Tip Top Tailors

Tiptop Tailor requires you to have a basic understanding of how to make a sale, and a in depth understanding of the products they sell in order to inform customers about different materials, as well as the fit and finish of the types of apparel that they have. I personally received only two days of training with the excuse that stores would be busy (they were not). For my location, the safety standards in the work place were horrendous, the ladder that we have in our location has the support rails completely bent, and it shakes quite a bit. You could literally die if you are lifting something heavy on the ladder due to the risk of falling being substantially higher. If you are able to have good relations with the staff there, then you will find this work place fulfilling and you will want to go to work. Management will do there best when scheduling you, however if you work part time, they will starve you for hours when starting, and will not care about how often they schedule you. They provided me with very little training, but were very flexible with my job performance early on. Depending on your location, your store may be have some consumer traffic, or be dead inside. DON'T WORK HERE IF YOU ARE A UNIVERSITY OF COLLEGE STUDENT. During winter semesters they will give you a reasonable amount of hours due to black friday, holiday, and boxing day specials, yet they only let you take a few days off for studying and exams, not nearly as much time as required for school. Salary is minimum wage or 1 percent commission if you are able to make more commission then your hourly minimum wage. That means that you have to make 1400 per hour to make commission which means you are definitely never going to make commission no matter how much you sell. One good thing is that Part time sales associates receive 65% off on anything (you will not be able to add any additional discount), however you are required to dress in tiptop tailor clothing that is up to date, meaning you are forced to spend your first few paychecks on new clothes, which can get quite expensive. Don't work here if you are unable to work hard for minimum wage. Overall would not recommend work here at all. There are plenty of other places where you can have a fun work environment and have better pay for an easier job. Pay is horrible, Hours are horrible, staff and management are nice, environment is fun (but for me, kinda dangerous), knowledge of the products is required, if you value your time and hard work at all you should stay away from this job.

One of the primary reasons I requested fewer working hours was due to the physical toll it was taking on my knees and heels. The job required extensive standing and walking, which eventually became unbearable for me. I communicated my concerns to the management, hoping for understanding and empathy, but regrettably, it seems that my concerns fell on deaf ears. To my dismay, just a few days after my request, I received the unfortunate news that I was being let go from my position. 

As someone who values kindness and fairness in the workplace, I found this experience at Tip Top to be a disappointing departure from my expectations. I believe that a company should prioritize the health and well-being of its employees, especially when concerns are expressed regarding physical challenges.

I hope that my feedback serves as a reminder for the management to reevaluate their practices and consider the impact their decisions have on their employees. Potential employees should be aware of these concerns before considering employment at this establishment.

Remember, it's important to create an environment that fosters kindness and understanding, where the needs of employees are acknowledged and respected. Unfortunately, my experience at Tip Top failed to meet these expectations.

A typical day at Tip Top Tailors consists of going through the merchandise on the sales floor and seeing what we have to put out from back stock. It also includes a slow customer environment due to the lack of advertisement, but we still make targets and maximize our customers. Daily cleaning, doing the weekly links that we get for marking merchandise, and trying to keep busy also add to a typical day.
I have learned a lot of different things while working with Tip Top Tailors and listing them all would be a mile long. Just a few that come to mind would be proper customer service, taking time and being patient with the customer and finding their needs and/or wants, knowing my merchandise and how to 'romance' it. I have also learned proper people skills.
I have a fantastic manager who tries his hardest to give hours to everyone who works in our store. My District Manager, on the other hand, is more of a hard guy who is all business.
I love working with my co-workers! I get along with everyone great and it makes the work day go a lot quicker.
One of the hardest parts about my job is staying calm when a customer gets angry or offended, but I have become quite good at it.
The most enjoyable part about my job? Probably meeting so many new faces and making their day that much more enjoyable.

A typical day at work would involve helping customers find the right sizes and colors for their suits. By working with sales experts and professional tailors and attending a workshop, I learned how suits are fitted and the skills needed to be an effective sales person. The management of the store was very chill and were always available to help whenever I needed them. Customer satisfaction was our main goal and the management was very open to any questions I had and would often help out with satisfying customers. The hardest part of the job was meeting sales targets, restocking items and dealing with customer returns as items that were tailored for customers could not be returned and yet some customers insist on us doing a rerun. Often during the day or after work we had to restock items and place them in their respective places which was very tiring and was time consuming because of the large number of items that we had to restock but was worth it because of the overtime pay. The most enjoyable part of the job were the Coffee breaks with co workers and chit chat with co workers in the work place.

