This review is directly for the Trent Durham Library and Learning Centre. As a former student library ambassador here is a review of my experience;

Was working in the Library a good environment to gain experience? Yes! Were the staff trustworthy, understanding and supportive? Not really. 

First of all, the library management failed to provide thorough training and instructions on the job. 

Library Management was very poor in perception of others. They fail to understand the diversity of conveying different skills and abilities to the workplace. They also fail to realize that people learn and work at different paces. Displayed favouritism towards employees and other student library ambassadors who had similar personalities to them. They are very like-minded people.

They are always stuck in the back of the library for most of the day wearing headphones, on their cellphones, hide and lock themselves in their offices, eating food and gaffing with other employees who work outside of the library. Apparently they think it is okay to gossip behind your back and share personal information from confidential meetings. One time on the job, I simply asked the Library Manager for help and she dismissed me with an attitude. Not very approachable. 

They expect you to be 100% perfect even though you work very minimal hours (once a week) with very minimal training. Like this is a student position, an opportunity that encourages growth. We are not expected to be perfect or judged for who we are. Students are always deemed wrong regardless of their valid reasons. Very one-sided people. 

After my experience working for Trent Durham Library & Learning Centre, I vow to never step foot in their library or utilize their resources ever again. Additionally, I will never give the faculty recognition or support for their services since they have treated me very poorly as a student staff. 


I had the chance to work in a small but well organized Mathematics Department dedicated to the continuous development of the learning environment which by the programmes adopted, endeavoured the expansion of the employment opportunities for its graduates.
Every morning witnessed the presence on my desk of the memo note with the important upcoming departmental and university events. Mail and email check followed by a last review of the lesson plan were activities just before the first lecture or seminar-workshop class. Lunchtime in the cafeteria was always an occasion to informally reconnect with fellow teachers and students often sharing insights into our daily work. The time in between classes was filled with office hours for student help and guidance. The end of classes was followed by office work as replying to emails, providing student support through the Blackboard integrated learning environment
and insuring that the next day planning was up to date.
Teaching at Trent considerably improved my organisational and time management skills and enhanced my ability to teach mathematics to students from divers socio-economic backgrounds with different levels of prior education and learning styles.
I would say that the management was understaffed, the only secretary the Department had was serving in the Dept. of Economics as well, but her hard work and proactive attitude never occasioned any administrative slippage. The members of the Department proved to be outspoken and highly supportive with one another. I can't think of any hard part of my activity at Trent University, every duty being accomplished with joy and dedication.

As a student, Trent was a great place to work so that education and work happened at the same place. Work within the Chemistry Department was really fulfilling and helped me feel more integrated with my overall university experience. All the staff and supervisors were really friendly and encouraging. I gained relevant experience for any future chemistry positions I may pursue as well as connections. I loved that my jobs had immediate impact and importance to other students. The only "difficult part of the job was working around my class schedule to find available working times, however there is a lot of flexibility offered so it wasn't too bad.
I would definitely recommend working on campus to any Trent students.

I've been lucky to have amazing bosses and team members. Working in higher ed, in an academic department, has its pros and cons. 
Pros: fairly strong union, good pay (especially for the area, and to some degree compared to other universities), good team, really nice/collaborative people in other departments, beautiful campus.
Cons: big organization with multiple layers which can make things feel slow, bloated, or more complicated than necessary, it's a stressful time in post secondary due to budget constraints across the province, and contract (non-permanent) staff don't get the same benefits of the union in every way.

Overall: a good place to work with lots of stability and support.

Cons: Wage-Cuts, Strikes, Salary did not accurately reflect efforts/number of spent working hours.

As a Graduate Teaching Assistant with the Trent University Faculty, History Department, my primary role consisted of first-point-of-contact between undergraduate students and the instructor. Managed discussion groups, approved research proposals, Instructors gave more-or-less full autonomy over grading, editing, commentary, and assisting undergraduate students. Instructors were amenable, easy to contact, and built quick and long-lasting rapport with their assistants. My tenure as a GTA during COVID-19's worst restrictions aside, this University provides an excellent and well compensated TA experience.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working with the students and colleagues.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Navigating the complexities of organizational and managerial dynamics. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Not sure about the company as a whole and can only comment on my experiences working in counselling services.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Every day is a different day but managerial practices that are regressive remained constant.

Arrive, step onto line, start cooking, cook, cook, cook (very busy), restock line, clean line, prep, cook, cook, cook, punch out, go home.

Too much management can ruin a good thing.  

Slightly toxic, too much management, angry workers.  Unionized and always talk about the union and union rights etc.  Not a good situation.  Just a culture of animosity and misinformation.

Hardest part of the job was dealing with university students, who believed their status had elevated them to the level of all knowing.

The most enjoyable part of the job was when I no longer worked there.  Everyone went out of there way to complicate something really simple.

What is the best part of working at the company?
A very comfortable working environment. Diverse and comfortable place to work and grow. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I really do not know at all. It is not stressful, but it can be a bit challenging but in a good way.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It is a diverse and equitable working environment.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Interesting and fulfilling day every day.

What is the best part of working at the company?
A great teaching and learning experience. My boss was always there to guide me, help me, support me all the time. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Nothing was stressful and it was a very friendly. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Friendly, stress-free, joyous 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Start class at 9,have a 10 minutes break around 10 am, finish at 11:30, next class at 1 pm to 4 pm with a 10 minutes break in the middle.
