Tofino Resort + Marina

Working conditions were absolutely insane! This so-called “resort” is nothing but an expensive roadside motel with an inexperienced president / owner at the helm who Forbes described as a "hard-nosed, stay-at-home blueliner known for his extra-long stick, bruising bodychecks and strong leadership instincts," and two-time Stanley Cup winner (any relevance to hotel management remains unclear to me). The revolving door of staff, including managers, is well known in the town. My own experience included observing 1) another Guest Services Agent being dismissed under questionable circumstances and means, and 2) the Guest Services Manager (my supervisor who hired me) vacating the position, without notice, within days of me starting the job, again, under rumours of impossible Company circumstances. Both serious "red flags"! Further "red flags" included accounts of the President's less-than-savoury behaviour towards young female staff members; details of which I am omitting from this review. 

My new supervisor was the Housekeeping Manager who I can describe as a process, not people manager; she did not like me. The operational norm was meant to have at least two guest service agents on duty for at least the check-in and check-out parts of the day. With only three of us employees left to staff Guest Services 17 hours a day, seven days a week, we did our best to come together to support each other. Our efforts were not recognized or appreciated. Due to the aforementioned revolving door of staff, I was forced to work solo after barely completing something that sort of resembled training. Shifts are filled with multitasking phones, emails, check-ins, trying to assist (usually angry) guests, and front desk (COVID related) upkeep tasks. During solo shifts, most of the time was spent juggling these tasks: Being in the middle of a call while an angry guest shows up to the desk demanding something be fixed, then a priority email from the president would arrive directing Guest Services to book rooms for his VIP friends. Again, management nowhere for support. Despite all of this, I received a lovely customer commendation. 

Notwithstanding, I was (thankfully) dismissed without cause after two weeks; although I had already planned my departure. But, the Housekeeping Manager and President made sure to call me in at 9:00am on my day off just to let me go. Ironically, this was the first time I had ever met the President, formally or informally. 

In summary: As a Guest Services Agent, I was left hung out to dry.

The Company is problematic on many levels. Motel style rooms range from $300 to $400 per night (plus taxes). On entering the “resort,” many guests were rightly angry that the actual property wasn’t reflected whatsoever on the website—blatant misrepresentation was a common complaint by guests. On getting into their rooms guests, again, frequently complained that there was no view of the ocean (as suggested on the website), they were put in the wrong class of room (I never really figure this one out), the TV or phone didn’t work, the room had a funny odor or was missing some standard amenity such as towels, toilet paper, etc. Who bore the brunt of guest anger? Guest Services. Support from management? None.

Onsite staff accommodations are dilapidated ATCO work camp trailers and should not be considered fit for human habitation. In addition to contending with mould, mildew and general filth, the amount of drinking and (hard) drugs that went on by residents/staff members, which the HR Manager turned a blind eye to, was also ridiculous. The septic system was also problematic, filling the building with the smell of human waste. Other serious concerns included no fire alarms or suppression, a lack of exterior lighting or security, light fixtures hanging by the wires, no ventilation. Rent is $200 biweekly. The whole thing was just simply disgusting! How is it okay to treat people like this? 

Jobs with accommodations are hard to come by in Tofino. This place isn’t worth the personal compromises just to be in Tofino.

NB: Knowledge of my review has gotten back to the Company and there are efforts to intimidate me, "black list" me (I'm unclear from what), and even label this review as "racist". I have based this review on my personal experiences and observations. The opinions expressed in this piece are, of course, my own. I am not a disgruntled ex-employee. I do, however, feel its important for potential candidates to have access to information prior to making their own decision on working with this Company.

Really great hiring process, very thorough. Had 2 interviews, they checked all my references, got an offer, and negotiated it all in less than 2 weeks, and the onboarding + orientation was really detailed and helpful. By the time I actually got to Tofino, I felt like I had already been working here because of how smooth and all-encompassing the onboarding was. HR was so great at making me feel comfortable coming in staff housing and communication was 10/10. Work culture is great, everyone is supportive, flexible, understanding and fun to be around. Leadership/senior team is 10/10. The staff accommodation is 10/10 (i can only speak on behalf of senior/management team accom - never seen the others). Adapted into the work environment really smoothly, and have a great relationship with everyone here. 10/10 recommend working here. the seasonal staff look like they have the best time ever.

I had the privilege of working for Tofino Resort and Marina as a summer co-op employee and I can say that it was one of the best learning experiences i had! The team and management provided me with  support, encouragement and trust. I really enjoyed my time there as a Guest Services Agent and felt like I was able to develop my skills in the customer service industry.

 It was also great to see what a real management team looked like with their professionalism and their approach  with guest and staff

I encourage anyone who is thinking of applying to do so. It was a pleasure working there and I most definitely am exited to see what the future holds for this company.

Tofino Resort + Marina has grown significantly since its conception in 2017. With a recent ownership change in 2022, the company has done a complete 180 on improving employee satisfaction and company culture. 

I have been delighted to be part of the team for 4 years- starting out as an hourly employee who was given multiple opportunities to develop my career to management. Professional development and mentorship are available at all levels in all departments, as well as incredible networking opportunities for marine and hospitality industries. 

The company offers amazing benefits for full-time employees. Management team is accessible and relatable. Office view is unbeatable!

Whether its a summer job or a long term career, Tofino Resort + Marina is a great place to work. 

Being a dockhand at Trm is a fun job. You meet lots of cool people and get to experience  so many cool things in tofino. Sometimes the communication isn’t great between management and expectations and goals need to be expressed better between management and employees. The pay also needs to be improved if they expect to keep staff for longer periods of time. Day to day can be really fun and a great networking opportunities. 

Days can be very busy with managing multiple different sales points and areas of the marina (e.g tours, flights, moorage, retail and gym) I have learned a lot and I think management are all very lovely and down to earth people. Sometimes it can be disorganized and there can be a lack of communication but overall they are good to work with.  The team is always lovely (from working two different seasons) and the culture is very friendly and inclusive. I love doing the sea plane flights and I love the wildlife we get to see on the job.

As an adventure host you are the face of the company, booking people on tours and helping with annual and transient moorage guests! You also get to cross train on dock hand duties as well, including catching Harbor Air planes, catching vessels, handling fish processing, and more. Besides selling tours, we also sell a lot of merchandise and hand cash. We also run the Tuff-fit gym!

A very negative & toxic place to work. Extremely high turn over rate. Staff are often treated poorly. All good staff either quite or get let go for standing up for themselves and making sure everything is taken care of. Nobody cares in management. Frequently felt belittled and all concerns were never taken care of. Guests often complained about false advertising. Pretty bad silver fish issue in the restaurant that I often brought up, but was ignored. Almost failed health inspection. But still nothing done about it.

Outside hiring does not motivate or encourage professional growth, questionable ethics at best, no room for professional development, arbitrary senior manangement policies. Standard Tofino practises but enjoyed working with great frontline people. 

TRM is a fabulous place to work. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. The company is very organized from top to bottom and management is very approachable if the staff have any issues. For a young person away from home, TRM is a great employer. All the bad reviews you read are from years past and a lot has changed since then. It is unfortunate such old reviews stay on permanently when all of the issues have been addressed.
