The Root Cellar Village Green Grocer

Working as a Produce Supervisor at The Root Cellar Village Green Grocer for the past three years has been an overall great experience. The job has provided me with a wealth of knowledge about produce and retail operations, which has been a big plus.

The team is a diverse group of individuals who are passionate about providing fresh, local, and organic produce to the community. I've learned a lot from my colleagues and feel that we've built a strong, cohesive team.

The work itself can be physically demanding, which isn't surprising in a produce department. Stocking, rotating, and ensuring the quality of the fruits and vegetables keeps you on your toes. However, the sense of satisfaction you get when customers appreciate the quality and selection is rewarding.

The management is generally supportive and encourages open communication. They're open to ideas about improving the department and making our workflow more efficient. However, there have been times when decisions from upper management didn't seem to consider the on-the-ground realities in the produce department.

The hours can be long, especially during peak seasons, but the management ensures that everyone gets adequate time off.

One area of improvement could be the opportunity for professional growth. While I've gained a lot of hands-on experience, I would appreciate more formal training opportunities to further develop my skills and knowledge in retail management.

Overall, I would recommend this position to those who are passionate about local produce and enjoy a fast-paced work environment. It's been a fruitful journey, no pun intended, and I look forward to continuing my growth with The Root Cellar Village Green Grocer.


I am a student and was given continual opportunities to learn and train in my department. I started as a clean up person in the butcher department (they call it The Chop Shop), and was making sausages and learning meat cutting by the time I left.   I could have completed my butcher training there if I hadn't had to move away for school, which I thought was pretty cool. Most education you have to pay for but it was like they were paying me to learn . And you get 20% discount on groceries, which is a pretty big deal when you're a student!

I worked FT for 2 years, and learned a ton.  I really enjoy the co workers and the customers are fantastic - lots of regulars so you get to know people and they look forward to seeing you which is nice.  The store is busy, and there's always a lot to do so shifts go by super quickly. If I move back to Victoria, I'll definately try to work there again, you see a lot of employees who leave for school etc come back which is nice. 

I was very excited to start my new job as an assistant manager. It fell apart fast as my manager was having personal problems and leaving the company. That person was my trainer but wasn’t available and my training was sporadic and confusing. I reached out several times for proper instruction. It didn’t work out. A co worker decided that I was not manager material and caused friction in the team. I was let go. A very disappointing experience. 

My experience of RC was that of a good one. Being there for almost two years, I made wonderful friends and learned so much. With my position in the Deil, I learned to be flexible in any given situation and to pick things up fast, especially when things were always changing there. For people who may either be looking for something new or are just starting out, this job is a perfect place to learn new things or build on their previous experience.

The staff is the best part of the job. Management is good people, but are not properly trained in managing staff. The turnover rate is way too high. The attitude from management is that it is easier to replace you rather than give raises. Lots of work for low pay. Benefits only after 1 year. Very few perks.

I liked working here, had to leave for school but they said I was welcome back if I wanted. They were really helpful with my schedule and the managers and my coworkers were always super nice. Christmas there was always the best, the managers and owners made sure we felt importaant.

Only thing... I wish the uniform aprons had pockets... but other then that I liked it. I would go back to work there one day again once i'm done school.

The environment is that of a normal grocery store. Don’t expect something different. The turnover is incredibly high, and overall it felt like nobody in management really cared about this. This turnover leads to low workplace moral, because as a lower level employee, you know you don’t really matter. 

Like most say, it was great until it wasn’t. I mainly enjoyed my time there because of the friends i made along the way. The work was fun sometimes until they get you doing way more than what you’re qualified for.  Also workplace bullying was happening and HR didn’t really do anything to address or fix the issue. They don’t care about their employees, was there for over a year and the owners never took the time to introduce themselves. 

I really enjoyed my time at the root cellar, it's a super fun environment and everyone is really nice! I learned a lot and loved to be a part of the community and know that by working here I am supporting local and being environmentally conscious.

I also feel very safe working here with our COVID protocols and cleanliness standards for staff and customers.
