A typical day at work would either be working out with a personal trainer, playing competitive sports, or learning how to cook healthy
meals. The duration of these activities go on for six hours and we worked five days a week. I learned about how to keep your body in healthy shape. The management was very outgoing, fun, easy to get along with, and is very flexible with your situations. My co-workers were also very fun, easy to get along with, wasn't stuck up. There wasnt really a hard part in the job but the harder part of the job is keeping up with the excercises and any sort of physical activity as it was challenging over a period of time. I enjoyed everything from cooking, working out, the co-workers, the managers, and learning how to cooks healthy meals.

Biases at the board level do not allow for other voices of reason within the organization to be heard. Too many hidden agendas at high levels causing the organization to plummet. Staff value is not measured by performance and skill but rather who you are connected with internally. For this reason, it is difficult attracting  talent with skill sets that can take Tropicana to the next level.

More important, this organization in a severe financial crises and has had to reduce staffing in 2024 | 2025. They are now severely understaffed and the pay does not match the workload. 

Do not be blinded by the optics. What happens on the inside is far from what is seen externally!

●	Direct daily functions for summer camp dedicated to creating engaging recreational opportunities for children
●	Design and implement weekly schedule, activities, and programming for camp group.
●	Organize and lead small and large group activities such as crafts, nature, songs, games, swimming, archery, canoeing, family night, and opening and closing ceremonies
●	Communicate with parents regarding participant experiences and expectations
●	Maintain accurate program records, including incident reports, logs, and daily attendance reports
●	Assisted to setup and tear down activities, guiding campers to and from classes, and reinforcing camp and program rules and regulations

The environment was safe and enjoyable because the co-workers were hardworking ; sociable and team work. The hardest job was when we had to organize the events and we had to choose a location for the games. We also had to call the kids "reminder" but some kids could give us the wrong information like phone  numbers or home address.  What I  learned is that working with youth/kids you have to be patience with them which takes time, determined, detail-oriented   and time management because of the events but all in all it was a learning experience

A typical day at the Tropicana community service would include greeting and marking customer names by the entrance. Then, go meet with my boss and plan important events occurring in the future. Help and assist customers with anything they need and start managing the place. This includes putting items in certain rooms (to get ready for events), cleaning up the area, etc. I've learned my things, the main thing I've gotten from this experience was that planning, being on time, and customer value are extremely important.

Senior Management is hands off and they do not micromanage, allow job developers and Counsellors to work. Downside- Management need to supervise more. Job developers and Counsellors have 15-20+years working there, are entitled, lazy and not willing to get current skills. Management need to review, train and/or  change job developers and Counsellors when they are not competitive.

They give you no resources, no funding, no aid, no foundation and are quick to throw you under the bus when things fall apart but the most rewarding parts are the children you get to reach. Would only recommend to some crazy altruistic to work here however, if you're looking for a job with access to do something incredibly meaningful for kids who otherwise wouldn't have certain opportunities... this is it.

As a student intern, there were very little opportunities to gain direct and relevant client experience. There was a lack of effort to promote belonging among students. Some staff were supportive and kind. However, others were rude and would rarely acknowledge you. There is a lot of disorganization at Tropicana, last minute changes, etc. As a student, I don’t recommend doing your placement here. You will learn so much more elsewhere.

Was working with youth and having them want to open up and ask questions

Tropicana Community Services is a great job for any young individual looking for valuable office experience. As a junior facilitator, I was responsible for handling all needed information to ensure that youths had access to quality summer jobs. Prospective workers will learn interpersonal skills, planning, organization, and practice collaborating with team members.
