Vaughan Public Libraries

I absolutely love working for Vaughan Public Libraries. It's a safe and fun environment. Everyone is friendly and helpful, so you never feel alone or stuck on a problem. Management is also very good, so if you ever have an issue about something, it is easy to talk to them.

I have no problems with working at Vaughan Public Libraries other than the benefits and job advancement. Benefits are only given to part-time and full-time employees, while casual staff do not get anything. Wage increase would also be beneficial, especially for those who do not have benefits.

As for Job advancement, it is very difficult to move up the ladder. If you want to get a higher position, you have to answer all interview questions accurately and score a high "mark," like you are taking a test. Interviews are two parts, oral and practical. I like the practical part of the interview, the oral part is like any type of interview, but the scoring system makes it hard for anyone who wants to move up the ladder. Job positions are far and few in-between, unless there are new libraries opening.

Aside for the benefits, salary, and dismal job advancement, you are guaranteed to keep your job, which is good if you are having difficulty finding something extra to supplement your pay.

I definitely recommend VPL for anyone who wants to work in the library.

- juggling preparing programs, displays, presentations, answering phone calls, live chat, emails, and helping patrons at the desk for most of the day
- delivering youth services programs
- doing outreach in the community
- learning to use STEM equipment and technology
 - tons of turnover
 - huge workload for youth services vs adult services 
- little to no distinction between librarian and information assistants 
- no guidance or training for specific programming 
- understaffed 
- too many weekend, evenings, and 6 days a week shifts for full-time staff. 
- only place where part time people have a better schedule than full time 
- no work life balance (working 6 days a week including weekends and evenings) - librarians work from home while information staff are alone in branch all day at the desk

This library is excellent for students to start working. 

The staff are very kind. They assigns work and leave each students to figure out the most efficient way to complete the task. I learned that the supervisor cares about the end result and leaves us to work on our own pace and methods, as long as it is safe and proper to do the job. All of students enjoys the achievement during work.

Great place to work with and serve persons from other cultures Opportunities are provided to attend conferences in Ontario and the United States.
Personal development include presentation to colleagues which builds the confidence one may require to present to a wider audience.

The environment in VPL was very welcoming to every single employee as well as library customer. The management that was assigned for my line of work was very kind and accommodating to the needs of both the computer tutors and the elderly. The workplace culture was very quiet and calm, and it felt nice to be in an environment that was at peace.

Great environment and straightforward work. Easy to learn and get along with everyone. Consists of sorting library materials alphanumerically and relocating them to their assigned location. Tidyup and neatening sections is sometimes necessary.

Here I worked with children and typically taught them simple things like how to read and how to have fun. I also shelved books and worked with parents to ensure that their children's learning developed efficiently

The managers are great resource and always willing to help out when I run into an issue, but trusts me to get my work done so I have a lot of freedom in how I prioritize, which is very important to me.

The management at Vaughan Public Libraries is very minimal in volunteer positions. The library acts more as a bridge between volunteers and participants. This is not a good place to volunteer if you want structure.

The overall experience was awesome, manager were great. It was a part time 8 month contract. Timings were different each day, worked 3 orv4 days a week. Great environment and wonderful employees!
