First impressions are the most important thing, that is what they always say before going into an interview! Over the past few months, I have been working with the Co-founder of Voices.com, who has been my mentor for the Larry Myny Mentorship Program through Fanshawe College. I have had phenomenal assistance at Voices.com in guiding me over the past few months. In order to practice my interview skills, I would be participating in a mock interview at Voices.com. Leading up to the mock interview, I was assisted went through common interview questions and given ways to best respond to more difficult questions. I was provided me with tips on the importance of being yourself in an interview, being honest, smiling and most importantly, to always show confidence in yourself.

The February 13th mock interview was an excellent experience. Before going into my interview, I was asked if I would like my jacket to be hung up or if I would like anything to drink. This showed me that Voices.com truly cares about its employees and emphasizes the importance of creating comfort for individuals visiting their organization. For my mock interview, I was applying to become Voices.com's "Brand Manager." Familiar and unfamiliar questions arose throughout my mock interview, which challenged me in a way that definitely will prepare me for success in future interviews.

Voices.com offered a welcoming and open environment throughout my mock interview. My interviewers offered to answer any questions I may have throughout my interview. They made me feel confident and satisfied by creating an exciting and engaging environment. There was laughing, smiling and a sense of passion for the success of Voices.com. Challenging questions were asked, regarding ways in which I can use my skills to create a positive atmosphere with the brand towards the consumers and employees. Questions like this, are vital in finding the right individual to manage an organization. Following the interview, I was provided with feedback, which will ultimately assist me with interviews I have in the future. To best describe the success of this mock interview process, I would state that first impressions are crucial to the success of an interview. Although it is important that the interviewee has a positive first impression with the interviewers, it is also important that the interviewee has a positive first impression with the other employees of the organization. Voices.com has passionate and encouraging employees, as well as an inspiring environment that many individuals would be happy to work in.

The best years of my career were spent at Voices. 

The marketing team is a dynamic and talented group of people who are incredible to work with. The VP of marketing has so much knowledge & provides the guidance and learning that young marketers would benefit from in their careers.

I also have nothing but positive things to say about the People & Operations side - the internal team are so supportive and genuine.

Where things could improve is the workload at the manager level. Projects would stack up & meetings were constant, I felt I could never support my team enough or have enough time in the day to complete every task. This all weighed heavily when you add in some mandatory in-office time where you lose days to work on those projects. 

To excel in this company you need to work well with someone who has high expectations & have a constant queue of new ideas and projects to prioritize. This can be a positive challenge for learning and growth, but can quickly turn sour if boundaries and limitations aren’t made clear. 

Many employees have mixed reviews about the CEO. I had a positive experience working directly with him and respect him as a leader. He did sometimes overstep with his opinion on projects, but it came from a place of passion and knowledge of the voice over industry. 

The last thing I will note is that the ‘hybrid’ working policy is great, IF you live in the London area. I found it difficult to travel frequently (2-3x month) when I lived a few hours away with a young family. I was confused why in person was suddenly so important and lacked flexibility at times. 





When I first started at Voices I loved it there. As time went on I noticed a lot of unexplained dismissals, aggravated employees who had been there a while, and cliques of people who did not accept new people warmly.

I worked at Voices for over 2.5 years, and was only happy the first year to say the least. While the company pays well, there wasn't a lot of recognition for people who were making the company good money, rather the same recognition always going to the same top 3 performers.
 
  Management was constantly introducing changes, way more then an acceptable amount, sometimes the changes were for the better, and sometimes they were confusing, unexplained, and made things much harder. The joke around the office was we worked at "Changes.COM"

The culture at Voices is a positive one, but sometimes it's fake. Like the time they fired 19 employees, and expected us all just to bounce back and not feel scared in the workplace that we were next.

The best part of working there for me was the money. Commissions were really good, and helped me put a down payment on a house. 

I also liked the free lunches, as most people have commented, but does a free lunch really make a great workplace? It doesn't change the ever rising quota amounts, which get harder and harder to attain, it doesn't change the cliques of people who have been at the company since the beginning. It doesn't change living in fear at your job, or feeling like you can hardly keep up and you work from home constantly.

Working at Voices.com was something I was looking forward to - the office space was quite neat, there was no dress code and everyone was very nice. The job itself was pretty demoralizing but the culture made up for that. Business Development at Voices.com is a fancy word for cold calling - all day long. The difficulties in succeeding in a job like this are clear but management didn't give employees enough time to practise a process before it was on to the next. Too much change is never a good thing. 

