The Shoe Company

I would never recommend this company to anyone. I had the worst experience of my life. I was with this company for a year and over time, I only grew to resent this company. 

Let's start with when I got hired, I was given a key-holder position right on the spot when I got interviewed. I eventually learned that they were super short staffed because a great amount of associates quit due to poor management. I was told I would be getting paid $7/hr plus commission. Come to find out, every other associate in the whole company was getting at least minimum wage plus commission while myself and 3 other associates had to settle for $7/hr. We were told we would be reimbursed. This went on for a few weeks but in the end, we were all given some silly excuse and we never got reimbursed. I also heard that in some parts of the country, some associates get paid more in commission because they were offered a higher rate than others. I can't verify that but hey, I wouldn't doubt it after all these shady things this company would do to the people that make this company. I knew I should of quit then but I really wanted to give this company the benefit of the doubt because they were going through such a huge turn over, I kept saying to myself, things have to get better. 

Things only got worse from there. The expectations were unrealistic. When there was no superior for several months, I was expected to manage and excel in sales. There were days where I couldn't focus on selling because I had to deal with merchandising or internal duties. Those paychecks were the worst, taking home only $7/hr was so degrading and upsetting. Why did I stay? I was told if I could continue doing my best, I'd get rewarded. I never was. Instead I got replaced by someone that I literally taught everything they know. I should of left then, but I didn't, why? I was so knowledgeable about everything, I got along with all my co-workers, I enjoyed every other aspect and I couldn't bring myself to quit. 

As the months went by, I only learned that the superiors did not care about the existence of any one that was not in a management role. Any concern or issue that was ever brought up to a superior would only be shut down or prolonged with some lame excuse. There were times I had to reach out to the Head Office to address my issues but even then, they were absolutely no help at all. They would say, "I'm gonna have to talk to your manager about this." Nothing would be resolved from there, it was just a continuous cycle. Isn't it just disappointing that I can't even rely on my own superiors and I have to resort to HR or Head Office? Wait... There is no help from them either. 

Many of the reviews I've read are absolutely true. This company is constantly changing managers, staff are underpaid and under appreciated, there is no support but favoritism and judgement. This company is so unprofessional on so many levels, you'd think such a big company that has 4 other banners within them would be a great company to work with. Absolutely not.

Started working for the Shoe Company in January.  The training seemed to focus more on greeting and regreeting customers rather than actual shoe knowledge or customer service. How many ways can I say hello? It's a mouthful what they expect you to say and comes off scripted and not genuine. A customer could ask me a question about a shoe and I'd have no idea. Because my training was focused on how to say hello 5 different ways a shift. I had to do training videos on my own time not paid for... This doesn't seem right to me. The training booklet was exhausting, and to fill it out I had to literally just copy what the main binder says. I've worked retail before, this is not effective training. I never received the shoonies I was supposed to get for completing training along with the customer service I provided. None. If I didn't do the work I was supposed to I wouldn't get paid so how do you get away with not giving something to an employee that you promise them upon hiring? Also found it odd how much attention was placed on vacuuming and mopping the store. As in, actually being graded on it. I applied to sell shoes and give customer service, to be honest vacuuming an entire store is not something I should have to put 120% effort into. The doors cannot be locked until ten minutes past closing, and you cannot tell a customer you are closing. That's having a lot of respect for your employees! My time is precious to me, I have other things planned with my own time, there is a reason you have a closing time and it should be stuck to. That one purchase won't make or break your sales. However I'm graded on being there ten minutes before my shift? A little respect for your employees would go a long way. The discount was alright... But like I said never received my shoonies so the slogan of earn free shoes seems to be a lie to me. Now I am no longer an employee, I'm a customer and that left a sour taste in my mouth for this company as a whole. Plenty of of other places I'll probably shop now. 

At first I enjoyed it, because I like working with people. However the way the staff acted as if everything can be put on the new girl (quite obvious) and how I didn't receive my shoonies, the atmosphere in general, I dreaded it. I had to leave for personal reasons, however if those had not arisen, I would have left anyway. The manager of this store was great though, I did enjoy working with her and she did seem to care about her employees and her customers. One of the only pleasant parts of working there! If I were you Shoe Company I would hold on to her!

My experience with this company was absolutely horrible. The manager of my store was immature, uneducated, and unfair. The manager let personal feelings get in the way of scheduling shifts (i.e. if you weren't a favourite, she would give you 4-4.5 hours a week and usually sent home early), would hire more people when she couldn't give out more hours to the staff she already had, and did not train us at all. The company itself is cheap. The main thing we read in the handbook is KEEP THE CUSTOMER HAPPY!! If they want a full refund for a scratch you can only see with a microscope, give it to them; if the price on the tag differs with that on the computer when it scans, honour the tag; the associates at my store were discouraged to do so, and if they did it anyway, reprimanded harshly. The manager only trained us when the DM was supposed to come in. The manager told associates that she would give shifts based on sales per hour of the previous week: she never did. The company itself is cheap, unreliable, and poor quality. The dye from the leather bled onto my feet from wearing them all day long. They did not stretch the way they were supposed to, nor did they stay wearable for long. My pay was horrible (probably because the manager never scheduled me for money making shifts). Near the end of my employment, I gave up on selling and just stood around for the number of hours I was there. I had no incentive to sell, nor did I particularly care if I met my daily sales goal. Incredibly unimpressed with the company, and my old store. I'm so happy I left.

