The WORKS Craft Burgers & Beer

I worked at The Works for one month, and my experience wasn't great. During my time there, I only received positive feedback and never anything negative. From day one, I told them I was looking for a full-time job or as many hours as possible, but that never happened because they hired too many people. I never got more than 12 hours a week, and one week I only worked 6 hours. Despite this, they expected me to know everything perfectly.
The training I received was poor and incomplete. They even had a checklist that I never got the chance to review entirely. One supervisor wasn't interested in teaching at all, and another, who was good at training, had physical problems and couldn't finish my training. After a month, I finally felt comfortable with the job and the menu, but without any warning or prior conversation, I was told I was no longer part of the team because I "wasn't up to the standard." The GM who made this decision never really saw me work or gave me any feedback or instructions.
I don't recommend working here. The staff bathroom was often unclean, management could be improved, and they expect the best from employees without providing enough hours, proper training, or feedback.

This place used to be a fantastic place to work, the owner was one of the best bosses I have had. This sentimentality is the only reason it gets two stars. 

When the new owners, taking over in March 2024 came in, I tried to be a team player and honor that legacy. They proved that they were not only incompetent when it comes to running a restaurant, they don't seem to care about all the work servers put in there. 

As a server, you are on your own. You make your own drinks, take orders, serve food, bus and clean table, all without a host as they are no longer being hired by the new owners. On top of this, you tip out 4% of your food sales, which usually amounts to being a third of your tips at least, all for a complete lack of help in return.

It's sad to see how far this place fell, I was there for two years and it went from a great place to work with high morale, to a barely functioning restaurant that would be completely lost if it were up to the new owners. If I was writing this review in January, it would have been a glowing review but unfortunately i can no longer do that. 

It was my first kitchen job ever and I was hired on a whim almost at the last minute before the store opened. We did two weeks training witch didn't feel like much and we all struggled when the restaurant opened Canada day 2015. The management was very helpful and made sure everyone got the help they needed and with in 3 weeks after opening we all had everything down to the teeth and we begin working without managers and trainers in the kitchen just the kitchen supervisor. Don't be fooled by the family atmosphere, if you don't work hard then you will be fired on the spot. Its a kitchen and it will get extremely busy and will be extremely stressful. If you put your mind to it and always make sure you are helping out where you can then you will make it at The WORKS. I loved working there and miss it everyday since I had to move out of Niagara Falls. I became part of a family their, and everyone their became my family. Just make sure you always ask for help and never stand there playing with your thumbs. always ask if there is something you can be doing to help. even if its not what you were assigned to be doing.

The manager is absolutely awful. She treats people with no respect and enjoys humilating them in front of their peers. Countless times during my employment I was SCREAMED at, degraded, belittled and humiliated by this manager. The management is also not helpful during shifts. Many times servers were running around the restaurant trying to serve, host and bartend all at once while the managers stood and talked to each other.  Management expects your life to revolve around this job, like it does for them. Even if you try to set boundaries about your availbility they will be challenged. 

The other servers and kitchen staff are absolutely lovely, kind and helpful. The guests are also great. Tips are good as well, but not at all worth the way you get treated by management. A fish rots from the head and the amount of people who quit this job because of the manager reflects that entirely.

The staff is friendly and kind, and hardworking for the most part. The area supervisor and upper management are completely inexperienced and have not the slightest idea on how to run a restaurant. Owners have a bad habit of withholding server and kitchen tips. Several instances of not getting paid on time for “lack of money”. All employees are continually watched via cameras by “operations manager”, who is quite useless to the company otherwise. Salary on the brink of exploitation, a MINIMUM of 44 hours (overtime) is required to qualify for the salaried position. Continual lack of supplies, owners are unable to effectively run a restaurant and the upper management reflects this ineptitude. Regret working here, wouldn’t even waste my time with the “possibility of advancement”.

For the first 10 months of my time at The Works, everything was great. Hours, work-life balance, coworkers, guests and management was awesome. The location was sold at the end of June and everything went downhill FAST. 
Hours? Cut down to nothing. Coworkers? Replaced with their friends and family that have ZERO experience in that industry. Guests? Non existent. Management was replaced, again by people with no experience. The new owners have been using the remaining staff to train them (owners/new management), demoting supervisors and cutting back wages. Tips are not received unless you ask them multiple times. 
Just weeks ago I would have recommended to work here, 10 days later I say the opposite. 


The manager treats the staff absolutely terrible. She does not care about any of the employees and the general manager lets her get away with anything and everything she does even yelling at and harassing the employees and customers. The staff members excluding the management are great and the money was decent but is 100% not worth the way you are treated. Ask just about anyone who has worked here and they will agree, I would not recommend it at all unless you are interested in being put down and made to feel stupid every single shift. They expect you to revolve your entire life around this job which is just not the case when working part time. 

It is an amazing place to work honestly. I enjoy working with everybody because they are so kind and I just love everybody there. I have learned everything I know about hosting, the servers are very helpful with teaching me new things everyday. All of the managers are amazing at their job, they are kind and make sure everybody is on task but in a nice way. The hardest part of the job is not getting enough hours, if I were to have hours through the week instead of just on the weekend it would be a perfect job. The most enjoyable part is seating guests and just chatting with them about anything, I truly love meeting new people and seeing familiar faces. I love what I do.

Manager is the worst kind of control freak who can never admit fault and always needs to find fault with others. Should not be in hospitality but she's sleeping with the main man so her word is THE word. They do not schedule appropriately for busy times and do not give servers the tools to do a good job. You have to be server, host, bartender, cleaner and manager all at once no matter how busy. Good tips but the stress isn't worth it. Be firm with your availability right from the start or they will schedule you in the most illogical and unfavourable ways.

Things have went so down hill in the last few years. Corporate really took over, everything is premade at a factory. It's all bottom of the barrel items that are bought in buck for cheap, to the point of some items get discontinued and no longer available for sale, so much for gourmet. It's all about profit not quality anymore. As for ownership, it's meh. You do so much for very little thanks or even acknowledgment, and getting told that you are all (all staff) are replaceable isn't the best to hear. Also, poking fun and demeaning a person for their mental health is always helpful for anyone struggling with mental health. You are overworked and underpaid and not appreciated.
