Trinity Village Care Centre

I worked at Trinity for several years. It was my first opportunity out of school and I was eager to enter the workforce and learn. I found out right away that there are a lot of cliques within the workplace and people aren't always willing to work together and help with tasks. Depending on what shift you work and what floor you're on, your workload will be vastly different. Some PSW's only do care on their own assigned residents, others will work together to make sure all cares are done. You're forced to wait forever for anyone to help you with lifts sometimes. I've also seen many staff do lifts alone or manually, which is unsafe for both the residents and the worker. I've worked alongside some hard working individuals, and I've also had to work alongside a lot of slackers and people who just didn't seem to know what they were doing. It baffled me how many PSW's went against what was taught about person centred care. There were a lot of shortages in staff, especially during the summertime and the holidays. I was often left working alone with individuals who had extreme behaviours and I didn't feel safe. Management did nothing about it when I addressed these issues of shortages and safety. Staff were blamed for the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, even though the facility itself was poorly equipped and precautions were taken too late. RPN's and RN's do not help out PSW's, even when they have to work alone on night shifts. There is little to no resident rights in the facility. Everyone is made to wake up, eat, bathe and sleep at the same time and whenever it is convenient for the PSW's schedule. Many longtime staff get burnout. Residents are miserable, complain about the facility as well as the lack of care they receive and are locked in the facility with little to no stimulation. There is lack of communication between management and the workers. Most staff feel unappreciated and overwhelmed with their workloads. There were too many times we didn't have incontinence products such as briefs, wipes or enough clean towels to do proper care. Trinity has gone through many Director of Resident Care positions in the last few years. All the previous directors belittled the PSWs, didn't listen to any concerns raised and often blamed PSWs for things out of their control. Staff are overwhelmed with getting tasks done: there is pressure to complete tasks because the following shift will complain if something is not done such as a bath or care when a resident refuses. Therefore, each shift feels like a production line at a manufacturing plant rather than caring for vulnerable individuals who require person centred care. Meal offerings to residents are abysmal, staff can be catty and lazy, unsafe working conditions, management does nothing to help staff or residents. There is no benefits offered to part-time staff, who sometimes have to take on full-time hours. Full-time lines were hard to attain until after the pandemic when everyone left due to being overworked and underappreciated. Now there's a high turn over rate. Honestly, I could go on and on. 

HR department is allowed maximum clearance to run the home and feel everyone should report to them even though the head of HR is never there, which goes to show that the ultimate in double standard is allowed,    HR team believes they should be consulted for everything and that they can treat staff any way they want to.   COO refuses to accept that the bulk of resignations are directly because of the bullying and mistreatment of the head of HR.   Employee moral and staff culture have plummeted and unrealistic work assignments that set you up for failure are the norm.   You have to stay long after your shift ends to make  sure that you get this insane workload done or you’ll be called in for discipline.   COO chooses to ignore the dozens and dozens of complaints and direct resignations by staff because of the HR departments skewed view that they are invincible and above the rules    COO would gain tremendous respect by firing the HR manager and taking time to sit with staff and create some sort of partnership moving forward   All in all they have lost amazing workers and even managers because of one person

Prioritized my work assignments according to deadlines and reprioritized with changing deadlines and priorities

Work assignments varied including data entry, training materials, policy and procedure manuals; resident, human resource, dietary, finance and accounting records; organizing minutes for different teams and departments, proofreading and filing.

Reception relief as needed. Answered phone, two way radio, paged personnel, logged sick calls and scheduling shift replacement, arranged travel for residents and family by taxi, OHIP records, keys log, visitor logs, booked tour requests, food vouchers, courier pick ups, housekeeping pickups, petty cash, collected money for various items for sale, kept track of meeting attendance records, sorted mail for residents and staff, watched for resident wanderers, opened front security door electronically for anyone in need including the funeral director and ambulance and any special requests by residents or family members.

It’s a good place to start working so as to get experience. The home is kept clean and residents are mostly friendly and respectful. Most staff who’ve worked there for years complained a lot, they were unhappy with administration. Lots of staff left for hospital jobs during the pandemic as they were offered better salaries and benefits. A bit of nepotism is clear with old staff bringing in their children to work at the company. New hires would do their orientation and never return because of how they were treated by a staff member or being overworked due to shifts being under staffed. During the pandemic, administration did not provide the support needed by registered staff. They would make DEMANDS and changes but never try and help unregulated staff to understand what they were expected to do which would inconvenience the residents and leave all the responsibilities to the registered staff. 

Trinity Village has succeeded because of its reputation. One that was built over decades of hard work by dedicated Frontline staff. Whether it was cook preparing the meals or the housekeepering cleaning the room or the PSW who made the resident look just right in the Sunday best. 

Sadly like many organizations it fell to stagnated management. People promoted into key roles because of years of service rather than years of knowledge. Trinity Village is a victim of old guard not recognizing that in this day and age working for a organization for 34 years isn't a badge of Honor it's a death cull, one which has rang out for this once amazing organization.  

Kudos to all who have stayed your dedication and perseverance is every present in the resident you care for. Winds of change will blow and there's always a chance of things getting better because they certainly couldn't get worse.

A decent workplace. I have been helping to care older residents. Sometime, if I am lucky, I  worked with some of VERY knowledgeable PSWs who have many years of direct bedside care experiences. They shown kindness and opening. They offered training to new staff or students on the job; They made my day smoothly. We worked together to get job done well. Sometime a RN/ RPN will helping out on the floor if we fall behind schedule. Inconsolably, due to frequently shortage staff, lead to work-overload. As result, under-staff and this lead to many great skillful PSWs finding better pay position to somewhere else. 

A typical day at work used to be quite intense physically and mentally. Our residents had to be helped right away upon their call bell. Their meals had to be served at strict times. The equipment (lifts) had to be monitored for safe functioning. I learned to organize my tasks during my shift. I learned better time management. My co-workers were always nice, polite, friendly and ready to help. The hardest part of my job was turning and washing heavy residents. Mentally it was always painful to see these old and ill people being upset or sick. However it was enjoyable to see their smiles and to smile back, to say some kind words to my residents and to provide some comfort to them.

I really enjoyed working as a Personal Support Worker on the floor and also as a bath nurse. Once I start my shift I barely stop except for break time. I learned and improved my time management skills and the importance and practice of working as a team. I worked with a great team of people and had some wonderful clients that I loved to chat with and put a smile on their faces.
