The Upkeep Shoppe

Pay is not consistent with other comparable spas and salary is inconsistent between staff regardless of seniority, amount of experience in the industry, or amount of regular clients. Little work/life balance and high chance of being called in on a day off. Estheticians are often overbooked in the summertime with some appointments even overlapping. Service times are often shortened due to very late clients or to fit as many clients in as possible, but estheticians are blamed if they are not on time. Heavy emphasis on retailing to the point where clients have left negative reviews about upsetting, and services can be taken away if staff isn't selling enough products. Any concerns or valid complaints by staff are met with comments like "well at least it's not as bad as xyz spa" or "other spas won't treat you this well". Passive aggressive feedback and bad staff morale. Did not realize just how toxic this workplace was until I changes spas.

I started working here as a freshly graduated aesthetic student. At first, I was well greeted, and encouraged during training by management. However, this quickly changed. I was expected to perform services (that I made known to management I did not learn or am uncomfortable performing), where I was put in high stress situations, as disappointing clients got you highly in trouble (threats of strikes etc.). I was humiliated in front of my clients, and fellow co-workers by management, for a situation that was simply due to a minor miscommunication. They work so hard on maintaining a great public image, but that effort falters when maintaining respectful relationships with their employees. The pay is decent, but isn't worth the mental turmoil of balancing a revolving door of clients, toxic treatment by management, and questionable quality of sanitization. 

I found working at the upkeep shoppe to be a toll on my mental and physical health. At first everything seems fantastic, then it quickly turns into the toxic reality it is. The other aestheticians are fantastic people to work with and they all help each other out. It’s management that is the bad part. It is not unusual to find someone crying in the basement or outside. If you have a valid complaint and you bring it up to management, you will be punished for it. Overall it’s a place to learn and then quickly leave to find a better more welcoming place to work.

I always felt like part of a team that was like a family. The Upkeep Shoppe is very busy which means that there is lots of opportunity to build a clientele to sell and make good tips. I find their pricing to be fair and so you get many clients from all over that come very regularly. Training is strong. I learnt so much from management. The owner is patient and approachable, she really cares about her staff and the business. This is a business I would recommend anyone in the spa industry to work at.

The only thing that kept me here were my awesome coworkers and the fear that I wouldn't find another spa that I would be happy at (news flash; I did). It was a very childishly dramatic atmosphere and problem solving was non-existent. A lot of the drama was created by management, but then they talked in circles about how they wanted a drama-free-zone. Nothing ever changed, and it was exhausting. Working here was terrible for my mental health.

In my opinion, there is good and bad to be commented on. I found the salary good, the hours fairly consistent and the other employees welcoming and loving; however, there was a lot of toxicity amongst management. There always seemed to be some form of drama, gossiping or uncecessary behaviour and it got too much to work amongst. To summarize; I stopped loving being an Esthetician because of the environment there.

Good place to be a client, not the greatest place to be an employee. The spa is very clean, your hours are consistent, you get paid on time and fairly, and your fellow estheticians are lovely. But the management isn't very good. The former manager was wonderful, however the new manager isn't very good. Employees are micro managed and any sort of "leadership" from management just seems like a power trip honestly. 

I found working at the upkeep Shoppe to be very stressful, I was always going into work feeling anxious. 

The Management wasn’t great, the training portion of the job made me lose confidence in my abilities to be an esthetician. 

The best part of this job is the amazing fellow esthetician’s that you work with! And the tips are great. 


The management wasn’t great.

Fast paced environment, very little time between clients. Money is good but doesn’t make up for the stress you will have. There is no balance between enjoying life and working here. Very toxic environment, any past or current employees would agree. Turnover is incredibly high and that in itself shows clients that employees are not happy.

As a client it is a very lovely place to get services. But as an employee it is very stressful and unfair. The hours are long. There is very little time between services to get anything done or have a drink of water. Management is terrible. Employers don't take staff concerns seriously.
