is extremely rewarding. The team leads are incredibly supportive of the clinicians as they try to navigate the learning curve of the training so they can be confident in their work.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful part is when you first join the company because you are basically rewiring your brain tow work based on the evidence-based programs at the company, but once you make it past the learning curve and if you make sure to ask questions early, it becomes a lot more manageable.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The team leaders and Director at my clinic are very supportive and helpful when I have questions. Since it is a smaller team of specialized clinicians, it is easy to get along with everyone.

The job involves working one-on-one with students and teaching specially-designed programs in reading, writing, comprehension, and math. For many students, this is a life-changing program, as it gives them confidence that they truly can succeed in school. 


The office environment is very friendly and positive. The staff are all dedicated to their jobs and feel rewarded when they witness the progress the students can make in a short time. 


The work is very interesting and stimulating, as you will be delivering different programs throughout the day. There are also opportunities to work in different capacities within the company.