I worked at Tip Top at the same time as I was in the military, and the manager that hired me (Who had been there for 7 years, and is by my estimate the best manager I have ever had.) was very flexible with her scheduling, ensuring that she did as much as she could to ensure I was financially secure. This was probably the highest point of this job, next to being able to dress formally. During my year throughout I found the district manager too friendly, invading my personal space all too often, and rather overbearing. The pay was fine starting out, but with discussion with fellow staff members I found that growth was impossible within the company, and I was likely to be fired or quit before I got a raise. The customers were just completely unpleasant, entitled, and cheap. All of these, coupled with the recent developments where they fired my hiring manager, and then decided to question me on my loyalty with every valid point I raised. I found this to be an assault on my honour, and an outright slap in the face. All in all, my time with the company has served to remind me that I had my best years while working at McDonalds.

A typical day at work is about 50/50, really. Either you're busy or you're not. When you're busy, the day goes by somewhat quickly, but not quick enough.

I've learned many things: people skills, how to do stock, working in a rush, trying to keep busy on a boring day. Those sort of things you pick up on pretty quick if it's all repetitive.

Management, in the store I work in, is great. Very understanding.

Co-workers can be alright. You have to get along with them otherwise doing your job will suck.

The hardest part of the job? Not being bored. When you've done everything (clean the store, making sure things are neat, doing the tasks needed) then trying to find something to do becomes a challenge.

The most enjoyable part of my job? Well, it all depends on the day. If you know how to make the day fun and enjoyable, you're gonna be excited to go back. If you go through the motions, it won't be fun. Working with customers is the easy part. Some make you light and happy, others don't. But you learn from it and make yourself better from your mistake with making a customer mad by mistake.

As much as most companies try to keep upper Management, away from every day staff, Tip Top was the exactly the reverse from anyone having contact to HEAD office Staff you had any company event local or national you where able to invite any Management level including the President CEO, Board of Directors,and in most cases at least one or all came.
Where in most cases any discipline actions where one level down to another Tip Top had what was called the open door policy, and made sure all employees new they could use it and that no one could block it usage and those that did would have bigger problems than the person using it. This is what kept the company union free and gave all employees that their concern was heard even if the end result was that the discipline action did not change, made working there the feeling of family.

a typical day at Tip Top Tailors consists of receiving  and documenting shipments.  Maintaining the store, and making sure it is set up in accordance with head office directives.  Hiring and training of staff.  Coaching staff on product knowledge, and weekly statistics.  Keeping the tailoring department running smoothly and not over budget.  What I have learned during my time with Tip Top, is how the Rental business works and rums, how to read margin reports, and how to say within my budget restrictions.  The hardest part of the  job is dealing with the uncontrollable aspects of the rental business.  However dealing with the rental side of my business is at the same time my most enjoyable part of my job.  Being a part of peoples special days.

I worked here for years, at different locations, different managers. You have to dress up. Even if it’s 30+ in the middle of summer. Full suit and tie if you’re male. There is no opportunity for advancement. Nothing more than minimum wage. If it’s during a very slow time of the year for sales, you will be berated and constantly scolded for not making sales targets. Even written up and loss of hours. Even if you get maybe less than 7 customers in the store on a slow day, you have to make the insane sales targets, no excuse. There is little to no understanding for anything. Majority of the customer base is the Muslim/African communities so the language barrier is tough. If they want you out of the company but can’t fire you they will starve you for work hours until you have to quit. I’ve seen this done multiple times. 

Training resources are a little lacking.
Compensation is fair, but not great if your endeavors are greater than the position you're in.

Honestly, this company is going through a good shift, especially with staffing in which it cycles in new bridge gappers.

Buying team misses opportunities, but I'm sure I'll change that one day.
CEO is textbook social engineer for middle aged managers, very effective and welcoming--I found his work aspirational.

TipTop in a retail store and it's consumer image ethics will instill principles to can.
compensation is fair but not great, serious lack of advancement once store manager. There's no bridge from store to corporate for the people who want to advance.
