The managers I had were incredible, they were very supportive and super approachable. All of the staff I worked with were extremely hard-working and all cared a lot about the youth. The job itself could be stressful at times but having an amazing, supportive team took a lot of that pressure off.
In my experience, it hasn't always been easy to find a job with such a strong team of coworkers and management so I feel grateful to have worked here (and plan to go back once I'm back in the country!) 
The team I worked for placed a lot of importance on culture - if the staff couldn't provide it then they looked outside to bring that in for our youth. The team always put their heart and soul into their work.
I would recommend this place to anyone who is passionate about working with Indigenous youth.

Working with the staff to provide care to youth at Aboriginal Youth Safehouse was a wonderful experience for me. I love this job and find the work rewarding because it is directly enhancing the lives of the youth we serve. It is of course challenging at times to work at a safehouse, but the support from management and staff made it feel manageable. Sometimes shifts were crazy busy, other times there was down time. This is a very low barrier resource with person centred and harm reduction focus that promotes cultural safety. Would highly recommend working here!

management is unprofessional, passive aggressive communication from leadership and managers towards workers is the norm. high staff turnover rate. Leadership teams are not accountable for their own errors, and will throw subordinate workers under the bus.

The youth are lovely to work with, however, with the tension within the work culture, it makes consistent care for the service users of the programs, to have effective and consistent care.

Fired for critiquing the care of the youth in program, was blackmailed with signing an NDA to receive full severance pay.

I felt left in the lurch often during my time with UNYA. I would experience emergency situations and managers would turn off their phones while I worked alone overnight. There was no support and when I expressed how difficult it was, I was reprimanded.  

Working with UNYA was, at times, a delight. The Youth with who I worked were wonderful, as were many of my co-workers. Unfortunately, internal politics, as well as inefficiency within the organisation, contributed at times to inconsistency and negative outcomes for the youth. This is not solely the fault of UNYA - the child welfare system in its entirety - including many of the social workers with who I communicated - treat young women, particularly those with Aboriginal heritage, very poorly.

Supportive, kind, encouraging, diverse, culturally competent

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
It can vary depending on what the youth want to do!

Worked for years and was not even trained with Non-violent crisis intervention (the most basic safety training and other jobs require it and cover the cost). 

Passive aggressive staff communication. Low pay (yes the field pay is low but this organization is low even among those).

Management had a rep for not "walking the walk"- talking about the importance of mental health but not supporting staff appropriately. 

The youth work is good work. 
The management holds no accountability or professionalism. Extremely toxic top down trickle of blame and finger pointing. Poor training practices if any are in place. They make it up as it goes.
Managers are unprofessional; no confidentiality for the front line workers. 
Do not trust anyone. Do not trust anyone. 

Keeping it short and sweet. Management is awful. If they don't like you, you'll know. When they pick and choose favourites, it is blatantly obvious. The work environment is absolutely dreadful. Your self-esteem will be demolished by the time you are through with this company. Do not waste your time working here.

UNYA= Colonization: An aboriginal organization rife with +/- 80% caucasians. Most decide what is best for aboriginal youth through a myriad of shallow programming and superficial relationships.
