The Royal Conservatory

I loved working at the RCM, very friendly staff, students and faculty. The building is beautiful in a great area- there is always something interesting happening in the building. The salaries they offer are incredibly low, hard to live comfortably with the given salary for a middle level administrator. There is not a lot of opportunity to advance your career, as most senior staff are appointed or have been in the role for decades. As someone with 5+ years of experience, I was forced to leave my job as the salary did not meet minimum living expenses in Toronto. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Building, location, and impacting the lives of children through music. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lack of quality decision making, toxic culture, lack of accountability by senior management, and outright lying. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working on priorities that are important and getting interrupted with an urgent request that isn't important at all.

Because I am a private piano teacher, I make my own schedule. This works extremely well during the school year! I've learned to deal with many clients at a time, my clients being the parents of my students. Though scheduling many students can be tough, I have gained a lot of experience and it is no longer an issue. I love being able to work with children because they are so fun to teach and most of the time very enthusiastic to learn.

I volunteered during the examinations. The staff was very nice and the only job was to set up the exam room, watch the test takers to make sure there was no cheating, and then dismantle the room. There are some rude parents that want to sit next to their kid while they're taking the exam, but it's not your job to deal with them.

The work life balance offered at the Royal Conservatory is great, managers are willing to accommodate for most requests for time off. Very rarely do I need to take work home with me. I've also been wfh since the pandemic and that in itself is a great benefit imo.

I currently teach young children introductory piano. A typical day includes scales, repertoires, classical and/or jazz pieces, modern pieces, and various exercises. I seek to stimulate an inviting and fun atmosphere and am open to new possibilities with respect to teaching plans and styles.

Typical day at work is to open the exam centre early before the examiner and candidates arrive to ensure everything is ready for a full day of examinations.

In this job, I have had the opportunity to partner with different school districts both on reserve and off to development arts based programming that connects curriculum and Indigenous ways of knowing/being

Toxic management and few opportunities for advancement. Whole org basically one big vanity project of the president. Declining organization grasping at straws.

It has been my pleasure to work with the Royal Conservatory of Music. They are a helpful, supportive, and professional organization and create an excellent working environment.
