In Trican's generic job postings for administrative positions they write:

What Makes Us Attractive:
•Excellent base salary with one of the best benefit programs in the industry
•Long-term commitment, including a training and career development program
•Above-average career advancement opportunities

These where what drew me to the company. Benefits are very good the only truth the the above 3 statements. Base salary is average and is all the same regardless of your experience. I found out I was getting paid the same as the receptionist that had less than a year experience and I had over 8. They do not believe in giving raises (after three months, a year or even if you change to a position with more responsability eg. accounts payable to accounts recievable).
They do not let administrative staff go for training and they do not give you a timely performance review or have you set up in a career development program. The only "above-average career advancement opportunities" are if someone gets fed up before you do.
You will get 2 weeks vacation but you are not allowed to go on a two week vacation until you have been with the company for a year. You can go on a one week vacation after 6 months of service. Not a week before. They claim they are family friendly, not true, if you have kids, you better hope they never get sick or need you at any time between 8-5.
Expect to hear sexist remarks from Management.Expect your direct manager to blame everything on the Base Manager or Calgary. She will not support or fight for you. She is just a puppet.

Ladies I worked with were great.

Wishing I had known all of this before I started.

I spent 3 years with Trican as a Parts Person for Down Hole Tools. I was the only person working in teh Storeroom and had to do all tasks pertinent to operating a warehouse/storeroom. I looked after 5 geographical regions for downhole tools and as the workload increased so did the problems. It wasn't long before I discovered there was no opportunity for advancement as a Parts Person, my years of experience didn't matter, nor did my opinion about the operation of the Storeroom. Offers to change the operation were made but only meant more work for me to do, adding to the stress already present.
It's great place for advancement if you are a Coil Tubing Operator, Tool Technician, Frac Operator or any other Field position, but if you;re a supporting trade/position you can forget it. They hire outside people who are unqualified for management positions. Case in point - New Supply Chain Manager for Completions Systems and Downhole Tools is a Registered Engineering Technologist with no knowlege or experience in Supply Chain Management. Why would any company put someone in such a position with no knowledge/experience whatsoever?? The "old boys Club" mentality is still alive and doing fine in the oilfield.

Money is good but horrendous long hours. Benefits are the best I've seen but that's where it ends. This company laid off all their employees and cut their pay by up to 70%...then turns around and buys another frac company. The wages now have been cut in half and the bonuses are almost gone. This company made millions on the backs of hard working people but treated them like dirt when the market for oil went down. As far as i'm concerned they stole from their employees and after they were gone....bought another company...and carries on like its business as usual. A lot of people I know have left the company and many have quit because of the way they are treated. They rave about respect but give none to their employees. It was a good company back in the day but now I would rather live in a dumpster than work for these thieves. your choice...do your research.

Management up to base level was fantastic, most of my co-workers were great. Very happy about those people, and that's it. Pay has been cut, then cut again. They took away all extras and forced guys to sleep in their bunks with no amenities provided AND no pay for staying in the bunk. daily food allowance in a joke. Pay went from Good, to some of the worst in the oilfield. I understand times are tough and we all have to make sacrifices, but they expected everything to come out their field guy's pockets. Never a word on executive pay cuts where the real bloat is. 

TLDR; tower people padding their pockets at the expense of the rest of the company, don't care about workers, want them gone as they see them as an expense.

Our base was the best one running in my opinion due to the team lead's ability to help the newer guys not only get the job done but help us learn along the way. We weren't thrown right into the field jobs, rather they let us learn the equipment well enough beforehand before sending us out and even then the team lead Bill was ready to answer any question at any time you had. I cannot say much for other bases but I very much enjoyed my time here and it is unfortunate that due to the economy I had gotten laid off. The benefits here start as soon as you do so there is no worry if you or your family are needing something like medication. I would recommend this place to anyone you just need to have a bit of hard skin sometimes.

Trican was a great place for me to work for 5 years.  Because of my age and my children being grown up the away from home part was not as bad as if I had younger family.  I found working with my co-workers very interesting and entertaining since I was twice their age. The hardest part of the job was being away from home next to that would be driving the tractor trailer since I had no experience before coming to trican.  Definitely the feeling of accomplishment in a job well done was my most enjoyable part of the job but it was on very few occasions that someone from the company would specifically say anything directly to you.

This company has undergone and incredible amount of change. i can only imagine what the future holds for it.

- A typical day was never typical. a new problem always demanded attention.

- I learned how to survive and thrive in a ever changing climate and culture.

- Management was ever changing, for good and bad reasons.

- Workplace Culture was incredibly enjoyable. as a first time career job for myself it left me with a large amount of good experiences. I was able to work with some excellent people.

- The hardest part about this job was watching the company change as it did...

- the most enjoyable part was the freedom to explore and develop new ideas.

Worked as a pump operator in the Hinton base, people in set 1 are racist and discriminatory from the supervisor to the newest guy, , they preach about respect each other you never see that, they all play politics in there if they like you or hang out with senior hands you’ll get promoted, managers were good, benefits are good and when there is work money is good, long day 12 hrs on the field plus 2 hrs travel everyday,
It sucks to deal with silica sand all the time, specially sometimes you work around it and you are not required to wear a respirator. .

The company has been trying to move into a culture of coaching and mentoring. There are some key people that were excellent and thrived in this environment. While other long term employees/managers struggled. Definitely years of service pays dividends with this company as they covet their own. 

The company is in a better place coming through the downturn and will grow as an industry leader.

This job was a BLAST!
I don't think I have ever had so many laughs withs co-workers in my 15+ years in oil and gas. Great people from the office to field. I can honestly say I looked forward to going into work each day. 
If you have a positive attitude, admit to your mistakes and show up to work hard you will fit in just fine. 
However, like all other aspects of oil and gas, you can never be too sure when you will get laid off. That just comes with the nature of the industry. I would 100% go back when the industry picks up again.
