Traverse Independence

Typical day at work:
-Mostly flexible hours (can range between little hours to too many), occasionally will be asked for a fixed shift with no room for negotiation. Typical hours would be from Monday to Friday, but expect weekends from time to time.
-Almost everyday is different. Great for those who are good at adapting on the spot and have advanced skills in problem solving.
-Lots of socialization with client's and those involved in their care. 
-Get comfortable with being on the road and working on the road. Your vehicle is your break room, lunch room, and office. 

Gained experience from work:
-Though it was an independent work environment, reach out to colleagues in the same position. Many were more than happy to provide advice and assistance when asked.
-A lot of practical skills and knowledge gained from active work. The job involves assisting many people of different disorders/illnesses/disabilities, ages, cultures, and walks of life. Everyday was a learning experience on how to respect people of all kinds of backgrounds and how to provide personalized help.
-You learn a lot, at a fast pace. Most of the time, not because you want to but because you have to. Fast learners would thrive in this environment and the amount of useful community information and resources can be very helpful not just for work but also personally.

Management:
-Unfortunately, lack of management assistance and structure. Some are very helpful, if and when they are available. 
-Many in management positions delegate their work to those in lower positions, mostly due to the increased workload they are likely facing caused by the understaffing issues. Expect to assist management so that your own job can be accomplished. 
-Management staff are not your friends but are not actively trying to be your enemy. Have compassion but also do not let yourself be overworked beyond your job duties. Be firm about your limitations and management will most likely respect it.

Workplace culture:
-Overall, neutral. Many are helpful, if you manage to see them in such an independent workstyle. No one was overtly disrespectful. It was obvious that everyone was just trying to do their job the best way they knew how. Notably, there were few that went out of their way to provide as much help to others as they could. They however, seemed the most burnt out.

Hardest part of the job:
-Work-life balance. It does take a lot of trial and error to develop a good work-life balance on this job. 
-Boundaries. Make boundaries and follow them. Do not work past your maximum hours. Do not work without compensation. Do not work more than what your duties entail. It is very easy to forget to take your lunch break or a break in general when working. Set reminders.
-Know your mental health limits and speak up when help is needed. There are resources within the organization and management can provide their assistance, but you must speak up. The job can be very mentally exhausting at times.
-It is unionized, but not a great one. 

Most enjoyable parts of the job:
-It is genuinely fulfilling if you aspire to have a career in helping others in the community setting. All the clients' on the job have unique and occasionally, unfortunate backgrounds, and the help they will receive can be life changing. Many will not let you forget it. 
-Many working in the same position or similar positions have congruent beliefs as the above mentioned. 
-A decent way to get into the community service field. 

I had the lucky opportunity to fill in a temporary position at head office as an administrative assistant. I was pleasantly surprised to see how welcoming everyone was despite the fact that I was very new there. I was working more closely with the people in the Intake department. They explained to me everything I needed to know and always made me feel like I could go to them if I needed extra support/clarification.  As for the position I was filling in I did not find it too challenging as I have past admin experience thus, it was easy to pick up on the tasks. I also had someone train me for a couple of weeks or so on all the tasks I would need to do and the things I would need to keep in mind while completing the tasks. I would be the main one entering and organizing the client files but I never felt overwhelmed as I wasn't bombarded with all the tasks at once. The rest of the staff at head office were just as kind and supportive towards me especially, when I had a question they would jump right away to help me. The staff would always ask me how I was doing every time they walked by my office and made sure I was doing well. Overall, I am very thankful to have been involved with Traverse as they are very hard working people and very supportive of each other. A work environment that I would love to be a part of again!

Don’t work here. Leadership comes from the top & there is no leadership AT ALL here. The managers , The Board and the CEO only care about themselves. There is 0 employee appreciation and the blame is always on you. They promote people who don’t deserve it. They don’t care about their staff and clients . If there are any good reviews on here it is most likely from management because everyone who works here hates it. They lie to employees, don’t manage your vacation properly, and praise those who don’t deserve it.  Management gets away with whatever they want- even lying. Employees are quitting all the time and they never have coverage. They have lost many great employees.  Do not stress yourself out and work here. It is not worth it. This is an honest review. Oh and don’t bother complaining about anything as body cares.

The frontline employees at TI are wonderful, friendly, skilled individuals. There is great teamwork and always a welcome atmosphere for anyone new or visiting. The clients are wonderful people and many have been there for years. The work is rewarding, though often very fast-paced and hectic. HOWEVER, working with management (mainly HR and their head office) is nonsense. They really do care more about money than their clients, and definitely care more about filling shifts than the well-being of their employees. They are the kind of management team that will constantly say “we’ll look into that” and never follow through.

I know a few people who work at Traverse, and I would never want to be a client there!!! The staff that I know are honest and hard working, and truly like working with people.

Too often the clients are bearing the brunt of things. Long-term employees shove the grunge work on the others.  Management definitely favours certain employees and they get away with doing minimal work.It's all about the mighty dollar, not about the care at all.

They have a high turnover of staff. The pay is excellent which entices new people, but the overall environment is not good for either the employees or the clients

Traverse Independence has wonderful clients. There are some good staff who try hard but because of management it's always short-staffed and the staff and clients suffer. The hiring process is lacking which lets in staff who are not client-centered and don't work as a team.  The staff who are good and are client centered end up leaving as its hard to work for a company who doesnt put clients or staff on their list of priorities. I would not recommend Traverse Independence for any client friend or family member nor any worker wanting to build a career long term.

Terrible place to work.

There are good things about working for Traverse. The staff is friendly and always helpful to anyone new or training. Clients are friendly. That being said, staff often goes entire shifts without sitting down or even eating because they are so busy. Anyone that could change that and add another line or change schedules doesn’t listen or try. Part time staff are scheduled for days on end with no weekends off for months. Any concerns about clients well being will be chuffed off by management. It can be very frustrating.

It starts off feeling and looking like a great company to work for , then you see more and more shifts , hours, funding , outings, services being cut and the overall quality of life being slowly taken away from the clients. The company prides themselves on excellent services but often cuts staffing causing more workload and stress on staff. Management does paperwork all day and has no idea about actual client care. Guess this is typical with most care companies unfortunately.

The persisting challenges of limited career growth opportunities and consistent understaffing at [Company] can profoundly impact mental health. The stress resulting from overwhelming workloads, compounded by the frustration of stagnant career prospects, can lead to increased levels of anxiety, burnout, and diminished job satisfaction among employees. Addressing these issues is crucial not only for improving the workplace environment but also for safeguarding the mental well-being of the staff

There was little to none in the job training. The coordinator didn’t know what she was doing and was very unorganized. There was so much unnecessary trainings. They expected you to do lot of work not getting paid for it. They don’t give you vacation for 1 year as part time. The pay is very low for expected work. The CF role is so unorganized and you do too much work for little to no compensation. You are expected to attend useless staff meetings every month. Don’t waste your time not worth the headache of management
