Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre

As most people know, the Pan am Center is a place where you can pretty much do anything relating to sports. From swimming, to an indoor track and basketball court, this place has everything. I liked volunteering there since I am an active person myself but, I also liked it because of the positive space and environment that was there as well. Everyone worked as a team to get the job done, and helped others when needed. The hardest part for me during the experience was finding where I needed to be, since the facility is big and the distance to walk from one place to another wasn't that easy either especially when you have to carry equipment. What I did learn from this experience was leadership and cooperation. Being in a large group really made be understand what it's like to be in a team, and learn to work together to get the job done faster. The most enjoyable part for me was the interaction with people. Meeting and greeting people was nice. It made the environment more friendly and more open to others which I liked a lot.

Two people, Me and my coworker worked on a seasonal job. When the contract was due to end, a maintenance position appeared, for which we both applied. After that, the second position also became vacant. As a person with 12 years of experience, I thought that they would definitely give me a chance and keep me. There was a lot of hope in the conversation with them, but this did not happen. Although there were two vacant positions, they hired the second seasonal colleague and not me. Unfortunately, I was very stressed because of this fact, because I had high hopes that they would keep someone with my experience. I worked quite hard and unfortunately I was not appreciated, at least that's how I think. Anyway, thanks to them and good luck

Typical day of work is always fun with a lot of new things to learn. I myself love my work. I do a lot of dancing in my free time so I enjoy my work very much. I love to teach students about my passion. Through this experience, I learned that I can always be better. I can develop my teaching style better to help my students further understand the fundamentals of the dance. Management is nice. I have no complains about management. The co-workers are extremely friendly. I believe the hardest part of the job to get everyone to listen to me when I teach the class. Sometimes, my students just do not listen. The most enjoyable part of class is the teaching itself. I am very passionate about Latin dancing. I love teaching others about my passion

Not a bad place to work if you're a student who just wants an easy part-time job. 

Management is AWFUL here.  There is apparent nepotism (*ahem*, certain people getting jobs because of their connections to other aquatic staff). They also criticise you on your NL skills, even though some other "favoured" staff can barely perform basic lifesaving kicks. It really is all about being on their good side. 

Other than that, having access to the facility and the benefits is pretty good. Some of the lifeguards are friendly, but a lot of them are snarky and annoying. 

Overall, good for starting out, but not worth the toxic environment. The starting pay is also kinda bad- 19 an hour, while city of toronto pays their guards 21. I work there now and I am way happier. 


So much micromanagement, if you are om your 3 month probation don't take any extra shifts, if you want to keep this job. Best hours of work is 4/5-10pm or overnight shift. Staff are super cool, or where and it is a lot of work at nights but a nice time spend with coworkers. 2-7 shifts are crazy busy. And 4am shifts were never for me. You do get to use the gym and rock climbing wall. And get a discount on personal training. Keep things professional, and if something happens like an incident just do something. Everyone works very well together. And they will have your back. 

 I worked as a Lifeguard in the Aquatics department. Its not an original lifeguard job its pretty extensive due to the High performance teams that attend practices at the facility multiple hours of the day. You will surely get to know people very well from day one. Be prepared to work really hard with a lot of part time hours. The staff are really great throughout the facility and are extremely helpful and sociable. The teams that attend the facility are quite inspiring - from the Athletes, Coaches etc. 

Having been at TPASC since its opening, I have seen the organization and facility evolve. Yes, it's a difficult place to work because there are so many people and events. Yes, it's tough balancing students, community and HP. But in the end it's a very rewarding place. There are many fitness facilities that one can work at and simply do the bare minimum. At TPASC, there is an expectation of excellence. It may not be for everyone, but those that it is for reap the rewards of getting to do something very unique.

There was a lot of downtime during the day shifts, but it typically picked up towards the evening hours. As a field house attendant, there were few opportunities for advancement in the company. However, there were a few benefits, such as free access to the fitness center, Olympic sized swimming pool, and the gymnasium. Hosting provincial and national sporting events was another perk as well. It's the ideal part-time job for the sports enthusiast.

Management picked favourites, lack of culture, catty girls in aquatics.

The pressure to always be on and available.  Constantly short staffed 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It started out as a great and I loved working there then turned into a very toxic environment

I worked there as a Building Operator the Building manager have no clue how to schedule his/her Building operator too many Asst. Managers and some of the operators/maintenance are not capable of performing the job. they need to change how they run this place too much politics and they love to point fingers instead of fixing the problem together. "NO TEAM WORK'
