Urban Promise

I completed duties like watching the children ages five to
fourteen, supervising the children as they walk home and organizing sign in/sign outs for all children, assisting with clean up after the program is completed, creating different lesson plans for each day, communicating with parents, and effectively collaborating with other leaders. The goal for each day is to create a safe and positive environment for everyone. I learned how to deal with children of all ages. Difficulties to this job was working extremely hard on lesson plans and the children would sometimes not be interested, because this camp was Christian based many children would rather play than read the bible. The most enjoyable part of the job was that most of the time it was a lot of fun- playing sports and games, and very on the go keeping it interesting. We travelled to many different locations in Toronto I myself have not been to which helped widen my knowledge and culture of Toronto.

Urban Promise is a day camp and afterschool program for children ages 5-12. My typical duties would be helping the children with their homework, setting up games and activities and preparing snack and dinner for the children as well. Through this job I had learned a lot of patience and I am very thankful for the opportunities I had received from this job. I had received opportunities to go to camp in Muskoka Woods and I had also just completed a leadership program through Urban Promise. Now I help mentor youth in their leadership program. This job was very fun and lively and I have been thankful for the skills and abilities I have attained from it.

Urban Promise is a fantastic place to serve kids in a variety of ways. They provide programs for the children to have fun, learn how to read and write, develop better math skills, and many other academic skills. They have internship programs, weekly staff meetings, and every employee is there to support one another.

This job wasn't really a paying job, it was more of a volunteering experience with child care. I've learned that discipline and communication is needed. Overall, this work place was enjoyable because I got to meet new co-workers, but difficult when kids were misbehaving.

My favourite work place, its very family oriented and spiritually based. The children help you connect with you and connect with themselves. You learn a lot through out the 6 weeks. Its an amazing experience.

Working at Urban Promise helped me grow. The youth, children and staff taught life lessons that I will always use. I stepped out of my comfort zone and was able to speak to the youth and children one on one to better understand them which allowed me to bond with them.

Work consists of working and growing with kids who live in hostile environments. Learn to manage and lead a group of kids, providing routines and activities. hardest part was the stamina, but for the most it was good helping kids to grow.

As a leader for Urban which has the same ties with Inner City OutReach, we are required to keep ourselves second and the youth. The whole glory about the camp is teaching the youth and helping them grow.

It's good not always crazy busy but usually, there's never any new kids coming in throughout the year. So you develop relationships as the school year goes on by.

I learned new things from the kids every day, I got to work with lovely people. Even though the pay wasn’t that’s good I had fun because of the people who worked there
