UPPER GRAND DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

Joined the educational crew to modify studies and teach at different levels for diverse students. Was trained to facilitate learning for children with varying syndromes and disabilities.

The job description has now completely changed. We solely deal with children's behaviour. Runners, non compliant children, biters, violent and aggressive students of every age. Our hands are tied as we have to follow the instructions of people who make up and hand down theories of behaviour changes WITHOUT actually working in the classes or testing them first. 

With the budget cuts and even before, we were understaffed and running from one "fire" to another, instead of supplying the support needed to help keep the sparks from igniting in the first place. (as we were taught)

Up side - School staff, for the most part, work as a team/family.

Hardest part of the job - not having a say in the plans for the children you work with daily.

Most enjoyable part - The days when the stars align, and you get each child to catch a glimpse of what a great day with friends and learning can look like. The days when they seem to understand that we are there to help them. The days when they say, "Thank you for teaching me that", and they feel a sense of pride in their own growth and journey.

Everyday started with morning announcements which were often entertaining and on the positive, motivational side. 
I learned that we all are unique and we learn in extremely different ways. Recognizing that learning was a 3D project in the making, I began to reformat my information sharing skills.  It became obvious that whatever might have worked well for some, did not always work for others. Getting to know each student on a one to one and clicking with their learning curve was a success in the making for each of us. 
The most difficult part of my job, was that the day flew by. Never enough hours, and always anticipating the 'tomorrow'' to make it better than all the days before.
Most enjoyable part of the job was to discover a new course related to student challenges and being able to add it to a P.A. day.  
Also, enjoyed. meeting new students, and welcoming each fresh new year as a new challenge with endless possibilities.

A typical work day would be going in before noon and helping out around the classroom with the two classes. This would often involve answering questions related to course material, creating worksheets, assignments, and test questions, and teaching course concepts. My co-worker was always incredibly friendly and helpful and offered pointers and advice often. I learned how to present information in different ways so everyone can understand it, methods of teaching a classroom, how to grade student worksheets and tests, and how to better control a class full of students. The hardest part of the job was controlling the volume in the classroom, however I have improved in that aspect. The most enjoyable part of the job is that the students are always very funny.

Great place to work. Great people. The managers are soo supportive and your coworkers are also very supportive. Absolutely lovely people at the school board. Just not a very exciting or vibrant workplace is all...And that's not a knock on the board, it's just the nature of the job. The managers and people really make it worth it, however. 

The work-life balance is great too. You are never expected to work overtime! and it's hybrid in office and remote.

It feels like a place you would want to end your career in. A comfortable place to work.

You can expect to work as a supply EA for 2-3 years at least before being hired as a permanent EA.  The work day is 7 hours which includes a 30 min. unpaid lunch and two 15 min paid breaks.  You report directly to the principal or their designate.  The job is fast paced.  The culture is different in every school.  The hardest part of the job is that some students are very challenging and you must have a thick skin to deal with language, melt-downs and tears.  As a supply you will work in different schools each day all with different cultures and rules.  The best part of the day is the children.  Their accomplishments will make you celebrate and their smiles will melt your heart. 
I love my Job!

I have had the privilege of working for Upper Grand District School Board as an Early Childhood Educator in the Full Day Kindergarten classroom since September 2014. This career has enabled me to learn valuable professional skills, such as classroom management (faced paced working environment), classroom safety (attention to detail and faety procedures), and adaptive teaching methods. In both my academic and professional life, I have been consistently praised as hard-working by my professors and peers.

My position was unionized position. Even though, the organization have a lack of planning from top to bottom. No proper training for employees (implement software or Operating System and get training 3 years later). It is a family organization, by means, you will find the wife and daughter and husband working in the organization with very few to almost none for minority (immigrants).

My co-workers were a lot of fun and very supportive.The students were also a lot of fun but were challenging at times in a good way. I would learn something and so would they,( a win win situation).
The best part of the job was observing a student grow and change to become more responsible with their lives and others.The hardest part of the job was to be able to keep a clear line of communication with the students and clear up any roadblocks that would make their learning environment most effective.

It helped me get my foot back into the work force again. I like working with students and showing how things are done by reading and writing with students .  The teachers are wonderful  to work with in the classroom and going on field trips. The hardest part of the job would be braking up fights  of if they were injured.
I also had students that wanted to hold my hand and walk around at recess with me. Still when I go to the school some students want to give me a hug.

I have been a supply teacher with this board over the last 12 years.  I have no complaints about this board.  I have learned to improvise when I have arrived at a school to find no plans, I have learned how to work with others to meet the needs of all the students.  This board has provided many opprotunities  to improve my teaching and general education.

My only complaint is the frustration of not being able to land full time employment, leading to a need to have additional jobs on the side.
