Job was very secure until the transition from coal to gas

It was very important to complete Shutdowns on time and on budget

Very stressful now because of units being retired

I no longer work for TransAlta

The job is exactly what I want. I love working with water and troubleshooting issues. I love working as part of a competent team. And loved working Monday to Friday and having more time with my Family. But it is quickly changing.
I have learned many things while commissioning. A wonderful opportunity to work with many different companies and people. I have learned many lab management skills and hope to use these in future endeavors.

TA needs to catch up with other larger corporations when it comes to pay, vacation, pension/savings plan etc.
Safety culture also needs improvement, it’s not horrible but management needs to be schooled on OHS regs. 
Upper management is totally out of touch with Maint/Operations. Zero accountability for project management and have never seen a project properly completed...always a gong show.

Being a Utility company and having got to see the in and out of the Boiler parts while carrying out procurement for the Maintenance.

It really enhanced by learnings of the requirements which helped carry out the job more efficiently.

Most people when hired at TransAlta would make it their career job, some 30+ years. I had 29+ years before retirement. Not sure of opportunities now as many are being retired because of coal to gas conversion.

Lots of opportunities for advancement. They are always looking for the next leader. The work environment challenges you, but makes you a better employee and shows you that you can do more than you thought.

My experience at TransAlta was great overall, there was a point where I almost left due to the Supervisory style of my boss but I hung in.  I was at this company for almost 30 years and the people I worked with over this time were great.

Good place to get experience. Fast pace environment and wide array of different projects to get a experience.
Good safety culture, safety is number one priority.

Going through a transition that is unplanned and under managed.  Plan for the company to get out of coal is sound due to the instability created by our current government.  Management team is solid but unsupported.

Great training and Salaries for Full-time employees until re-org. ongoing.
Seasonal role, provides low wage and no Benefits or opportunity for Full-time growth.
