What is the best part of working at the company?

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The organization suffers from significant mismanagement, creating one of the worst work environments I have experienced. Staff members are frequently subjected to bullying by leaders whose egos take precedence over all else. Managers are often detached from their departments, exhibiting a lack of awareness, even when confronted by employees. There have been instances of covering up problematic employees. While I enjoy my role and have gained extensive insights into the organization, the toxic influence of the senior leadership team, focused on personal gain and ego, prevents this from being a positive workplace. Additionally, despite the union's strong negotiation of medical benefits, its ability to address other concerns is limited due to the vast scope of its representation. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very mixed. When I don't have to work with any management or middle managers who interfere with processes they aren't qualified for, it's fantastic. otherwise it's a hellish nightmare. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Flip a coin. It might be a PTSD day or a good day.

As an instructor, I have had a positive experience with the Project Management Department team. They have provided me with all the necessary support, guidance, and leadership to succeed in my role. I appreciate the flexibility of being able to teach 50% of my classes online, although I believe that building relationships and rapport with students is more effective teaching in-person.
Although I encountered some issues during the initial boarding process due to a lack of staff during the holidays, the rest of my experience was highly motivating. I attribute this largely to the excellent leadership of our academic head department, which has created a positive and supportive work environment.
Overall, I highly recommend working as an instructor with this department, as I have found it to be a fulfilling and rewarding experience. 

The department leadership trusts instructors to design and deliver their courses in a way that best suits their teaching style, without micromanaging. At the same time, there’s a strong support system in place, whether it’s for curriculum development, professional development opportunities, or peer collaboration. This autonomy fosters a sense of ownership and pride in my work, while knowing that I can always turn to my colleagues or department heads for guidance when needed.

The college also offers a highly competitive salary and benefits package. It’s clear that they recognize and reward the hard work of their instructors, ensuring that we are compensated fairly for our time and expertise. 

Basically things move pretty slow at VCC. They have  limited budget to do much but management isn't really motivated to do much anyway. This is a union environment and also gov't environment and so things are slow for red tape as well.
The salary is far below average but with sick days and holidays and only 35 hr work week it could be a good trade off to people. The benefits are "ok" meaning when you are told you have 100% coverage they mean you have 100% coverage from 2015ish rates.  They match pension which is a great benefit but with the low salary its a little bit hard to manage with the cost of living in Vancouver.
The management depends on the department and so I'm reluctant to comment on management.

- In my last job, I earned a reputation for being highly responsible by handling what ever duties my boss assigned me and by being flexible and doing anything that was required of me to get the job done.

- My last employer was very happy with my skills. In fact, he once said I was like the “heart and soul” of the company.

- My reliability is one of the most my characteristics and my boss and my colleagues could always count on me to complete my tasks well and on time.

- The most hardest part of the job is that I do not have any challanges.

- The most enjoyable part is when I do solve a problem and would make a satisfaction feelings in others.

As a new instructor in an architecturally based department, it has been such an AMAZING place to work.

The teaching facilities are top not along with alot of the equipment.

The governing IT policies and lack of response time to fix CRITICAL problems is uacceptable, but that is out of your control and the college has to speak to that.

The department has nothing but the best quality teachers and mentors who openly accept you and ask you if you need help - all led by a fantastic leader who gets things done when needed, or guides you to learn on your own.

A place I fully appreciate and will never leave.

Great direct boss. A lot of team building exercises which I really enjoyed. Was in the heart of down town Vancouver which was a big plus. Most enjoyable part of my job was interacting with outside companies and organizations and seeing them happy with the work that I did. It was a big company but my boss made sure we got treated well and acknowledged our hard work. A con would be that there was not room to move up in the company

I enjoyed working with the students helping them decide on careers and how to get there.  Watching and helping with their journey from applicant to graduate.  I enjoyed the interaction with my co-workers in the Counselling and Advising Department, they were awesome and the best.coworkers anyone could ask for.  There were many changes over the years and some were not for the best.

I enjoyed teaching my student who was incredibly hard working and willing to learn. I was having individual teaching sessions with the student and it was the best option as I was able to adjust my teaching style to specific needs of the learner. I was very glad to work with my supervisor, who is fabulous as a professional and a person and who was my first employee in Canada.

A positive and enjoyable learning environment with quality instructors who truly care about their students. The six week condensed course for the Provincial Instructors Diploma is challenging but a very worthwhile endeavor that enables you to continue with current employment and work towards higher goals at the same time.
