WATERLOO REGION DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

The school board takes very little interest in what actually happens in the classrooms. The trustees never visit the schools. There is way too much variation in how principals behave, and there is simply no money being spent on learning supplies for the classroom. The people at the top making decisions have no clue what is actually happening in classrooms, and there is way too much emphasis on being politically correct at the cost of ensuring a good learning environment for all students. Why is the province not stepping in to ensure money is actually going to the classrooms regarding books for subject matter?

Be careful what you sign starting here.  The labor board states that 8 hrs of rest between shifts but that does not always happen here. You will be expected to answer all calls and go and work as requested. Regardless of the lack of 8 hrs between shifts. There is a 6mth probation that leads no where as you will still be called for all shifts even after completion of probation. You would only be hired on for a permanent part time shift if management deems you are worthy. Then you will work only part time hrs on a split shift of covering one or two possible 3 schools a evening as most shifts will only be evenings. Days shifts are nearly impossible to get as it goes by senority. Some have worked here for 5 yrs in the on call position and still did not receive a permanent position.

fun workplace, a lot of social interaction, room to advance within the company all around great place to work.  Meet all different kinds of people with different backrounds  and social status. 
Very exciting and active place to work, something going on at all times you never know what is going to happen next.  Management is very easy to work with and are very approachable.  If you have any problems they are more than willing to help you through it.  The most enjoyable part of the job is working with the kids each one is individual with very different personalities and most are willing to please you which is a great advantage.

Classroom teaching is challenging if you want it to be.  For those who wish to excell and make a difference there are opportunities to do so daily, which can be very rewarding. Some teachers strive to be their best... some do not. It is a unionized environment.
 
Due to declining enrollment, there are no opportunities coming in the next few years to be hired on a fulltime contract basis.  The WRDSB has implemented hiring practices to try to curb nepotism, which has spiraled, into what many consider to be, a completely arbitrary if not entirely random system using an LTO list.

I worked many different positions at WRDSB, they were always very busy situations working with children, youths and staff.  I was often the primary contact for parents, medical and legal maters for the students on my caseload.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Being part of education for our youth.


What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
They have not proven to have your back if you should require support.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Very isolating in the department I was in.  It was preached that it was a team environment but it really was not.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Processing multiple incident/accident reports, reviewing workplace inspection information and directing inquiries from schools and other board departments.

I have learned to be patient, to anticipate behaviors and lay positive groundwork to manage unwanted outcomes.

The hardest part of the job is when student will not engage.

The most enjoyable part of the job is when child gains confidence in his or herself and is able to value new skills learned.

Everyday was different, there were times when I was with one specific child and then there were times when I was in a classroom assisting the teacher with whatever she wanted. This could mean taking a small group or just milling around the room helping whenever I could. Principals I worked with were all terrific and my co-workers were the best, all caring wonderful teachers. Hardest part of the job was trying to prevent a child with special needs from erupting. Most enjoyable was being with the children

Challenging, ongoing interaction with the public and staff, opportunity to create own work environment, Almost everyday there is something new to learn or address.  I come to work early so that I can have switchboard and reception ready at 8:00 which is my start time.  I book rooms, answer phones, receive mail and packages and direct to appropriate person, respond to emails, admit people through locked entrance, other assigned duties.  Best part of the day is the interaction I have with staff and the public who walks in the door.

Management treats trades and custodial terribly.  Undermining and disrespectful of the workers doing the work.  Benefits and pension are good but not worth the constant scrutiny. The salary is rubbish and you are expected to work for free.  Management questions all overtime and tried to cut your hours worked.

The principals, teachers and children are amazing, very happy to see you and grateful for your expertise.  Your colleagues are great, everyone gets along well and works together.
