Toronto Hydro Electric System

Toronto Hydro is an excellent training grounds for Students, Interns and new graduates alike.  Do not plan to stay there for long since there is a strong lack of career and training development opportunity for staff (especially if one is not on the engineering side of the house).

Their treatment of their employees leaves a bitter taste in one's mouth. 

The management is not interested in understanding the direction and provide no real direction for the future of the organization.  They are only interested in looking the best in front of their peers and their higher-ups.  Promotions appear to be run on a popularity contest and whether the person is favoured or listened to by Management.

Standard and optional employment practices such as the ability to work from home are not available and will not be entertained or accommodate for employees.  If one works from home be prepared not to be compensated for your dedication to get things done.  The salary ranges are definitely below par but they want top tier talent.  

Staff is friendly (depending on the area) but there appears to be a high turnover rate in all areas.  Staff that have retired from the organization appears to come back as independent consultants for the company. 

The company lacks a bit of vision and is out of touch with current employment practices and standards.  Their treatment of staff (both permanent and temporary) could be strongly improved.

Colleagues and management are stressed out most of the time trying to please upper and executive management. Department budgets are tight and job security is not guaranteed - you’re only as good as your last success. 

Salary is not competitive but what is lacking here they try to make up for in benefits which doesn’t fully benefit employees until they retire and is not worth tolerating the environment to get there.

By far the greatest place I have ever had the pleasure of working. I was fortunate to work with amazing colleagues, both in my department and several others over the course of my time at Toronto Hydro. The team was smaller in size but had tremendous talent. I would highly recommend working for Toronto Hydro if ever given the opportunity. Great benefits and great pension planning if you are fulltime.

If your not looking to move up the ladder then this is ok.  If you have a career path in mind it is very slow, the prevalent feeling is you have to 'pay your dues'.  Management doesn't provide much autonomy & people are treated like if you don't watch them they will not do their jobs.  Not a lot of trust. Leadership is not always aligned resulting in constant changing of priorities which is hard.  Compensation & benefits are quite good, and locations are pretty convenient.

My time at Toronto Hydro has provided me with a great deal of personal and professional growth which I am most grateful for.
The workplace culture was wonderful...and I was lucky to work with a multitude of caring people.  The management was great, and always willing to allow employees to participate in opportunities for growth and advancement.

A good portion of my day was spent with claims staff, reviewing difficult files and providing advice on how to proceed.  Using computerized systems to extract information and prepare updates for Senior management

All that matters is KPI's as long as you make your numbers you are good as gold. Long calls will cause a visit to your desk to see if all is ok, if you are in the call center. If you are in other departments you MUST meet your numbers or your review will not be favorable. 

Was an incredible learning experience for a student worker. The full time employees have all worked there for a very long time and are quite knowledge able. The big problem I had with working there is the lack of collaboration.

Used to be an amazing company way back. Now it is really hard for keeping employees to stay… sad but nothing you can do.if you want work and life balance. Please find somewhere else.