I worked at Cross Iron Mills location. A normal day would be helping customers, scanning their shoes, cleaning etc. Sales Associates didn't get to do as much unfortunately as Leads who would get to fill quiet times with tasking. It's incredibly boring as a Sales Associate when it's slow. They discouraged tasking unless you begged and there's only so much cleaning you can do.
That stuff was easy enough. Ringing people through though takes so long when you have to force people to sign up. They get mad at staff when they get a certain amount of no's which is unfair because they have a right to say no. And it's not fair because sales associates here do not get enough pay or any commission to be forcing programs on people. And let's be real, almost every place forces loyalty programs on people and naturally people get tired of it and want to say no. 
Don't work here if forcing things on people isn't your style, because it'll stress you out knowing you have to reach a certain number each day and will get likely less shifts if you don't make it. even though people need shoes and will come in and buy regardless of signing up so the company is still profiting. The pressure is just not worth it for minimum wage

Town Shoes is a great environment to work in. Many things about Town Shoes are really good, such as, the employees, meeting/talking with regular and new clients.

My typical day at work would include management, sales, organization and coaching.
I would review previous results from the year before, month before and day before to insure we are on track for sales. Coaching in the moment with part-time employees to improve their sales by suggestions and giving constructive criticism. Organizing all new and old documents from the email system, reviewing them, and giving other associates the understanding of them.

I have learned a lot during this job such as keeping organized. One of the main things I learned was not only learning and understanding the job, but being the support system for the other associates who also are learning and understanding it as well. 

The hardest part of my job, is being on the feet most of the day. 

The most enjoyable part of my day is realizing that you can make a difference in someones life just by connecting, and asking questions about someone. Giving the clients a great experience in the store, can change their day from good to bad. The success comes from having everyone that comes in, leave happy, even if they leave with or without a purchase.

A typical day included replenishing stock, helping customers and dealing with the terrible management. 

In the span of the time I worked there (less than a year) I had 3 managers in which one quit, the other was moved to another location and the other one was the regional manager. 

Store often felt gross, often not cleanly at all. The employee bathroom was barely clean as well.

Management is a disaster at the location I worked at and due to it I wouldn't reccomend it to anybody.

I had people given my personal phone number and I was being texted 4-8 times a week about covering/taking shifts which I felt uncomfortable with doing since I had a lot of plans. I got lectured by management for "not taking one for the team" by not taking said shifts.

Lectured for taking sick days when I was concerned with getting others sick meaning they'd be even more understaffed.

Most enjoyable part of the job was the customers, I loved helping people in that store. I grew my knowledge on shoes and shoe culture. Cash was a blast, their program is very smart and easy to get people set up on. Only concern about it is when a customer asked for their information to be deleted a co-worker said they deleted said information but in fact did not.

Management:
For the 2 years I have been there, I have experienced being with several different managers who have come and gone. The management team is friendly and works well with its associates in terms of hours and with its customers.

The most challenging part of the job was dealing with customers as it tested patience, focus, and multitasking. It taught me how to push for sales, deal with different types of customers, and to keep my head up. 

At times cleaning was also a challenge as boxes were often pulled out and the contents inside the box were scattered all over the floor. 

The most enjoyable part of the job was getting to share personal experience, opinions, and reviews with customers about certain products. Along with that, the team I worked alongside with was great for the most part.

BY FAR, this was my favourite job hands down. The staff was incredible, everyone was so friendly and down-to-earth, and it was like a second family. My manager was also incredible, I learned so much from him and he always encouraged me and believed in my abilities. It was such an uplifting atmosphere. The hours were pretty ok too, typical retail hours it doesnt change much wherever you go. busy during sale times, kind of dead the rest of the time. 
Commission was excellent to add to your pay especially if you made a lot of sales. 
Another awesome thing was the minimal and easy cleaning and maintenance of the store. I have worked in clothing stores before and it was a nightmare with the amount of folding, refolding, reorganizing etc. With shoes its great, just straighten everything on display back up, sweep/mop the floor, dust shelves and youre out within 15 mins.

Micro managed to a tee, ridiculous script and processes to ensure customers are "delighted". Customers sometimes take advantage and walk all over you. The company does not care about their employees and do the absolute bare minimum for them. 

For example: The budget for the store Christmas party was around $150.00 for a roster of 10 people. We had to eat dinner at our manager's home whom none of us liked because that's about all we could do with the budget.

There is no commission, which is good because there is no pressure but they still expect you to make sales and the incentive is "Shoe Dollars". A sad medal system where $1 increments are rewarded for discounts off shoes. Well that's great, but I can't pay rent with Shoenies. Yeah...they're called shoenies. 

So in short...The Shoe Company is really cheap, and they couldn't care less about their employees. There are plenty of better places to work.
