Worked rotating 12 hour shifts receiving patients in critical level 4 vessel and higher,double valve, heart/lung transplants or complete heart or lung failure awaiting transplant. Large number of VAD's, CRRT, IABP, etc. Learned care and treatments of immediate post surgery transplants and maintenance of rejections and failure of lung/heart transplants, There was a great degree of autonomy on this unit. In some cases other physicians weren't allowed to even be in same room as pt and RN! The management was basically hands off except for education, union compliance and ensuring sufficient staffing. This unit required very skilled RN's and job required intense concentration and often rapid interventions for pt safety and stability. The atmosphere was mainly upbeat, though it was sometimes difficult to help one another due to the complexity of our own patients. We had a full time intensivist on the unit to help with difficult situations and rapid orders.
The most difficult challenge was trying to adapt to a union controlled health care system as well as a completely physician oriented environment. After working in open heart surgical ICU and CCU in the USA, the degree to which RN's were not allowed to make comparatively simple interventions (once trained and experienced) as RN's because only technicians who had a 2 day class were allowed to do it was extremely frustrating to me! In fact, this frustration was a factor in me leaving this challenging and interesting position.
I loved the coworkers and fast pace, the respect of the surgeons and opportunity to learn new specialized equipment and skills.There was a new challenge every single day. Some shifts each patient was on multiple drips and the ventilator in addition to an  IABP or CRRT, Great fun!

I start my day at 7am, I begin with serving patients with ice water. After I would head down to dietary department and pick up the breakfast trays to deliver to patients. I serve the same units on a
daily basis,I get to know my patients. I try to help in any way to assist them with opening of packages on their meal tray. I usually get lot of "thank yous"My supervisors are very nice,they appreciate the relationship I form with my patients. The hardest part of the job is when the elevator breaks down,and the patient's meal could not be delivered on time. My co-workers were very helpful.It was always a pleasure to go to work. I learned, it just takes a smile and a nice greeting to make a patient's day.

I enjoyed my time at the University of Alberta Hospital. I was in school at the time and the hours allowed me to work after school so there were very few conflicts. It was hard to balance homework occasionally and the casual shifts made it a bit hard to plan things too much into the future. The hourly pay is great, and the hours are very manageable. It also felt great to know you brought people a little bit of happiness when they got their meal and it made even the hardest shifts more tolerable to hear genuine gratitude from the patients.

Will be put on the till first thing, taking care of credit card, debit card and money transactions. handling cash. then will be put on stocking the shelves around the store. Taking to customers on the side, helping them find their needs. Since it's a hospital gift shop, there are a lot of elery people who wanted to spend their boring time at the gift shop. so I usually spent a lot of time giving company to many customers. my shift was done with peer of 4 persons. Working along, coordinating stocking shelves, the drinks cooler.

Responsible for providing direct patient care while assisting physicians with endoscopic procedures.

Patient care during endoscopy procedures, assessment and monitoring of patients receiving moderate sedation.

Pre and post care of patients undergoing Interventional Radiology and medical imaging procedures.

Responsible for preparation and assistance with endoscopy procedures, bronchoscopy and colorectal screening within the day procedures department.

Needs to be familiar with provincial colorectal screening guidelines.

I worked within the Infectious Disease Department with a total of 11 other staff member which include: 4 Doctors,3 nurse's, and 1 Social worker.

The position was fast paced and demanding on a daily basis.  I loved working for this organization.  Working within this department, I learned many valuable skills and offered  a diverse opportunity to learn new software programs by attending seminars.etc.

Our typical day was from Monday-Thursday, when we received mails from different hospitals where the services took place.
Management was great and our manager was very helpful and so much to learn from her.
The work was good and multiple cultures
The hardest job was when you bill the patients wrongly under another physician's name
the most enjoyable part of the job was when we finished before the deadline without error.

Have fun experience for the past 3 years until recsntly that the management is gangin up on You yes Im referring to the MANAGEMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES.

of all the Workplace I worked this must be one of the Worst Management ever. THEY DO GANG UP ON YOU in order for them to TAKE OVER YOUR RIGHTS as an Employee.. If you ever come accross with this jobsi wont blame you for working but be careful of people who may stab you behind your back

Just knowing that I am a part of the medical services is an honour.  Not only do I work with great staff but most importantly i work with people who needs medical attention and it feels good when I hear happy endings those in need and sometimes it's not always a happy ending but I take pride in being a part of people's lives
