Toronto Youth Job Corps

Typical day at work would start as our team setting out the tools that we will be working with that current day. The jobs involved in this role were cleaning, taping, edging and painting. The tasks for the jobs were demonstrated, practiced and performed. Days at the office were workshop days, that involved topics based on employment and various conversations. What I learned through my experience through the program were different techniques and strategies within the paint-site, valuable skills, and a personal perspective of a workplace and how everything in the workplace is managed and functioned. Management was complicating at most, but the motivation and initiative is what allows a day to become a better one.. The program had be a positive, an exciting and a productive choice I had made. Another note I would like to add is that the culture of the workplace is diverse, united, very helpful and it truly creates a great atmosphere for all to be welcomed. The difficult parts of the job for majority of the program, had been the traffic and weather, and most days the tasks at the paint-site had overwhelmed most participants, but we engaged and found solutions to defuse any conflicts and/or addressed concerns. The most enjoyable parts of the job and program, were that the participants and the instructors were very energized, well-paced, and the everyone had important questions that were asked, I had learned more than expected, and I highly would recommend this program.

Upon arrival at the apartment building (job site) I got to meet
the tenants as they were such welcoming people. They really
appreciated the fact that a bunch of young adults were renovating
their halls and stairwells by painting them new bright colors. We
even did some mudding and plastering.

Honestly I am quite the loner and tend to take the lead a lot
of the time on the work site. Here I've learned to work better
as a team and take the time to appreciate other co-workers
wants and needs and it make sure we get the job done as
quickly and properly as possible.

Management was awesome. My supervisor taught me well
in how to paint & mud the right way and not to do certain things.
There was also pizza day and they took us on trips.

My colleagues all had the same common goal in mind; get the
job done right. The mentality and us working in proper work
stations ensured a happy boss and tenants.

The hardest part of it all was when we were all finished with
renovating the apartment building. It was tough leaving all those
nice people, but most of all I love renovating and it was hard
to stop because I could really do it all day. I'm very passionate
about Renovating or Construction in general.

The people and the work was the best part.

A typical day would be like we stared at 9am until 5pm I personal enjoyed very single minute of it. I have learned a lot when i was there I enjoyed the people that i worked with and they were all really friendly and fun to be with. i loved going into work very morning. i think the management was great and as well as people there.

They taught us valuable life skills we would need to have when entering the work force. They gave a lot of positive advice and made sure I was comfortable in the office and at my placement. They checked up on me at my placement and did their best to help me with whatever I needed. I would recommend this program to anyone.

A great group of people, always willing to help if needed. Highly recommend. The co workers are willing to work well with one another, I learned to make goals for myself and to actually go through with those goals in order to achieve something good in life.

A typical day for me is usually one whereby I use the time at work to learn something new including how did I managed my day's task. The workplace culture is great because there are expectations and ways to do things to help promote a happy, safe and productive workplace environment.

It was great getting the job experience needed to find a job. Participated in life skills pertaining to employ-ability topics such as Health & Safety, Employment Standards, Procedures to follow for Work Place Harassment, Communication, Trades & Apprenticeships etc.

TYJC was an amazing job program. I was in my mid teen years while I was there and was nervous about going through with it but they made me feel comfortable. A very warm and welcoming environment and overall an amazing experience.

it was a good learning experience i learned many new skills the people at the job helped in many different ways and overall i took a lot from the job including experience

This Program is very helpful. The staff is very helpful too.
management is nice.

the most enjoyable part about the job is the fact that you have an opportunity to get a job anywhere you want.