Since the company has grown so quickly, management is generally just the people with the most tenure in the company - with no management experience. The average manager age is probably lower than 28 years old. 

The turnover at Voices.com was at a level higher than I thought possible. The door was constantly revolving - 15 hires a month and they could all be gone the next. I watched a lot of people who had left long-term employment to work at Voices be walked out within their first 60 days. 

Promotions were common but in weird orders and seemingly as a result of favouritism.

They seem to have no idea what they are doing financially. After a big hiring push, they let several employees go after only 3 weeks along with some employees who have been there for over a year. A total of 19 employees. Having worked for a well-known company with a good salary for over 10 years and leaving that to start what I thought was going to be a new career at voices.com only to be let go due to "restructuring" is very, very poor form for a company that claims to be one of the best places to work in London Ontario. Considering that they just leased and are moving into a bigger space downtown, you'd think they would have more foresight into the the financial future of the company and would be able to keep and pay its employees. 

Advice to Management:
Senior Management needs to have more foresight, considering that there was recently a big push for new hires at voices.com, only to come back and say that they are restructuring and need to let 1/3 of the employees go. For a company that's growing and seemingly doing well, the last thing you want is to have a reputation that you have no idea what you are doing from your current and former employees.

Since I started at Voices.com, I have been very happy to come in to work each day.  The positive office atmosphere is inviting and contagious.  

Senior management is very professional and as the company has grown, the appropriate organizational structure has been built.  I enjoy working in small teams to accomplish large tasks and campaigns.   Employee benefits and perks are great and special events provide a positive moral boost to employees.  

The downtown London office is a beautiful, bright and open space to work in featuring 360 degree views of the downtown area (which is a nice bonus!).  The company provides professional development opportunities to help employees continue to build their knowledge and skills.  Working in both the entertainment and technology industries is also very exciting.  

In closing, I would recommend Voices.com as a place of employment.  The benefits and compensation are comparable to other companies, the work environment is very positive and high performing, management has a good vision for the future and no two days are never the same!

I have been at Voices.com for about 2.5 years and I still love it as much as I hoped I would when I first applied. I knew people who worked here and I knew how good the culture was before I started. When I was hired I was thrilled and I have worked hard to make sure they always want me.

The company values a positive culture and works very hard at making sure the right people are brought in to keep it going. If you don't mind putting in a solid effort at your job (as we all should) then you will be well regarded, rewarded and you will get to enjoy the fun that comes with being successful. Management always rewards the staff for their hard work and success. From staff lunches, parties to celebrate hitting goals, to various other monthly social events to keep the warm environment that we all love.

Working at Voices.com, each day presents a new challenge. We are constantly learning and pushing ourselves to be better than the day before. Although this means a lot of change, the change is exciting and always for the benefit of the employees, our product, and our clients. 

People that work here genuinely want to help each other succeed. They are always willing to answer questions, brainstorm, or give advice when you need it. Even the leadership team and CEO keep their doors open and are excited to talk when you stop by their offices. 

The collaboration that takes place on a daily basis really drives our success. Whether you are working closely with the person you sit beside, or someone in a different team on the other side of the office, you know that you've got support. I've developed real friendships with the people I work with and am happy to call them my work family!

Working at Voices.com was an unforgettable and life changing experience both professionally and personally. 

Working alongside such talented, professional, and friendly individuals made coming into work every day enjoyable. 

Voices.com provides a wonderful work environment - allowing for continuous professional growth and a great work life balance. It’s a great place to grow and develop as a young professional and an exciting opportunity to work on notable projects with high profile clients.

Management, from both my direct manager and leadership team, was always constructive and encouraging and I could not have asked for better leadership. 

Voices.com embodies everything that separates a “good” company from a “great” one and I am proud to have been part of such an outstanding team. I highly recommend this company to others!

This is a sweet place to work because the culture and the people are fantastic. You actually make friends here and that really helps your motivation and your desire to come into work everyday. The founders place a heavy emphasis on hiring people that will enjoy the culture and add positively to it.

The work we do is really interesting and it's always new and different. I never find myself getting bored. 

The work-life balance aspect is quite strong. We can flex as much time as we need and adjust our hours where necessary. You also get 3 weeks of vacation and 3 extra days to be used as vacation or if you get sick.
